Subject: PM and LILO problems!!!!
Date: Sat, 23 Sep 2000 12:19:44 GMT
Hi again.
I am running RH linux 6.2 with kernel 2.2.17 on an Athlon 700 system
with 256 megs of ram.
I had everything working fine on a tripple boot. Win NT, Win 98,
Linux, using Boot Magic and Partition Magic.
Well, my NT crashed, and it was time to get rid of it anyway, so I went
into Partition Magic, and killed that partition. When I went to reboot
in Linux, Lilo would not work. I get just the LI of LILO on the screen,
and it locks up. All efforts to boot with floppy wound up in kernel
panic.
I thought that maybe it was because Everything had slid down one
partition,
/boot being on hda3 now instead of hda4, and so on down the line. So
I
went back into partition magic and put in an NTFS partition in where
Winnt used to be, just for padding, but it didn't work either...
I am fresh out of ideas here! I REALLY don't want to have to go and
reinstall everything... I put so much work into that system...
I don't know any params for the lilo boot disk either... I don't know if
they would help or not...
Help!
Thank you!
Chris

Correct the typos here; "172.178" should be "172.18"... and begin your
pool at 172.18.122.3 since 172.18.122.2 is already assigned (statically)
to eth1.

No, that address is already assigned to eth1 of the Linux box.

That's because of the typo in your dhcpcd file.

Hi,
No, just open a console, xterm or other and type xvidtune. A screen
prompt and you can adjust all of your monitor values. It should be safe
if you have your monitor specs. Otherwise, try small increment values.

Subject: IP Masquerading
Date: Sat, 23 Sep 2000 13:28:41 GMT
I am trying to get port forwarding for CUSeeMe and am
working throught the process and having problems.
I am using Redhat 6.1 with kernel 2.2.12-20. I am loaded the
latest ipmasqadm rpm package.
I have the appended the following to the bottom of my
/etc/rc.d/rc.local file
# 1) Flush the rule tables.
/sbin/ipchains -F input
/sbin/ipchains -F forward
/sbin/ipchains -F output
# 2) Set the MASQ timings and allow packets in for DHCP
configuration.
/sbin/ipchains -M -S 7200 10 60
/sbin/ipchains -A input -j ACCEPT -i eth0 -s 0/0 68 -d 0/0
67 -p udp
# 3) Deny all forwarding packets except those from local
network.
# Masquerage those.
/sbin/ipchains -P forward DENY
/sbin/ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.1.0/24 -j MASQ
# 4) Load forwarding modules for special services.
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_cuseeme
# To forward incoming CUSeeMe ports
ipmasqadm autofw -A -r udp 7648 7648 -h 192.168.1.2
ipmasqadm autofw -A -r udp 7649 7649 -h 192.168.1.2
ipmasqadm autofw -A -r tcp 7648 7648 -h 192.168.1.2
ipmasqadm autofw -A -r tcp 7649 7649 -h 192.168.1.2
ipmasqadm autofw -A -r udp 24032 24032 -h 192.168.1.2
# To lock in the incoming or outgoing ports to the right
port
ipmasqadm autofw -A -d udp 7648 7648
ipmasqadm autofw -A -d udp 7649 7649
ipmasqadm autofw -A -d tcp 7648 7648
ipmasqadm autofw -A -d tcp 7649 7649
I am getting masquerading working fine. My internal
machines are accessing the Internet OK
EXCEPT----I am not getting CuSeeMe to forward to my internal
machine on my network.
I am getting an error when Linuxconf runs at startup:
setsockopt: Protocol Not Available
setsockopt: Protocol Not Available
Loading Local~
I know that 6.1 with kernel 2.2.12-20 has all these
functions built in. What am I doing wrong?
Also, I see that I have a number of subdirectories in my
/etc/rc.d directory called:
/etc/rc.d/rc0.d
/etc/rc.d/rc1.d
/etc/rc.d/rc2.d
/etc/rc.d/rc3.d
etc through to /rc6.d
each of these directories have a file called s99.local which
looks like my rc.local file
is this normal?

I don't think Newport News is a media organisation, rather a ship building
company. I believe the name comes from the city of Newport News.
In anycase I can see it now..
Sailor : "We have received a message from the enemy sir".

Subject: Upgrading 2.2.14->2.2.17 loses my /dev/hdd
Date: Sat, 23 Sep 2000 14:38:22 GMT
In my previous message, I was having trouble getting the kernel to recognize
my last drive, and I think I've narrowed it down to the Ali15x3 driver. This
morning I recompiled the kernel with the "Ali15x3 chipset support" turned
off. Voila....the partition check of /dev/hdd1 came through:
Partition check:
hda: hda1 hda2 hda3 hda4
hdb: hdb1
hdd: hdd1
However, I could not tweak with hdparm -d1. I then reintroduced the ali15x3
chipset support, recompiled the kernel and got on bootup:
Partition check:
hda: hda1 hda2 hda3 hda4
hdb: hdb1
hdd:hdd: lost interrupt
unknown partition table
So, does anybody have a clue as to what I should do?
Cheers,
Andrew

Each of the numbered files runs depending on the runlevel e.g. rc3 if
you're at runlevel 3 (boot to console login), rc5 if runlevel 5 (boot to
GUI mode)
The s99.local will run last in each of these modes because the commands
there are usually specific to your machine, you can even put in your
custom ipmasq there if you want, usually things having to do with config
that you want to initialize or get out of the way right away

Well, I am far from an expert but why do you use ipmasqadm : isn't ipchains
is sufficient ?
Are you sure ipmasqadm and kernel 2.2 are ok together ?
I ask you that question because CUSeeMe, that does not work, is used with
ipmasqadm
And I know that ipfwadm does not work with kernel 2.2, may be the same with
ipmasqadm ?
May be am I saying something stupid ... may be not !!! this is my little

I am trying to install RH6.2 onto an AMD 600MHz Duron machine.
Installation from the CD appears to proceed successfully, but when it
reboots from the hard-drive I get a message saying "Disabling CPUID
Serial Number - General Protection Fault 0000". The CPU registers are
then dumped to the screen and the boot sequence terminates.
I can't find any mention on any of the newsgroups about 6.2 and AMD
Duron incompatibilities so any ideas would be appreciated. The machine
was checked over by the supplier (a RAM stick was replaced and Win98
installed to check the machine) but I continue to have this problem.
Thanks,
Mike.

OK, I had a feeling the Duron doesn't have a serial number to diable
and I've finally discovered the 'linux x86_serial_nr=1' kernal option
to disable serial-number disabling...
