IIRC, in vmware windoze would not be using that swap
area but instead an imaginary "virtual" swap area
that lives within the vmware windows file, right?

Subject: SCSI timeouts during boot - command to ignore?
Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 20:57:44 GMT
I am running RedHat 6.2 with an Adaptec 2940U2W. I recently added a third
harddrive on the SCSI chain and begin getting SCSI timeouts. I replaced the
cables and terminator with Granite Digital and haven't had a SCSI timeout
for 5 days, except with Linux! During the boot, it attempts to get to drive
8 (the new drive and gets a a timeout and goes into an infinite loop waiting
for that drive. These are the same symptoms that I got before replacing the
cables. The same machine has Win3.1 w/PC DOS 7 + Win98 + OS/2 + NT 4.0 +
Win2000 and all of those are running fine (no logged timouts for 5 days,
since I replaced the cables). Linux has no partitions on the third drive
(single NTFS primary partition). If I physically remove that third drive,
Linux boots fine.
The SCSI chain has:
ID 0 - boot disk - 9GB
1 - 18GB
3 - DVD-RAM
4 - CD/ROM
5 - CD R/W
6 - DAT tape
7 - Adaptec self address
8 - 36 GB drive
I would like to set Linux to ignore this drive completely - is there any way
to do this at the boot prompt? Obviously it is a trifle difficult to make
changes to this system as the only way to boot it is to power down, open the
case, pull the SCSI cable, power up and boot and use it. Or might it be
something else wrong?

Hi,
I am new. (Bet you never guessed!)
Anyway, I successfully installed RedHat 6.2 a week or two ago. But, I am
quite new to Linux, and I am not sure how to detect my modem and my sound
card.
Yes, I read the HOWTO. But I must confess, it was significantly less than
helpful. I couldn't make head nor tails of the modem HOWTO, and all I got
out of the sound-card one was "Recompile the kernel."
I have a Toshiba Tecra 550CDT Laptop that I am running Linux on (and also
Win98).According to my specs and the HOWTO'S my modem and sound card are
supported, so I should be able to do it, it's just a matter of how.
Any hints?

Subject: Inspiron 5000e goes blank on boot
Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 20:47:05 GMT
Hi,
I installed Mandrake 7.2beta on my new Dell Inspiron 5000e, and the
installation went ... ok (a couple of missing packages but that's it).
I did make a boot disk from the installation process (which is quite
nice BTW). Everything (except XWindows -- which I haven't gotten around
to configuring yet) works fine.
Now, I upgraded my kernel to 2.4.0-test8, but ever since I replaced
kernel (in /boot/vmlinuz) with the one that came out of the build, I'm
unable to boot.
I specify vga=2 as a boot parameter, and the booting process starts --
then the screen goes blank. I don't think anything happens after that.
I tried 3 different kernels (2.2.16, 2.2.17, 2.4.0-test8) -- all with
the same result.
Any help on how to solve the 'blanking' screen would be greatly
appreciated.
Here are my specs:
- Dell Inspiron 5000e
- ATI Mobility 128 16MB AGP2 graphics card
- 30GB HD
- 1400x1050 display
- 3COM pcmcia card
Thanks!

Make sure you have a bootable linux floppy. After you install
Windows, boot linux from the floppy and re-run lilo to write lilo
back into the boot sector. If you've added or deleted partitions
or want to boot the Windows partition from lilo, edit your
/etc/lilo.conf appropriately before you run lilo.

NT says that all the time to me when im at school. NT sucks at
networking, OR the sysadmin doesn't knwo what to do. I hooked my laptop
up to the school's network and i opened up network neighborhood and what
do i see? Only one domain, the one I use at home. None of the school's
domains showed up. I waited a few minutes and checked again. Now a few
domains did show up but not all. Waited a few more, same thing. Waited
again and some more showed up but others disappeared. What hell kind of
network is this? I click on a computer to acces, the one right next to
me and NT says the share isn't available. IT SHOULD BE, there is nothing
wrong. I wait and try again, now it works for some reason.
basically NT can't handle networking I think. I cant help u fix it as I
didnt even do anything at school but wait and hope nt would finally tell
me i could do what i wanted.

the modem already dials, meaning the kernel knows it exists and can use
it. However the problem is getting a connection..
To the original poster, check /var/log/messages and tell us what the
actual error message is so we can help you. We cant just take a wild

Hi,
6.2 server actually needs 1.7 gig!
Go back to dos , use partition magic or equivallent , delete the e
partition.
Then Install Rh6.2 , this time select only packages you need (It as to be a
workstation). You can allways go back , during the installation to drop
packages you don't need .

Disable the Reverse Name resolution would be a better choice.
You may telnet from different locations.
But if you just telnet from one place, just put the follow that instruction.

