Subject: Please help installing networked printer on RH6.2

I have two RedHat 6.2 machines connected in a local
network (192.168.0.0 segment). I installed my HP
LaserJet 5L printer on one machine (let's call it
machine A), and it works fine. I called it lpHPLJ5

I'm trying to use printtool in the other machine (let's
call it machine B) to be able to print from machine B
using the printer attached to machine A (i.e., through
the network). So, I run printtool from machine B; I
click on "Add", then put a name to the printer (lpHPLJ5,
as in the other machine), select the filter (HP LJ 4/5/6
series -- the same filter I used when I installed the
printer on machine A). In the field "Remote Host" I put
192.168.0.2 (the IP address of machine A), in "Remote
Queue" I put lpHPLJ5; I click OK. Everything seems fine
(in that I don't get any error messages).

But now, I do `lpr -PlpHPLJ5 file.txt' from machine B,
and it does absolutely nothing.

If I do `lpq -PlpHPLJ5' (also at machine B's prompt)

It tells me:

susie: waiting for queue to be enabled on 192.168.0.2

<list of queued jobs>

lpd: lpHPLJ5: Host name for your address (192.168.0.3) unknown.

I more or less understand what it's telling me... Only
I don't have the least clue about what am I supposed to
do (i.e., what am I missing or what I did wrong). BTW,
the second message I don't get it! The hostname for
192.168.0.3 (machine B) is susie (as the first error
message indicates!!)

Any help? Is this a typical problem? FAQ maybe?

Thanks for any info/pointers!

Carlos

Hi Felix

Glad I could be of service. :)

It seems to me that the Mandrake 7.1 install has the following glaring errors:

1) SCSI installs. Sometimes it can be alleviated (though not completely cured) by
disabling SCSI
disconnect if you have SCSI BIOS options.

2) It doesn't work properly if you have 'PnP-aware OS' selected in BIOS, even if you
have an IDE
CDROM. That's my experience anyway.

Maybe they'll fix these by the next release. *sigh*

Subject: FTP login problems
Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 23:28:53 GMT

I had ProFTPd working for a while for myself. When I added a user so my
friend could join, it kept kicking him into the anonymous directory. I
started messing with stuff to figure out why, because I could log in with my
account just fine, but I messed something up. Now everytime anyone, user or
anonymous, go to login they get refused and the logs say the user was not
found. I think it has something to do with the auhtentication in Linux but
don't know what. Any help?

I'm using ProFTP. Here's my pam.d/ftp:

#%PAM-1.0
auth required /lib/security/pam_listfile.so item=user sense=deny
file$
auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so shadow nullok
auth required /lib/security/pam_shells.so
account required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
session required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so

My ftpusers only has "root" in it. I checked the file permissions and
they're fine too. Any help? Thanks.

I have a similar problem. When my box boot I get the login prompt I enter a
username "root" and root's password and I get login incorrect. When infact
this is not the case. I tried all 5 other accounts and have the same
problem with them all. I rebooted in single user mode and then as root did
a su to one of the user id's changed the password and rebooted and still the
same problem. Does anyone have any clue what is going on here.

Thanks
Scott.

The gateway should be the private or public IP of the Masq-server?

running linux. Can anyone tell me what I need to do. How to partition

Ok, got myself logged in single user and quickly discovered that
/bin/login had changed during the day! I guess that tells me something.
Also ps, sc, and wuftpd. .bash_history had been redirected to
/dev/null, and /var/log/messages was missing most of the day.

My next question is, is there someplace I can do to either read about
this or report it? I'd like to discover exactly what happened to me
(i.e. was somebody using a known rootkit?) and how to protect against
it.

Thanks for the help!

You can just put 2401 in there on Linux, you don't need to mess with
/etc/services.

I'm sure you did do "kill -HUP" inetd after making the change, but I
thought it would be good to mention that anyway.

>I'm reasonably sure the paths and command lines are correct.

Well, that is a key thing. My CVS is in /usr/bin and the cvsroot
directory is spelled in lower case (CVSROOT in upper case is a
directory inside the repository).

You can disable it with the following.

/usr/sbin/setup
Choose System services
Remove the asterisk next to any services you don't want to start at boot
time and exit.

That distro is now several years old. It has some security issues, and
a just barely able to waddle ppp implentation.

Do yourself a really huge favor and pickup a RF6.2 CD, its only 6 months
or so out of date, and all the patches for security etc can be had
direct from redhat and the system brought up to current once you get the
basic 6.2 online.

With those updates, and a portsentry install, its fairly secure.

FWIW, RH7.0 is out this coming monday, but I think I'd sit on 6.2 until
the dust settles just a bit.

Cheers, Gene
