Move ~/GNUstep/ somewhere else. You might want to restore things from
there even if files are corrupted, as most of them will be ok.

Call 'wmaker.inst' before running wmaker again to create a new
~/GNUstep/ hierarchy.

You could save your current ~/GNUstep/ ('cp -r' or 'tar') if you
have configured it again. If you ever loose it again, then put back
a copy of the backup while windowmaker is _not_ running (it won't
accept/recognize files modified (by others) in f.i. Defaults/
while running).

kill wmaker itself or the process which started it
(usually this process is your 'session') e.g. a shell running
~/.xinitrc or ~/.xsession or startx, etc

Killing the Xserver is the last resort.
Rebooting the last after that one... :)

I do this now with redhat6.2 and win98, and had to figure this out myself,
since the old HOWTO did me no good either.
in MSWin:
* on the desktop - right click on the "mycomputer" icon and select
"properties"
* in the "System properties" dialog - select the "Performance" tab
* in the "System properties"="Performance" dialog - select "Virtual Memory"
* in the "Virtual Memory" dialog -
       - select the "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings" radio
button
       - set the "hard drive" to the disk of choice (C: on my system)
       - set the "minimum" and "maximum" to the same size (mine is 64MB)
(this is to set the size, and prevent dynamic swapfile
allocation)
       - click "OK"
       - ignore messags warning about not letting win control the swap file

in linux:
My setup has the windows C: partition mounted on /win, and MS makes a swap
file named win386.swp in the root dir of its partition, so in MY linux
system it is /win/win386.swp. To init and activate the swap file, in a root
shell I type:

/sbin/mkswap /win/win386.swp
/sbin/swapon /win/win386.swp

once I tested this and all was joyfull I then added these commands to the
/etc/rc.d/rc.local file so they would run every time linux boots.

That's it! Works like a charm for me, BTW MSWin re-init's the swap file
every time it boots so no problems there, though you need to do the same in
linux, hence the mkswap command. If I have to turn off this swap file in
linux (to unmount /win for instance) I type: /sbin/swapoff
/win/win386.swp

post a reply if you have problems with this!

Subject: Re: X help!

I just posted myself and was wondering if there was any advice I
could possibly give, so take this with a grain of salt. I have
had X problems with RedHat 6.0-6.1 myself, often caused by xfs,
the X Font Server. I thought it was something oddball with that
level of RedHat because my problems went away with RedHat 6.2.

On the other hand, there are some things to try if this is the
right direction. I've seen xfs not start if certain filesystems
are full. You can check this with:

        df -h

Look for filesystems at or near 100% usage. Then again, maybe
all you need to do is run/re-run Xconfigurator as root. It is
important that you know the details regarding your graphics
adapter like Make, Model, RAM. It is also important to have
installed the appropriate xserver for your adapter. The rpm
package on your Redhat CD, XFree86-SVGA, is usually a good
choice for starters if you have an SVGA adapter, which is likely
the case unless you bought your adapter from a museum (ie damn
my graphics card is old). In which case, the package XFree86-VGA-16
would be the xserver to install before running Xconfigurator.

If you don't have /usr/bin/X11/Xconfigurator on your machine then
you should run /usr/bin/X11/xf86config instead. Now, please re-read
that "grain of salt" bit at the top again.

Success,

Note also that most of the time, it's far more important that all your

My (working) very minimal masqerade setup is started
by running these commands:
=========== snip =============
# first flush existing rules from the foreward chain
ipchains -F foreward

# start with a default policy of DENY
ipchains -P foreward DENY

# acivate forewarding with policy of MASQ for class c subnet
ipchains -A foreward -s 192.168.0.0/24 -j MASQ

# install ftp forewarding module
insmod ip_masq_ftp
=========== snip =============

once it was working I put these commands into the
/etc.rc.d/rc.local script file so they will be run every time I boot

this works for me!

> On my laptop, I have set the IP address to 192.168.0.3, the gateway to

not quite... win98 settings on the laptop are:
- IP addr is the local network address of the laptop
    (192.168.0.3 looks good)

- hostname is your network name for the laptop
    (add to /etc/hosts on server)

- gateway should be the local network IP addr of box that's on
  the internet (192.168.0.1 looks good)

- dns server(s) should be the IP addr of your ISP's dns boxes
(unless you'r running your own dns on your network)
(look in /etc/resolv.conf on the server and use those numbers).