Congrats, I can see that you have been reading the FAQ and the
upload.instructions.HOWTO. Now you just have to start doing as they
recommend rather than trying to use a "roll your own" method.
Ok, first you have a number of typos in your file.
( upretrieve ? nodors ? )
How are you launching ftpd? ( Please show the entire command line )
I strongly recommend using tcp_wrappers with inetd
# /etc/inetd.conf
ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftpd -I -l -a -w
# after in.ftpd the -I (capital "eye") = don't use identd lookup
# -l (lowercase " el " ) log to syslog
# -a use ftpaccess for configuration info
# -w log ftp logins to wtmp with shell login logs
I don't believe you understand the use for anon-ftp. It is NOT
intended for web server maintenance (horrible, insecure idea). If you
are uploading files that are updating your webserver DO NOT use
anon-ftp, use a REAL account. Anon-ftp is designed to provide unknown
or remote users with temporary disk space to store files (i.e. save
email strain by uploading or downloading a CAD file) Anon-ftp should
NEVER be used for actual server maintenance. Do you understand that
anon-ftp is a BAD BAD BAD idea yet?
You seem to want to force your own non-working setup rather than use
the examples given to you in the FAQ. I have included the section but
I replaced " root " & " daemon " with the more secure " ftpadmin " as
mentioned in the "upload.configuration.HOWTO".
<<snipped right from the FAQ>>
WU-FTPD FAQ
Section 11 - Item 8
=>I want anonymous users to be able to upload files, but in the most
secure manner possible
=> In general: you don't want this. But, if you're stubborn...
(( Get the point? Even the folks who write the software say it's a bad
idea.))
Read the upload.configuration.HOWTO, pointer at the beginning of this
faq.
They mention the HOWTO but you have to go back to the home page to see
the link.
http://www.wu-ftpd.org/HOWTO/upload.configuration.HOWTO
Follow the steps carefully. DO NOT make your own shortcuts. If you
are going to tinker, do it after you know it is working (and have
saved your config).
Finally, here are some additional security lines you really should add
to your ftpaccess file. Some of the paths may not match your system,
so adjust as needed. Most of the items can actually be put on one
line, I have them broken up for readability and to fit whatever mail
reader format you have.
# /etc/ftpaccess
# restrict file upload naming
# I didnt want the line to wrap
# replace real with real,anonymous,guest
path-filter real /etc/paths.msg ^[-A-Za-z0-9\._]*$ ^\. ^-
### Restrict download access
#Users have no reason to download system files
noretrieve /bin /boot /dev /etc /lib /mnt
noretrieve /opt /proc /root /sbin /tmp /usr /var
noretrieve lost+found
#Anti-crack protection - don't give away your passwd files
noretrieve passwd shadow passwd- shadow- .htaccess core *.core .notar
#Don't give away security to protected web directories
#SSH isn't any good if you give away your encrypted keys
noretrieve /home/*/.htaccess /home/*/.ssh
noretrieve authorized_keys identity identity.pub
noretrieve known_hosts random_seed
#Users can upload but not download
noretrieve /home/ftp/incoming
#Increase logging to track users
log transfers guest,real,anonymous inbound,outbound
log security guest,real,anonymous
log syslog+xferlog
#block specific user access - list here or /etc/ftpusers
defaultserver deny root ftpadmin
# Restrict all users to their home directories
restricted-uid *
restricted-gid *
#unrestricted-gid %600
### Deny access to addresses w/o nameservers or incorrect dns entries
dns refuse_mismatch /etc/msgs/ftp.dns-error
dns refuse_no_reverse /etc/msges/ftp.dns-error
# end /etc/ftpaccess
OK. this should get you up and running with the information from
http://www.wu-ftpd.org/HOWTO/upload.configuration.HOWTO

I have a mount puzzle.
On my Mandrake 7.0 system I have
a Panasonic PD drive on /dev/sr0 that can read CDs. I also have
an HP CD-Writer on /dev/sr1 that can successfully write CDs. It can
also read tar files that have been written to CD on it.
My fstab file contains the following:-
/dev/sr0 /mnt/pdcd iso9660 noauto,user,ro,unhide,exec,dev,suid 0 0
/dev/sr1 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,user,ro,unhide,exec,dev,suid 0 0
I can happily mount and unmount the PD drive and read CDs whether I am me or root.
However, neither I nor root can mount the CD-writer for reading a CD.
This is irritating because it is *much* faster than the PD drive.
If I try:-
mount /dev/sr1
I get
mount: only root can do that
-- even though I have "user" set
If root tries the same it gets
mount: fs type iso9660 not supported by kernel
-- which cannot be true
Root also gets the same message after issuing
mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr1 /mnt/cdrom
I'm presumably doing something stupid. Can anyone please tell me what?
- Richard.

Dan's post on Tuesday mentioned the installer was sensitive about SCSI
disconnect. So, I went looking for a HOWTO about presenting a needed
boot parameter to prevent SCSI disconnect. The web was littered with
identical HOWTO's indicating that for my 53C875 HBA that the
presentation of boot parameters was unsupported. Eventually I found one
that differed - it had exactly what I thought I needed in the URL in my
earlier post above, which got rid of the miscellaneous error messages,
leaving the biggie remaining - the 7.1 installer still couldn't find the
base package.
In checking the install log I found a number of SCSI errors. I had no
clue as to the significance of their meaning, except for the several
pointing to read errors at specific sectors on the CD. I tried rebooting
into OS/2 Warp to copy from the CD. I got no errors from copying the
whole CD to a FAT32 partition. From this my only conclusion was an
incompatibility between something on the SCSI bus and the 53c875 support
the installer was using.
The easiest thing to try turned out to be changing the CD drive. It
worked. Replacing my trusty old Sony CDU55S 2.4X, which *never* gave me
any trouble previously, under not less than 5 other operating systems
and four different HBAs, with an often troublesome Sanyo CRD-254S 4X
drive got 7.1 installed! Other than this inexplicable CD hardware
compatibility problem, the Mandrake 7.1 installer is the friendliest OS
installer I've used so far.
Dan's post may not have been the ultimate answer, but it somehow got me
onto the track to success!

A thread in aolm pointed me to the SCSI system. The fix came in the form
of replacing my Sony CDU55S 2.4X, which *never* gave me any trouble
previously, under not less than 5 other operating systems and four
different HBAs, with an often troublesome Sanyo CRD-254S 4X drive. Go
figure!
