Did you check out if the fontserver starts properlly ? Check out under
/tmp if the dir .font-unix exists, if not try to start the server
manually.

Hi,
I'm thinking of getting an OnStream ADR50 to be used on a Linux server

no answer so far.
Is anybody using the OnStream under Linux with tools like Arkeia or

Subject: Non 'alsa' players not working
hi!
I am trying to setup sound on SuSE 7.0 in an Alpha UP1000 computer with
an Ensonic 1371 card installed. I installed alsa and alsaplayer works,
playing cd music from the cdrom. Unfortunately other cd players like xmcd,
cda and cd-console don't produce sound, although they operate the cdrom
drive. Non-alsa mixers like aumix and smix seem to work. I have tried
disabling alsa (rcalsasound stop) and installing kernel drivers (insmod
es1371 and soundcore) but again only alsaplayer works.
Please, if you have any hints, reply by email since with deja-news killed
and my ISP dropping articles I will probably miss replies.
My thanks in advance!

I have gotten it up and working. Someone told me to put defaultroute in a
file after 'lock' (not at my linux box and dont remember what file I put it
in) and it worked. Although I have another question. It is a 56K modem. In
minicom it is set to 38400 and also when I call pppd it is with 38400. I
have tried to change it to 57600 in minicom, but then it wont dial, and also
in the pppd command, but then it doesnt start. Do you know how to change
that?

Already did that and no complaints.

Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 14:32:08 GMT
I would like RWX access to one of my windows partitions while logged in
as a linux user on my dual boot intel pc.
I can do it logged in as root, but as a non-superuser I have read-only
access.
/etc/fstab *currently* looks like this. Note last line:
/dev/hdb6 / ext2 defaults 1 1
/dev/hdb2 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
/dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat gid=0,mode=555 0 2
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/win_d vfat defaults 0 2
It's /dev/hdb1 line that I'm trying to make writeable.
I've tried a variety of things in column 4.
This is RedHat 6.2, Win95 (soon to be W2K).
I am new to linux, but with some unix experience.
ls -l /mnt/din_d and on its children always shows as:
rwxr-xr-x root root
I cannot seem to do otherwise, though it seems a reasonable request.
TIA,
Chuck Stevenson

What have you tried?
Either gid/uid/umask options can provide a solution
read then manpages of fstab and/or mount for more info

I want to set up a dual boot system by installing linux on my computer

files, without having to reformat the drive? I used the 'dir /a:h /s'

I used a similar procedure last summer to install 20 RH6.2 133MHz
Pentium boxen with ~2G harddrives. Each HD took about 30 minutes to
duplicate, which is about the same amount of time it took to to an
install. Except that I didn't have to tend the boxes and answer
dialogs.
I had two different HD types, and dd would not work between the
different types (even though both HD's had the same CHS settings). But
that was OK - I just got two setup's going at the same time.
After I moved the HD's into the target box, I changed the hostname/ip
address and ran Xconfigurator (because we were reusing the old monitors
with the newly acquired CPU's).

They're always placed in /lib/modules/X.Y.Z where X.Y.Z is the number of
the kernel the modules belong to. This is consistent with where mod-utils
like insmod, depmod, modprobe expect to find the modules which belong to
the running kernel.
I would say that you can change the kernel version number in
/usr/src/linix/Makefile at the top of the file. Further changes are
possible in the modules_install section of that file as well.

Well, not exactly. Philo doesn't really mean "log on as single user",
he means restart Linux in single user mode. This requires the ability
to either reboot the system, physically press the reset button,
physically press the power button or, of course, unplugging the damn
machine.
The first of these requies permission to execute the
halt/poweroff/shutdown programs successfully, which is generally given
only to root. The other 3 require physical access to the machine, which
is a whole different security problem!
Anyway, it's possible to password protect Linux Single Mode with the
root password.

I've never seen that error message before. It sounds like the system
thinks you're trying to mount an extended partition, not a filesystem on
a logical partition within the extended partition. This could happen if
you made a typo when entering the partition number. It would be helpful
if you'd provide some additional information:
- The output of "fdisk -l /dev/hda" and "fdisk -l /dev/hdc".
- The exact commands you're trying to use to mount the partitions.
- What filesystems the partitions you can't mount use (FAT-16, FAT-32,
NTFS, etc.).
My hunch is you're mis-typing the command, the partition uses NTFS and
you have no NTFS support installed, or your partition table is
corrupted.

There are two possible solutions:
#1:
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/win_d vfat uid={x} 0 0
Replace {x} with the UID of the user who must have access.
#2:
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/win_d vfat umask=0 0 0
Solution #1 gives access to just one user; #2 gives full R/W access to
everybody. There are variants on both of these. Check the mount man
page, and particularly the section on FAT mount options, for details.

check for the path, usually in /usr/bin, or else export it
