Read that this is so on one of the Linux sites. I picked up the 6.9 beta a
few weeks ago from a computer fair and it looks ok so far. A couple of nice
surprises..my USB mouse was detected and working straight away and so was my
SCSI scanner. I was quite impressed with the scanner as I'd been struggling
with it before.

The KDE on the 6.9 I have is a bit iffy at the moment but Gnome seems fine.

I haven't really had time to have much of a play around yet.

Hello!

I've just downloaded and compiled th 2.4.0-test8 kernel. This all works
fine, but when I run "lilo -c" I get the message "Kernel too big". Well
-- LILO thinks the kernel's too big, thats clear, but I've stripped
down the configuration as much as I possibly can. Almost everything is
modularised and I still get a kernel size of approx. 1.9M. 1.9M:
shouldn't this be small _enough_ for LILO (0.21) anyway???

How can I get around this?

You will need to configure it as a samba printer under an x-windows program
called printtool

You have to make sure samba is working so you can see your linux machine
through the network neighbourhood icon for this to work.

If you have any problems drop me an email

1.9mb is bloody massive for a kernel boot image

When you get to the stage of creating the boot image do a make bzImage
instead of make zImage

reading the kernel howto says to use 'make bzImage' instead of 'make
zImage' when one gets a kernel that is too big.

Please pardon me if I'm starting too far back, but you are clear,
aren't you, that setserial does not SET the modem, but INFORMS Linux of the
setting? Three possible ways to SET a modem:
        * hardware jumpers
        * DOS utility (!)
        * isapnp   (man isapnp)
        Cheers

I am using an SB Live card with a Mandrake distribution. Very similar
to yours. Things are fine. I suggest that you disable the Plug and
play support in your BIOS. Linux is not currently a plug and play OS.
All of the hardware resources must be assigned at boot time.

Plug and Play allows dynamic allocation of these resources. Your BIOS
should pick sane values. Check out the pnpdump, isapnp and
ipapnp.conf man pages. Also, I have had good luck with the ALSA
drivers for sound. The other drivers (OSS) didn't seem to work too
well for me. (Very subjective comment, I don't intend to deride
anyones work...) Here is a link to get you started,

[can someone tell me how to copy text from one program to another
under GNOME/X-windows? I have the URL in a Netscape location window,
but I have to retype it in my emacs/Gnus window. That really sucks.]

Bill

Hi,

I am having a problem trying to fdisk this drive which is attached as
/dev/hdb on IDE0 as a slave. Whenever i use fdisk to delete all the
partitions on the drive, it seems to work. As soon as I create an
extended or primary partion (ext2), and reboot after mounting the
drives, fsck complains that I have bad superblocks and i should use

$>e2fsck -b 8193

This of course doesnt work. The drive used to have FAT32 partitions on
it, but I am trying to fdisk it with ext2. Is there something I dont
know?

Problem solved..... Something did crash my Xserver, my suspicion is the
XscreensaverGL stuff. Thats been unistalled.

As far as X refusing to start. That turned out to be some extra security I had
set up. Basically PortSentry was bound to port 6000 which X needs to work. Once
I toned down securty a bit X came right up. I was being anal by having
PortSentry block alot of ports in addition to IPChains but hey I'm paranoid.
Anyway watch out for things like this I almost blew away my whole system.

Above all do not give up if you run into problems believe me I was really close
to a complete reinstall. Usually the problem is staring you in the face. In my
case it was, X couldn't open a connection because the port it needed was
blocked. These kinds of things that we all solve will only make you a better
Linux admin. Hang in there!!!

Thanks for all the replys

Jack

They are the same 'blocks' reported by df, du, and ls -s: 1024 bytes,

Hello, and thank you for your time in advance. I am experiencing
difficulties installing Debian GNU/Linux on my system, which has a 3ware
IDE RAID controller. The specific drive setup is two 15 gig drives in
RAID-0 striping formation. I have managed to get Debian to recognize the
disk at startup by swapping out the rescue disk kernel with a kernel I
compiled with support for the 3ware controller. However, when I got to the
install program in Debian, the installer saw 2 disks of 30 gigs in size! I
honestly don't know what to think... should I continue with the install,
with the assumption that fdisking one disk would be writing to both, or
should I try something else? I have a partition that has some data on it
which I would rather not have to replace (though it is backed up). Anyway,
if anyone has any advice, I'd really appreciate it.
