My RH 6.2 laptop does the same thing but it eventually brings the interface
up.
What kind of ethernet card is it? Is it a pcmcia card? Type 'dmesg', does
it give any extra information? What does /var/log/messages say?
you can try to bring up the interface manually with:
ifconfig eth0 YOUR_IP broadcast YOUR_BROADCAST netmask YOUR_NETMASK
for example
ifconfig eth0 128.61.32.230 broadcast 128.61.32.0 netmask 255.255.255.0
then type 'ifconfig' and see what happens.
if you want to see where your eth0 is being initialized try
grep "eth0" /etc/rc.d/*
Hope that helps.

You did not tell if you get this at your first boot-up ( was Linux running on
the pc at all?)
here is link
http://judi.greens.org/c/h/get/lilofaq.html
both of you did not tell if there is another OS on the same pc. (Because Lilo
needs to reside below the 1024 Cylinder) If both Linux did not run yet, then
there is a problem with the Hard disk.
as to the boot disk: This depends on the distribution Patrick; f..e Example
with SuSE you can use yast.

Amen. I couldn't follow the stream of thought, and if I couldn't, few
people can. I think he is trying to say something connected with the
old idea of maintaining a programs history along with its code. In, say,
a functional programming environment (like unix!), this happens naturally
at the level of files when you rewrite code, so long as you are careful
to copy and modify the code, and not to modify it in situ, because then
the old inode is preserved. So long as it is referenced, it can be
recovered! People have sometimes suggested or even tried turning "rm"
into an operation like "mv foo hiddendir/foo.verN". He may even
be suggesting the idea of doing this at the object level, whatever
the object level is in the system in question(in unix, this IS the file
level). That could be lines of code, or even bytes.
Hey! I understood that!

Slackware 3.X -- A, AP, and N disks -- should get you up and running. It
helps to have a computer with a CD-ROM for copying the disk images over to

Slack' rescued my son's old 386DX33 w. 8 MB ram from the scrap heap. With

I don't if this will solve your problem, I used to get rid of my LI problem on
my Redhat 6.2.
Some background. I have a 40G hard drive but Compaq won't give me an update to
my BIOS. It can only access 8G.
I had MaxBlast (EZ-Bios), a disk overlay and I jumpered the 40G hard drive as a
2G drive.
Here is my arrangement of my harddisk from beginning to end. (Pardon the
numbering sequence but it works)
16M hda3-/boot (This is important, the boot partition must within the 1024
cylinder, that is why it is in the beginning of the disk)
216M hda2-swap
7G hda4-/
32G hda1-windows
I applied lilo to hda3 partition and made the partition active.
If I applied lilo to hda partition, it messed up my EZ-BIOS.

Your remaining harddisk partition numbers should be the same after blowing
the NT partition away.
The first thing I would do, is go to the BIOS and disable and enable your
harddisk controller, to automatically rescan your harddisk parameters.
If that does not bring your LILO back to life, there is only one option,
Bring out your Redhat 6.2 CD.
Do an upgrade (NO WORKSTATION, OR SERVER OR CUSTOM INSTALL).
Select something small to upgrade.
At the end of your upgrade, it should redo your lilo.
Hopefully the new lilo will be bootable.
Configure your lilo to triple boot again.

I had a Win98 booting problem, but my Windows 98 system files crashed.
I had to made my /boot partition not active (this is where lilo starts off from)
and made my windows98 partition active.
I booted with my windows98 floppy disk
a:> sys c:
I made my /boot partition active (where lilo starts from)
and all is well.

Well, it wasn't obvious to me! :-)
Just to check: are we talking here during installation? Or is it at
the LILO prompt (at boot time) that I have to enter that? (if it is
at installation, I guess I would have to choose "expert" at the
installation boot prompt?)
Thanks!

Thanks Mick for the reply. I did find a way to solve
my problem similar to what you suggest. It turns out
the boot floppy is a Minux formatted boot disk, so I was
able to mount it after booting and cp the vmlinuz
to my MSDOS partition on the hard drive. From there
it's just a one line LOADLIN command and I was under
way. Now I just have to figure out how to recompile
a new kernel...within about 40megs of space.

Hello,
Something in my linux system is causing it to crash periodically if it
runs for longer than about 4 days.
I have a fair number of "servers" running and perhaps one of them is
causing the problem.
At some point in the near future I'm going to try a kernel update. In
the meantime I want to setup a routine to "restart" the computer
nightly say at about 2:30 AM.
Can I simply put a call to "shutdown -r now" in my root cron to occur
daily at 2:30AM? Any problems doing this?
