I ran into the exact same situation last week. Sorry that I cannot
offer any solution. I came to the newsgroup hoping for one and found
that you already described my exact problem. I was installing 2nd
edition on bare drive and could not get NIC to work--mine is also the
3com 509. Modconf behaves the same way as you describe and my download
size matches yours exactly. Misery loves company..... Think I'll try
Caldera.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Greetings. I've just installed RedHat 6.2 and am having trouble getting
my Logitech Trackman Marble to play nicely with my modem. Here's the
hardware setup to start:
AMD K6/2 500, Epox EP-MVP3C2 mainboard, 128MB ram, USR 56k faxmodem
jumpered to COM2 (irq 3), LogiTech Trackman Marble PS/2, Xi Graphics
Accelerated-X server, /dev/mouse->/dev/psaux
And, here are the symptoms. Until I attempt to access the modem the
mouse works fine (although I've noticed that manipulating the wheel
within an xterm activates the bash history mechanism). However, modem
access is unsuccessful; I get "can't initialize modem" and (I think I've
seen) "modem busy" messages. If I disconnect my ps/2 mouse and attach a
LogiTech serial mouse, all is well.
I'm a long-time Linux user and pretty good with hardware (I built this
machine from scratch), so I think I've set things up correctly. However,
I've been wrong (many times) before.
I've spent a fair amount of time searching the various Linux sites but
have found nothing precisely indicative of my trouble. I'd sure
appreciate any help/advice. Thanks much.

The version of WU-FTPD that is on the RH6.2 CD has a known
buffer overflow exploit that will allow remote user to gain root access.
There are also exploits for rpc.statd (NFS/portmap) and BIND (name server)
that allow remote users to gain root access without local accounts on
your host.
See http://www.cert.org/incident_notes/IN-2000-10.html for
general info.
See http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/rh62-errata-security.html
for RedHat security updates and patches.

After you reinstall your OS from scratch, make sure you have
any and all updates/patches for any/all services you are running.
This will protect you from most h4ck3rz. Why? h4ck3rz read
the secuirty advisories too and then download someones source
code that exploits a service and then scan subnet after subnet
looking for computer running that service. Those who fall behind on
the security patches are more likely to get r00ted as time passes.
As others have suggested, stop using generic telnet and use
secure shell or a version on telnet that uses encryption. Telnet
sends login and password information in clear-text over TCP.
This is a bad feature.
Other than that, read up on security stuff then keep reading
more.

First, get it off the network. Then wipe and re-install after making
backup copies of the unwanted stuff. Since this is a felony here, this
is evidence. Take note of any addresses found in any of the logs that
he may have missed and report them both to the originating class C admin
and save it for any law enforcement you bring in.
If it was a RH6.2 install, after re-installing it, goto
ftp.redhat.com/pub/support/6.2/errrata, grab the whole directory,
sticking it in a seperate directory and do an 'rpm -Uvh *.rpm' while
cd'd to that directory. Restart syslogd, network, and inetd with
linuxconf, services menu.
Make sure you have tcpwrappers installed, and get portsentry from
www.psyonic.com and install it. Then you can feel a bit more
comfortable when the hackers are walking about.
A good ipchains setup is probably even better, but this has stopped them
on my office machine about 15 times so far.
Cheers, Gene

Subject: How to adjust kde display
Date: Fri, 22 Sep 2000 03:04:14 GMT
My kde display is a little off-center. Needs adjustment. I have a
Viewsonics PT770 and Matrox Millenium 4Mb card with 2064W chipset. On
my monitor, I can push a panel button and get an on-screen display of
various adjustments to the monitor. It also says the Horizontal freq.
43.88Khz, vertical freq. 89Hz and says "Non-registered". I looked up
the frequency settings for the 1024 x 768 resolution in the monitor
manual: H=68.68 Khz, V=85Hz.
This is what I think I want to set up in Linux (I use redhat 6.2). How
do I set it? Someone told me to use xvidtune or xconfigurator. What's
the step-by-step procedure to use it? Is there any danger of damaging
the monitor or video card?
Thanks for any help

No. You have the option of targeting the Custom installation in whatever
partition(s) you have available. In my case, I created a 2Gb root
partition, / , and a 160Mb swap partition(more that double the amount or
RAM). You can create the target partition(s) using disk druid(which is
suppose to be easier but some people say it's flaky) or fdisk (not so user
friendly but gets the job done-command line oriented). After you create and
format the partition(s), the next step asks you which partition do you want
to use as root (/) and which is swap.
You have to format the linux root partition in type 83, linux swap partition
in type 82 (using fdisk or diskdruid).
Another issue is wheather or not to use Lilo (linux loader) and if you do,
wheather to put it in the MBR(master boot record) or in the beginning of the
root partition. In my case, I put Lilo in the root partition because I
used Boot Manager to boot into other operating systems.
An important point to note is that the partition where the system boots into
Linux, in my case the root partition, must be entirely within the 1024
cylinder limit (this is about 8.4Gb).
I installed Redhat linux 6.2 on my slave drive using Custom-class install,
installing "everything"(takes about 1.6Gb). If you have any questions that
I might be able to answer, feel free to email me. I am also new to linux,
but my install seemed to go OK.

Well, I too am having problems. Apparently because of the linux "monolithic
kernel" I need to patch the source and recompile the kernel to get the
latest version of the smbfs file system to properly read files on our OS/2
server.
Not just a matter of updating a pre-compiled driver file.
Have fun, Bruce.

I'ts not a bug - it's a feature. You are running your video card in=20
8bpp (256
colour) mode. This permits the use of a maximum of 256 colours, chosen=20
from a
palette of colours. Acrobat is picking a different palette! To remedy=20
this,
use 16bpp (32,000 or 64,000 colour) mode, or higher (24 or 32bpp).
Have fun!

Um... These are usually "Winmodems". If you are very lucky it isn't. I=20

Hi Richard,
Not sure if this will make any difference, but on my system the
filesystem argument looks like this:
fs=iso9660
The entire line looks like:
/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0
BTW, I'm running Mandrake 7.1.
