OK as for the floppy mount, it says:
mount: /mnt/floppy is not a block device
return 32
What does this tell you? What is a block device?

You probably need to install the telnet-server. You DO NOT NEED to install
wu-ftpd for telnet access. I have no clue why Philip would tell you to
install wu-ftpd???
Just mount the Red Hat CD and install the telnet-server:
rpm -i telnet-server*
But keep in mind that telnet is not a good way to connect to your machine
over a network because it's unsecure. Take a look at OpenSSH
http://www.openssh.com instead.

Subject: Resetting WindowMaker to Defaults
Date: Wed, 20 Sep 2000 15:33:42 -0500
While attempting to update the setup (look &feel) for WindowMaker, an error
occurred (no details were given) and I lost my pop-up menu. The only way for
me to get out of the X shell was to turn the machine off. On logging back
with the WindowMaker shell, I was faced with a completely blank screen, no
menu items, no icons, no access to a terminal window, and no way to reboot.
Except by turning the machine off!
My Questions -
1) Since I can log into XTerm using KDE, I'd like to restore the default
WindowMaker setup. How can I do this?
2) If I need to log out of the graphical interface, and don't have access to
the 'Logout' option, if I have access to a console window, is it appropriate
to use 'xkill'? Or is there a more suitable command?
3) Anything else I could use?
Thanks in advance.

Subject: 2.4.0-test8 with Modules and SoundBlaster (simple Question)
Date: 20 Sep 2000 20:23:11 GMT
OK, this should be a simple question, but the only answer I see
doesnt work.
I have a 2.4.0-test8 kernel, compiled with modules, and a SundBlaster
Audio card.
Acording to the /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/README.modules
file I added the line
alias char-major-14 sb
to the /etc/modules.conf file.
When I just 'start' a sound application (xmcd) I get NOTHING.
No sound.
However if I then do a
/sbin/modprobe sb
from the /lib/modules/2.4.0-test8/kernel/drivers/sound directory
(Im not sure if being there is important or not), then the modules are
loaded and everything works properly.
So the QUESTION...
Since the above line doesnt work, wWhat should I REALLY put in
/etc/modules.conf to get this to work automagically?????

PS I posted this earlier on the Mandrake newsgroup, and didn't get any
advice that worked for me. I've tried lilo -u, but that didn't work.
==== ORIGINAL MSG =====
Any help will be greatly appreciated here.
I installed Linux on a SMP system with a prior installation of Win NT. W/o
realizing it, I installed LILO on the MBR instead of the root partition. Now
I can't get Win NT back!!! I don't have an NT rescue disk, and I can't seem
to be able to uninstall LILO. I even tried doing an upgrade re-install of
WinNT. Is there any way I can get WinNT to run again without destroying
everything I have on my NT partitions? I'd be losing almost 2 years of work
here.
Also, because it's an SMP system, I'm unable to start up Win 95/98 and use
BOOTPART to restore my boot sector, since COMMAND.COM does not seem to like
running under a dual processor system.
I tried editing /etc/lilo.conf (results listing below). The boot process
hangs when I select 'nt' as the boot option.
I have the following boot sector files in my /boot directory. There's only
one candidate for a backed up boot sector file from Win NT. I believe it's
the one which was used when I executed lilo -u. Is it possible it was not
used, since lilo is still booting my system?

If all else fails, open the case, pull a card out, and look at the main
chipset on the card. Then research thepart number on the chip.
Usually, any brand/model of NIC which uses the same chipset would use
the same "driver" and you could, when installing/configuring the card,
specify one of these other more popular cards which use the same chip.
Good Luck,

