Hello,

I installed the Mandrake 7.0, and I want to recompil the kernel for use
the second processor and the soundblaster 64 AWE.
I'm logged as root,
cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig
make dep
make mrproper
make bzImage (14 minutes)
make modules (45 minutes)
make modules_install
make bzlilo (=> creation of /vmlinuz, check in /etc/lilo.conf
that image=/vmlinuz)
make bzdisk (=> cration de la disquette de boot)
reboot

Then, it doesn't work at all since 2 days. And now, I don't know what I
can do.
If you want other informations, explain to me how to get them because
I'm a newbie.
If someone can help me, thanks.

Best regards

thanks for the advice, that didn't work either.
the response was different this time: Permission Denied. quite strange,
being logged in as root, isn't it??

is somebody else doing things on my pc i don't know about, or is it just
my being a newbie that causes all this?

btw: I get the same message (cannot execute binary file) if i try to
install staroffice 5.1 (.tar.gz no .bin) instead of 5.2.
really strange, as i had no problems whatsoever installing it under SuSE
6.3...

can somebody help me out?

thx in advance

I went to Redhat and got the the latest anconda updates, same problem

Any answers or insights to how you fix a signal 7 error?

Ok, after getting all paranoid after I was cracked (see "Can't login!
Yes I was cracked"), I did everything everybody said -- got all the
RH6.2 packages, installed portsentry from psionics, and did all the
things it said to do in the "basics of securing a virgin redhat box"
document everybody pointed me to. All was well this morning, I was able
to ftp out, get my mail, and so on.

Then, I rebooted the machine. Oh why oh why did I ever reboot the
machine? :)

First thing that happened was I couldn't see the outside world.
Attempts to resolve any address were met with "unknown host". Did I do
something to turn off DNS? I didn't mean it! I pretty much took the
default options wherever I was asked, going on the assumption that I
have a pretty generic, average needs (this is just my home box, nothing
special). I do use a DNS outside my own box (at my DSL provider), so
perhaps I somehow disallowed myself to speak with it?

Second thing, I get to work and try to ping the box, no response at all.
COuld I have done something to my box myself that causes it not to
answer pings? Or is it just a stunning coincidence that right at the
same time, my DSL provider has crapped out on me? Or, worst of all, did
my cracker wander back, see my box back up, and decide to take me out
again? (This morning I hoped to telnet out of my box and then back in
to test my connectivity, but with DNS not working I couldn't).

This is particular frustrating, because in less than a week I'm getting
married and going on my honeymoon to Europe for two weeks. i was sort
of hoping to have my box back up and secured by then, but damnit I've
got a few things I need to take care of that aren't computer related, if
ya know what i'm saying.

Yep, as you guessed, DNS would help ;)
To check that's what you've disabled, presuming you're using ipchains by
way of packet filter, consider
        /sbin/ipchains -L
versus /sbin/ipchains -nL # no name resolution in this one

if the former hangs while the latter runs, it's DNS you've screwed. Open up
ports 53/udp to/from your upstream nameservers as appropriate.

For future reference, what I like to do when I can't be bothered writing a
whole firewall shell script is to do
        /sbin/ipchains-save > /etc/fw.rules
and make it run
        /sbin/ipchains -F; /sbin/ipchains-restore -f < /etc/fw.rules
on bootup. (This means I can play around with the rules dynamically and if
they work, save them out to be restored automatically on boot, or indeed on
ip-up when pppd dials.)

A remotely accessible CVS server is a piece of cake to set up, and is
quite secure, if you use ssh. On the server, set up the CVS repository
and a ssh daemon. On the client, set these variables:

 export
CVSROOT=:ext:YOUR-LOGIN-NAME@CVS-SERVER-HOST-NAME:/usr/local/cvsrepository
 export CVS_RSH=/usr/bin/ssh

Okay, I installed RH6.2 and it created a lilo.conf with the line:

boot=/dev/hda1

presumably because my /boot is a 15MB boot partition at the front of my 15GB drive.

Everything is okay and it booted fine.

I went to upgrade my kernel to 2.2.17 (from 2.2.14) but for some reason
when I added the new entry to lilo.conf to reflef my new kernel I would only get
"LIL-" on bootup.

After about 8 hours, I tried putting:

boot=/dev/hda

(instead of */dev/hda1*)

It boots for some reason!!! Wtf is going on? /boot is WITHOUT A DOUBT on /dev/hda1.

Subject: Re: Installing Win98, Win2000 and Linux on one PC?!
Date: Fri, 22 Sep 2000 12:49:27 -0400

Well, since I have done this setup before, here's how I did it.
System specs:
AMD k6-2 400
23 Gig drive as master drive on first IDE channel, partitioned in half (Win98/2000)
6 gig drive as slave drive on first IDE channel (Linux Mandrake)
Partition Magic

First, I installed 98 on the 23 gig drive, and then loaded Partiton Magic
to split the drive into two FAT32 drives (C: = 98/D: = 2000). Next, I
loaded 2000 onto the second drive, and setup the NT Loader on the master
boot record on the C:

Then, I formatted the second physical drive as an ext2, with a 128 meg
swap partition. Then, rebooted using a linux install disk and installed
Mandrake on that drive. During setup, put LILO *on the drive linux is
installed on*, not the MBR. Then, after setup was done, I rebooted with
the linux boot disk, and had to run dd (I forget the exact line of params,
but I'll post them as soon as I can find them), then put the bootsector on
the C: and edit boot.ini and put an entry like:
C:\bootsect.lnx="Linux"
in the boot.ini, and it should be fine after that.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Debian 2.2/Gnome/glibc problem
Date: Fri, 22 Sep 2000 11:24:33 -0500

While not new to Linux, I have switched distributions from RedHat to a
clean install of Debian 2.2 (potato). I'm having trouble getting any of
the gnome packages that I've installed using dselect to work. For
example, I'd like to run gnome-apt, but I get the error,

gnome-apt: error in loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libglib-1.2.so.0:
symbol getpwuid_r, version GLIBC_2.1.2 not defined in file libc.so.6
with link time reference

This is the same error for all the gnome programs, whether I obtain them
from a Debian mirror or from Helix. So, I'm a bit confused. I have (what
seem to be) the correct packages installed:

libc 2.1.3-10
libglib 1.2.7-2
gnome-apt 0.3.9
other gnome support packages...

The kernel is 2.2.17, the default installed by the Debian installer. I
doubt that the packages were built incorrectly with a different version
of libc, so I'm assuming I'm missing something or doing something wrong.
It appears it can find the libc6 library, so it's not that my ld.so.conf
file is incorrect.

Any help would be appreciated.

boot= tells it where to put the bootup little program, not where the
kernel is located. Thus the first time you put it onto the partition.
You must also have installed it into /dev/hda as well. When you rewrote
your system, things got moved slightly and suddenly the boot loader in
the MBR could not find your system.

/dev/hda means put the boot up stuff into the MBR. hda1 says something
else will take care of booting up the system, and it should look for the
linux loader on hda1 partition ( needed to for example uncompress the
kernel.)
