With qmail it is possible to set up many users without systems accounts.

I think you'd be better off installing a prior rev rather than
downgrading the kernel, just so the libraries would match up.

Just brainstorming, but it sounds like a plug and play problem. Maybe
Mandrake is resetting the PnP devices, and then Win2K is detecting them as
new devices because they are now using different resources?
Just a thought. I don't have any handy fix :(

You should have a directory like /home/ftp/pub/uploads. This is where you
are supposed to be able to upload things. If you can't do that, then look
in /etc/ftpaccess and make sure the mode on uploads is 1777 (or something
like that).

You need separate fax software and an entry in your printcap file
for it.
SO has no fax capability except to generate documents that looks like faxes.

What's the difference between installing the RPM of a new kernel
vs. compiling my own from the source? Is it just that I get to choose
what's compiled into the kernel? (ie. I can specify what NOT to compile

Win98 overides the mbr (master boot record). This is where you
probably installed lilo.
You need to find a bootdisk and when your in, just run "lilo" again.
Have a hunt around on the net, you should be able to find a bootdisk.
I don't have any links for you, try freshmeat.net

Since you're installing Mandrake 7.1, the 1024 cylinder limit is a