I just had a problem with my laptop. Make sure the PCMCIA service is
starting before the Network service. If PCMCIA starts after Network,
you will get a error 'Delaying eth0 initialization', or something like
that. I used DHCP and reserved an IP for Linuxbox let the DHCP server
do its magic. badda boom

to see which device files are linked by /dev/cdrom /dev/floppy etc....
ls -l /dev
To list the partitions on a drive use "fdisk -l" e.g. type:
fdisk -l /dev/hdb
to list the partitions on the primary ide controller, slave drive.
floppy drive device file names:
fd0 = first floppy (DOS A:)
fd1 = second floppy (DOS B:)
ide device file names are standardized in linux and assigned as follows:
hda = ide0 - drive0 (primary ide controller, master drive)
hdb = ide0 - drive1 (primary ide controller, slave drive)
hdc = ide1 - drive0 (secondary ide controller, master drive)
hdd = ide1 - drive1 (secondary ide controller, slave drive)
partition numbers are appended to the raw device name, e.g.:
hda1 = first partition on primary ide controller, master drive
hdc4 = fourth partition on secondary ide controller, master drive

I don't know about Supermount, but the mount/unmount commands use the
settings in the /etc/fstab (File Systems TABle) file, these can be
viewed/changed in linuxconf, go to the "filesystems-local drives" section
and click on the list to see properties for a particular entry, or the
/etc/fstab file can be editied by hand, for info on what to put in there
type "man fstab".
> c) Is the mount command for floppy the exact same as for CDROM?
> Obvious with a different /dev/???...
The un/mount commands use the settings in /etc/fstab so the mount commands
can look the similar, in fact if fstab is good you need only type the mount
point OR device file name not both e.g. "mount /mnt/cdrom" will work since
the mount command will look up the rest of the info (dev file, filesystem
etc.) in fstab. Un/mount command line settings will override those in fstab
e.g. if you type "mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/dosflop" mount will use the
msdos filesystem and mount the first floppy (A: in DOS) onto the
/mnt/dosflop dir regardless of the settings in /etc/fstab.
> d) I am a little confused by these kernel modules? Could someone
> give me the low down on how they interact with the kernel?
I don't know the low levels (yet), but modules are pieces of the kernel
executuable (binary) which have been separated from it (compiled separately)
so they can be loaded/unloaded into active memory on demand.
This is done using the insmod (install module) and rmmod (remove module)
commands.
Other module utilities include: modprobe, depmod, lsmod, check the man pages
of these commands.
Most modules are hardware device drivers (e.g. mouse, NIC, sound)
and can be added to enable new hardware without recompiling the kernel.

Most systems put a symbolic link called cdrom into the /dev dir for ease of
use. If the /dev/cdrom link is not there you can create it with the ln
(link) command
(as root) type:
_ make a symbolic link
/ _ existing file to link to
/ / _ link name
/ / /
ln -s /dev/hdX /dev/cdrom
where hdX is the raw ide device file of your cdrom e.g. hdc for a cdrom on
the secondary ide controller, master drive.
hope this helps!

Subject: Boot hangs at "Loading Kernel"
Date: Wed, 20 Sep 2000 16:10:18 -0700
Help!
I just recompiled the kernel on my OpenLinux eDesktop 2.4 system from 2.2.14
to 2.2.17 using bzImage. Since this is something I don't do often, I
followed the directions in "Running Linux".
Everything went smoothly until I went to boot into the new kernel image. The
first thing I noticed was that where I previously had three operating
systems (OpenLinux eDesktop, OpenLinux eServer, and Windows) listed as
choices on Caldera's startup screen, I had to press <Tab> to list my
options. When I selected the new "Linux" option, the display hung partway
through "Loading Kernel". Several periods were displayed after the loading
message, and then nothing else happened. The hard drive light was on for a
while, but then even that stopped.
Using my boot disk got me back to the system the way it was when I first
installed it, with none of the changes that I had made since. Mounting the
Desktop partition onto eServer got me the same thing.
I have several questions.
1) Why did lilo's display change when all I did was point it to a new kernel
image?
2) Why is the boot hanging, and how do I fix it?
3) How can I get my files back (I never deleted or overwrote anything)
without re-installing and restoring from back-up?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
