Hi there folks.
I am having a problem getting a linux printer to work from my Win2K
box.
I have samba setup and running OK (I can see the shares from the
windows box by using run //server ).
The printer works fine from the linux box itself, but when I try and
print a test page to it from the 2K box, it just comes up with an
error saying "Test page failed to print. Would you like to view the
print trouble shooter for assistance? Unable to create a print job".
The printcap file look like
##PRINTTOOL3## LOCAL laserjet 300x300 a4 {} LaserJet Default 1
lp:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:\
:lp=/dev/lp0:\
:if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:
and the smb.conf looks like
[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/spool/samba
print ok = Yes
browseable = No
[lp]
#path = /var/spool/samba
path = /var/spool/lpd/lp
read only = No
hosts allow = 192.168.
hosts deny = ALL
print ok = Yes
printer name = lp
oplocks = No
share modes = No
print command = lpr -r -h -P %p %s
the other odd thing is that if I do a /usr/sbin/lpc status I get the
following
lp:
queuing is enabled
printing is enabled
no entries
no daemon present
Not sure what the bit about no deamon being present means or if its a
problem because, as I said, printing under Linux is no problem.
Any ideas?? Its a RH6.2 system BTW and I had all this working once
(just killed the system and had to rebuild it :( ).
Thanks.

In my experience, auto doesn't work well with HFS devices. I've not
tested it with the very latest kernels (2.2.18 or 2.4.1), though; it
could well have been fixed. As a workaround, try creating two entries:
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/macflop hfs noauto,owner 0 0
This has the advantage that you can add parameters for the HFS floppy to
get it to do useful but HFS-specific things, like fork=netatalk to get
Netatalk-style handling of resource forks.
> also will hfs work on mac formatted scsi drives?
Yes, if the drives use HFS, not HFS+. AFAIK, there are as yet no HFS+
drivers for Linux. Also, you'll need Mac partition table handling in
your kernel, or the drive must have just one HFS partition. (The HFS
drivers include rudimentary HFS partition handling, but it's not
flexible enough to deal with multiple partitions. It's useful for Zip
disks and the like, though.)

Please post us your /etc/lilo.conf
BTW You should really have Linux as Secondary Master, and have the CDROM
as slave. Though since lilo will have to go into the MBR that really
doesn't matter.
I don't think the lilo that comes with Slack7.1 is recent
enough to handle the >1024 cylinder issue.

1. Attach clone system disks (/dev/hdc, /dev/hdd).
2. Clone entire system disk using dd(1):
# /usr/bin/time dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdc bs=1k &; \
/usr/bin/time dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdd bs=1k
3. Clone MBR:
# dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdc bs=446 count=1
# dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdd bs=446 count=1
4. Change the IP address (if static addresses), change hostname.
5. Test by swapping one of the cloned disks and rebooting.
Notes:
1. Assumes lilo in MBR, EIDE system with system disk on ide0, clone
disks on ide1.
2. If you have a Promise or other add on controller, you could use that
to increase the number of cloned disks per cycle.
3. If the clone workstations are not 100% identical (eg: hardware
including monitor), you'll have to manually make respective changes on
each of the clone disks.
4. The password files will be identical.
5. Note that dd makes low level byte by byte copies. If the system
disks are very big (eg- > 10GB) or have much unused space this could
take longer than it's worth.
6. Smart way would be to time and test w 1 clone, then make a script
that pauses after each clone set. Remember to include shutdown, disk
change and reboot time.

Ay ey ay!
Firstly, Some distros (ideally all) will still require a root password in
single user mode (Slackware for one does this). Anything else would be
daft, expecially in a workstation environment (Yeh! Instant Access). You
can put a password on lilo however.
Use a seperate boot disk to boot the computer.
Mount the root partition, under say, /mnt
You should have /mnt/etc now available. Edit the *shadow* file so you
have something like
root::11357:0:::::
This will allow you to log in without entering a password. Do not edit
/etc/passwd, since removing the x means that when you type passwd, the
password will be placed in the passwd file, and not in the shadow file,
which is bad.
Now unmount and reboot, and be sure to enter a new passwd for root.

Have you read the section in the MySQL manual regarding permissions?
Have you executed a statement like
grant all privileges on *.* to dba@'%' identified by 'password';
(Syntax may not be correct, look in the manual)

Doesnt this make a mockery of linux security and its password protected accounts if
anyone can just log on in single user mode and change the root password?

It sounds as if there is a problem with incorrect settings of the IO
address or IRQ settings for the serial communications port the modem
is connected to. Check the settings quoted by Win 95 control panel
agree with those displayed at boot time by SuSE6.3 for /dev/ttyS0
(Com1) and /dev/ttyS1 (Com2). You may also need to check the computer
Bios listing or mother board settings.
I had the similar problem with my internal MT modem under SuSE 6.2
until I corrected the IRQ setting, after which Yast found the modem
and setup wvdial. Kppp worked with my internal modem after sorting out
the IRQ problem.

Subject: Help with Linux on an Eurocom notebook!
Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 20:54:23 -0500
Hi,
I'm wondering if someone could give me pointers that would
help me setup Linux on an Eurocom 5100S notebook.
Curiously enough, I could setup (though with limitations,
see below) RedHat 6.2, but could not setup RedHat 7 (with
RH7, the setup program runs to the end, I get the message
"congratulations, installation completed", then, when I
reboot, it boots my Windows as though I had never even
attempted to install Linux -- no LILO prompt, no boot
loader: it boots directly to Win 2K)
So, I could install RH6.2, but the problem is that it
doesn't seem to recognize neither my video card, nor the
network card (that model has a built-in network card).
Win2K reports the video card as a SiS 630, which is in
the list of cards in the RH installation program -- but
any attempt to run Xconfigurator is either futile (like
resistance with the Borg :-)), or leads to a complete
freeze of the machine (to the point that I have to press
the power button to turn it off!!)
Any help? Pointers, info, etc.!
Thanks!!
Carlos

I don't have Win95 installed on my machine -- just Linux -- so no W95
controls! I've had a look at the BIOS on start up but I'm a bit
clueless. I don't understand why it dials up with Minicom but not with
Kppp.

This sounds like it could be my problem. What is the IRQ setting? And
where is it in the BIOS? And what do I do with it when I find it?
Perhaps its my lights that are flashing but I'm not in! ;-)

OK, I did
rpm -qa | grep make
on my RH6.2 machine and I got:
make-3.78.1-4
pmake-2.1.34-3
automake-1.4-6
So you may be missing an RPM somewhere.
(I'm not sure what package my gcc is in, but rpm -qa | grep gcc produces nothing).

If I understand you correctly, you can boot from you Linux floppy?
If so, then login as 'root' and change directory to /etc.
Set up lilo.conf there (you need to read the LILO documentation)
if it is not already set up.
Then enter 'lilo' at the command prompt and reboot.

THis appears to be one problem. Aren't these user names? Their supposed
to be machine names. Unless your NetBIOS name for your PC is either
'administrator' or 'akeller' you won't get access to the share.
Why don't you leave this option blank?

You'll need a text mode file manager if you're running in telnet,
or just use the command line.
You could try 'mc' (Midnight Commander).
