I also have problem with my 40G maxtor harddisk using RH6.2.
I have trouble formatting 20G at the end of the harddisk for linux. (My harddisk
started to formatting fine then bad smacking sound
and never formated 20G parition.)
I had to arrange my harddisk with 7G at the beginning for linux while 32G at the
end for windows, because of lilo
booting up windows beyond the 1024 cylinder.
I would recommend updating to the latest kernel and getting the latest lilo. (or
get RH7.0 when it is available)

The two seperate 128 MB swap partitions are no longer necessary as the
Linux kernel has supported larger partitions for quite a while. AFAIK it
has even a negative influence on the performance as the kernel uses the
two partitions similar two a raid0 device and thus produces a lot of
seeks.

Hello,

I was trying to get something working on my system and I edited my working
lilo.conf file so I can boot from /dev/sdb1 on my RedHat 6.2 system. It
didn't accomplish what I wanted it to, so I want to switch back booting to
/dev/sda1 so I can resume working.

Now, when I boot it tries to boot to /dev/sdb1 (there is no /dev/sdb1) and
then drops me into single-user mode to try and fix the problem. Here's the
problem: once I enter single-user mode and try to modify lilo.conf to boot
off /dev/sda1 instead of /dev/sdb1, it says that / has been mounted
read-only and will not save the changes. If I do a 'mount', it shows / as
being mounted rw, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

How can I change my lilo.conf file back to my original configuration: to
boot off /dev/sda1?

Thanks for any help you can provide...

Try CTRL+ALT+(Keypad +) or CTRL+ALT+(Keypad -) while in X. Also, you
might want to think about reading the XFree86-HOWTO. HTH.

the simplest solution is just to override the choice of
root FS partition that lilo wrote into the boot sector.
that is, enter "linux root=/dev/sda1" at the lilo prompt.

Hi,

I successfuly connected and pinged my remote host after reading an excellent
read me on dial-up PPP (mail me and I will send it you).
However, I have come stuck. I cannot see further , or am not allowed past
the remote host. The readme says it's a problem with my 'defaultroute' but
as it does not go ito great length about this, I am at loss what to do next.
My ISP uses PAP - seems to work with the standard type and I am dialing in
through Xterm with all deamon and PPP activity logged in realtime.

My log seems to be without error (except a few 'Rej') and gets to displaying
local and remote IP's. In the PPP-options file I added the line:
'defaultroute' as it was not there and the readme said it needed to be.

Could anyone point me in the right direction to which files I should be
looking at and errors/log to watch for.

Cheers,

moz

Change a line inside of your XF86Config line from PS/2   --->    IMPS/2

Restart X and see if that does it. I sounds like that mitsumi needs to
used the MS mouse protocol.

but things don't seem to work. I even tried the firewall creation
script on Robert Ziegler's website. I get some traffic, but get
plenty of messages about host "" not valid or it refuses to let DNS
traffic thru (mildly inconvenient). Is there a utility out there that
will look through your firewall script and kick out obvious errors in

after looking at it for a while, everything just runs together.

Last night I installed the GL addons for Xscreensaver 3.23. They seemed
to work fine. This morning my system is totally locked up. Only way
out was to reset. After the reset everything comes up fine including
ipchains and masqurading but X will not start. Here is the error.

[root@ubr-165 /root]# startx

This is after a clean reboot logged in as root. The log says the same
thing. I do not use any graphical logins. I boot straigt to runlevel3
and then startx from there. There are no X processes running as far as
I can tell. This one has me stumped pretty good. I'm using Mandrake

I'm not sure that a script would be up to that level of checking. You don't
say
if you are using ipfwadm or ipchains, but in either case, you might look at
    http://www.digitalelephant.org/computing/fire/fire.html
for an explanation of the one good way to set up a masquerading firewall.

I do believe you are right in thinking there is a lockfile somewhere so
that in my opinion is the problem. However I can't recall where it is
located. It might be .Xlock but I doubt it. I'm pretty sure X does make
some sort of lock file though. Someone on here should be able to
provide you with much more information in order to help you but this is
at least a start.

it means you are giving it execute permissions just like Chris said was
the problem. Binaries are executable however the permissions also need
to be set properly for the process to work flawlessly, otherwise u get
errors like you have already seen.

the opposite way u saved them, 'tar -xvf filename.tar
locationofrestoration' (I know that untarring w/o specifying a place
will obviously untar in the current directory and as i dont use tar to
backup files myself i'm unsure as to how to specify a different
directory but I assume u just list it at the end of the command).

df command should tell u, once the tape is mounted, otherwise i'm sure
there are utilities out there u can download that will help make
managing all this easier. As I haven't any experience with tape drives I
could be wrong here.

The sdame problem, that I worked around with the command XSET M x y, where x
and y are the speed and the acceleration.(very similar to the slides of
graphic interface).

Try different values, maybe that you have some satisfying tuning of the
mouse (My mouse is working but I am not yet happy about movements: it seem
that automatic installation is erratic..
