Ciao,
server linux sar sicuramente pi complesso.
Posso installare un firewall come Squid sul server ed essere sicuro di non
avere intrusioni, o esiste un firewall pi sicuro ?
Grazie

actually yes :-) Just make sure and to be save you've got a floppy so that you can
start up linux. When you compile the kernel you can issue the
command: make bzdisk and with this your working kernel is on the floppy.

I am just wondering whether you have created a filesystem on those
partitions? Typically:

    mke2fs /dev/sda5

>here follows the partition of fdisk :

>/dev/sda1 1 450 1966919 83 Linux native

>/dev/sda3 521 1020 2185500 5 Extended
>/dev/sda5 521 1020 2185469 83 Linux native

BTW, it is not possible to mount the extented partition since it doe
_not_ contain a filesystem but information about the following
partition(s) (in your case /dev/sda5).

I am new in Linux. On my pc i had w98. i tried to install RH 6.2.
During the installation process my video went away and i had no possibility
to see the messages furthermore. So the installation process went on with
the default parameters (i think). Now at the sistem start i have the LILO
prompt; if i wait linux start and everything is ok, but if i want to start
dos, the computer hangs and i have to restart the pc to go on (only with
Linux). It is not possible to start the machine in Dos mode neither by a
floppy formatted with the /S option, the machine start reading the floppy
and after few seconds hangs. Same also with a bootable CD. The Dos
partition is still alive, in fact mounting it under Linux i can see all its
contents.

Thanks for the replies.

Do you have xf86?

Under Linux cd ( as root) to usr/X11R6/bin/ and there type xf86config, you will
get a text-base configuration menu, just read the questions and answer
them. ( you need all the information about your Monitor, Mouse, and
Keyboard.

Since I don't use Red-hat I don't know if there is another set-up
tool.

It's quite safe to delete old modules, but it's better to keep 1
older bootable kernel in /boot, in /etc/lilo.conf, and its modules!

I start the server then open the file in Netscape but when I click

Well... You could delete it, if the new one is running stable. But I would
rather recommend you alway to have two bootable kernel images. If you fuck
up your 2.2.17 at some kernel upgrade, you could always boot the 2.2.14
and fix the problem.

But as I said, I like a lot to have the possibility to type 'old' at the
LILO prompt, when I have a bad day and that happens for most people I
think :-)

But if you really want to delete it, these are the ones to delete,
yes. Also the /boot/System.map-2.2.14-5.0 and /boot/vmlinux-2.2.14-50
should be safe to delete.

Yes, you can make sendmail, postfix, and qmail do it. However, you need

It's probably best to hire someone who already knows how to do it. That
way you don't start getting phone calls from 500,000 people every time
the server hiccups.

The other way to do it is with commercial software. Netscape Messaging
Server and Communigate Pro spring to mind. They are both designed to
scale in the ways that will be needed. Commercial Sendmail might also be
worth looking into.

Multiple servers will be a must. You need redundancy. Perhaps a
dedicated mail routing machine? Separate POP3/IMAP server(s)? LDAP
server? Storage arrays?

It's not something you can go ahead with based on the advice in a couple
of Usenet articles, nor will it only take one weekend to setup...

So, hire somebody who knows how to do it. :-)

Don't know if I can help, but after reading your post, I went back and
took out a bunch of garbage I'd wound up with in modules.conf while
trying to get rid of the sound-slot-etc. and sound-service-etc. etc.
errors I was getting while trying to configure my opl3sa2 and wound up
with changing the (alias char-major-14 sb) to (alias char-major-14
opl3sa2) and then my options ie:

options opl3sa2 mss_io=0x530 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0 mpu_io=0x330 io=0x220

and everything came up working fine for a change. It took some farting
around with my isapnp.conf to get all the settings in it to match the
card.

When I'd started playing around with the 2.3 and 2.4 kernels, I'd lost
sound on my RH 6.1 system. Now running my Award Bios set to pnp os
installed and configuration set on manual, with the pnp compiled into
the kernel, sound compiled in and the Yamaha stuff compiled as modules
and what I described above, all seems to be working okay.

I've got this card to work in the past as a SoundBlaster compatable, so
it ought to work back the other way if you can get your irqs and ios to
match your card and get it to initiate with the options in modules.conf,
you should be on your way.

Implications
========

So suppose that you are required to come up with a model that explains not
only what your software does (which various OO technologies do with varying
success), but also where your software comes from. This requirement would
force you past the von Neumann model, where the program store P defines the
execution environment E:

             P --> E

Non-trivial computer systems are constructed from a collection of software,
installed in some order. So in non-trivial computer systems, there always
exists some independent definition of P. Call this definition X.

             X --> P --> E

Furthermore, X is not generally a single source. If X is a disk image
applied to the hard drive (the P of a computer system), then X may in fact
be a single source. But usually it isn't.

So X is made up of a set of components representing the number of installs n
required to build up P in a given computer system.

             X = {X(1), X(2), X(3),...,X(n)}

Our current software architectures do not model X. In fact, they doesn't
tend to model installation and integration at all. IT spends 75 percent of
their money in this area, but it doesn't seem to be important enough to
study.

With open software, modeling X is even more important, since the various
components of X come from different sources, and in many different releases
and versions. Understanding and modeling how this is done will lead to
better solutions and mechanisms for software development and distribution.

Fun Implications
===========

This math may remind some (those with a biological background) of DNA. It
should. I would claim that all process based systems are forced into this
model, by definition. X forms the DNA for a computer system. Genes are the
components of DNA, much like some X(i) is a component of X.

Thus there is a very literal genetic component to computer systems because
both a living cell and a computer system are process based systems.

The genetic nature of computer systems can not be circumvented.

Really Fun Implications
===============

So software is defined by the "genes" of a computer system, the installation
medium. That means that a software package, like what I might buy at a
computer store, represents genetic material.

The biological term for the exchange of genetic material is... sex.

Adding software to my software library is a literal form of computer sex.

So all along, our computers have been using us to spread their genetic
material, like bees.

We are also their agents for developing new genetic material, and we are the
environmental agents that supply the developmental pressures that drive some
genetic material to extinction, while other material (like Linux perhaps?)
flourishes.

And most of the alternatives to Linux require people pay for their
software...

I used to be able to mount /dev/hdd1 with "mount /dev/hdd1 /backups"

 Any suggestions?

 Cheers,

Hi,

You can use xvidtune if your problem is only a off-center display. Use it
with caution and don't modify critical values (h-sync et v-sync) with
large increments.

I've uses xvidtune for my Mandrake 7.1 and now my display is right
on the center of my monitor.

Good luck :)

Subject: help for netatalk permissions
Date: Fri, 22 Sep 2000 12:48:38 GMT

All mac and pc clients can connect to shared directroy on linux server,
let's call it: /server/common-share

On the linux server: common-share dir have drwxrwxrwx permissions...
macs and pcs clients connect to common-share as user test1 belonging to

Directories creted by mac clients have strange dwrxrwsrwx permissions...

I tried to change that permission to drwxrwxrwx...but still pc clients