- domain should *not* be set to your ISP's domain, leave it blank

hope this helps!

Heelo ALL

My server will be placed in the Amsterdam Intenet Exchange, on a 34 Mbit
line...
I want to start 4 servers from it,
 1 FFA, 1 Freeze Tag, 1 TeamDM and a 1on 1 server.
 I use a K6-3 450 with 256 mb RAM

Question :

The servers should start automatically,,,
I tried all sort of things, can anyone tell me how to do this,

I use RH6.2, have scripts that are made in pico, like :

cd /usr/local/games/quake3
./q3ded +set dedicated 2 +exec ffa_server.cfg +set net_port 27960
+cvar_restart

I called this file ffa_server, which is chmod-ded a+x
I can start this from commandline by ./ffa_server, and it works..

BUT, it should start automatically, and it doesn't..
And it should start 4 servers auto,
how do i do this ?

Tried using screen, doesnt work, tried making symlinks from ffa_server to
S99ffa,
then it also works, but the second doesnt start...

Anyone ?

I realize you want your old MBR back, but you really can use LILO instead
and have it boot either NT or Linux. That's how I do it, and I like it
better. I think the problem may just be in the "table = /dev/sda1" line in
your lilo.conf. I think it should be "table = /dev/sda". That is, it needs
to be told to find the partition table for NT at the start of your drive,
not at the start of the NT partition. Try that (careful, of course, as
always with lilo), re-run the lilo installer, and see if you can boot into NT.

Hi,

I've installed SuSE6.2 on my pc and I'd like to

Also the sound does not seem to be working. I have

I'd appreciate any help with these problems.

Hi,

I installed MySQL under SuSE6.2 but I'm not able to
connect to the localhost server from the KDE client.
It's a standalone pc with no network connections
setup. After doing 'Add Server' and selecting either the
localhost or the machine name as the server from Kmysql
client I get "Can't connect to MySQL ... (111)" error.

What kind of configuration would be necessary
to work with MySQL? I just need to work with some simple
SQL commands.

Use virtusertable. The last entry in the file should be
"@domain.com<tab>localuserid" where localuserid is the name of the local
user who should receive default mail for domain.com.

I use this to catch all the misspelled names and forward them to the
correct location.

I have the german version of SuSE installed (6.3 but should not differ much)
maybe it's not all the same.

You can list Your /usr/bin directory and see if there are programs like
"mysqld", "mysql" ...
just do
ls /usr/sbin/mysql*
and
ls /usr/bin/mysql*
and see what you have.
think you should at least have "mysqld"
If You don't find such files you have to install the packages.

You can also use yast to verify Your installation
start yast.
choose "Installation ***/start"
then "configuration change/***"
in section "pay" you should install the packages
"mysql" and "mysqlclnt"

if you run the command "mysql" You should get a message like this:
# mysql
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 2 to server version: 3.22.30

Type 'help' for help.

... hope this helps.

what type of soundcard do You have - pci or isa ?
do You use the standard Kernel from SuSE or did You
compile an own ?
Do You have any messages about Your soundsystem in Your bootmessages ?
cat /var/log/boot.msg
is there something like:
  <7>Sound initialization started
  <6>Found OPL3-SAx (YMF719)
  <4><MS Sound System (CS4231)> at 0x534 irq 5 dma 0,1
  <4><MPU-401 0.0 Midi interface #1> at 0x330 irq 5 dma 0
  <7>Sound initialization complete
(these are messages for a different card of course)

for standard with no soundmessages at boottime You can try to modify the
/etc/modules.conf
for Your needs but as I'm not sure You should make a bakup of this file
first :-)

Yes , here is what you need to do to make this puppy work , in the
options line remove the "io=0x300" and just leave the irq=10 , it should
work great , that is what I had to finally do with that vintage of
redhat before I went to mandrake , which was a real no brainer ....
Also no need to reboot , just run "ifup eth0" and it should run
hopefully , YMMV of course ;^)

Thanks for the suggestion. It turns out that the boot floppy from RedHat
