Thanks for the advise. There is a file that exits like this on my working
laptop. However on the system with the problem the /tmp directory is
completely empty. Permissions for /tmp are world read write execute. I
think there may have been some corruption that took place when the system went
down. I've reinstalled X 4.0.1 from the binaries again but nothing has
changed.

Subject: Kernel panic...
Date: Sun, 24 Sep 2000 10:31:13 -0700
Hello,
A very vague question here. What typically (or is most likely to)
causes the "kernel panic" message to appear.
I have a RedHat 6.1 system that used to run for months without a
reboot. Now all of a sudden it will rarely make it 6 days without
going into Kernel Panic.
In my previous Xenix experience I found that these were typically
caused by memory. So I have replaced the RAM. Still no good.
I then heard that sometimes it can be processor related. The machine
was runing on a 400 Mhz Celeron using a slot 1 adapter card. So I
pulled that and put in a true/blue Pentinum III 550. Flashed the
motherboard bios and everything. Still no good.
The RH 6.1 install has not been "customized" in anyway. The machine
runs apache 1.3.9, an amateur radio server aprsd 2.1.4, setiathome,
samba, and the spaniel java chat server.
I guess I'm down to the motherboard at this point. Right? Could this
be a software issue? I'm on kernal .12 and I see that .17 is out.
Should I upgrade to that?
Any help would be appreciated. I would like this machine to basically
run and run like I know that linux is capable of!

One other item. If you are using Norton Utilities, Disk Image parks it's
image files at the end of the disk.
Search and remove any image.* files. Be sure and disable the disk image
portion of the NU until you have completed the process...

Has anyone gotten this UPS to function properly under Linux? That is,
can it shutdown and restart the computer using powerd?
I'm reading the UPS-HOWTO now. However, a quick answer as to whether
this thing uses a proprietary serial protocol (RS-232 cable) or
something that Linux can understand would be very much appreciated.
Thank you.

Just in case, it wouldn't by chance be a ps/2 or serial mouse identity

Subject: Installation fails for Adaptec (AIC7880) SCSI Controller
Date: Sun, 24 Sep 2000 21:06:05 +0200
All
I am trying to install RH 6.2 on a IBM PC 330 Server which uses an
Adaptec SCSI controller and an IBM ServeRaid Raid controller. It seems
as if the SCSI controller driver is not loaded correctly.
Problem:
I boot from the CD and after the kernel loaded it says AIC7xxx loading.
Thereafter, it asks which installation medium to use; CDROM or Hard
Drive. I then choose CDROM and it asks for SCSI or Other. I select SCSI
(it is a SCSI CDROM). Then it presents a list of driver options, but
nothing for CDROM's. Instead it looks like SCSI controller cards
-without the AIC7xxx in the list. No matter what I select it just goes
back to the list again.
If I select the Hard Drive for installation medium it does exactly the
same as with the CDROM.
What I have tried:
1. I downloaded the latest boot image from Redhat.com which includes the
latest ServeRaid driver. It changes nothing.
2. I downloaded the latest AIC7xxx driver from RedHat. It still asks for
a CDROM driver, but this time the AIC7xxx driver is included in the
list. I select it. It then loads and show CD is initialising, but then
it goes back to the driver list and this driver is not their anymore.
>From there on it is exactly the same as described in the problem above.
The System:
Server Type: IMB PC server 330
SCSI controller: AIC7880 chipset. I don't know which AHA card. but I
think it is AHA-294x -that is what MS NT reports.
Raid Controller: IBM ServeRaid.
CDROM: Plextor SCSI, PX20TSI
Tape Drive: SCSI. I don't know which type.
SCSI DEVICE ID: The card was at 7. I changed it to 0. It reports no
other devices.
CPU: Pentium 2.
It is currently running MS NT.
Other remarks:
1. I have not checked the bios version yet. According to RedHat.com I
need version 3.60 or higher to work with the latest ServeRaid driver.
2. I have changed the terminations in the SCSI configuration utility to
active at both ends.
3. I disabled sync and disconnect for SCSI peripherals.
4. I have changed the CARD Device ID from 7 to 0, as mentioned.
5. When it boots it does report SCSI devices: 4 logical drives, CDROM
and Tape drive.
6. When I boot from CD -just before it reads the CD- it reports: No
SCSI boot devices found.
Questions:
1. Does anybody know how top solve this?
2. How can I get more diagnostic information from the setup program.
3. If the SCSI Controller driver loaded correctly, is it necessary to
load drivers for SCSI CDROM's, or SCSI tape drives.

So, after some help from a guy here, I got my sound card working.
I just can't figure out my modem. I know I'm supposed to look at dev/modem,
but I'm not sire what to do. Under Win98, the modem is on Com Port 2. Is
there any sort of config tool that I can run (kinda like the ones for the
sound card and monitor)?
Thanx

I'm not familiar with IBM systems so this is may or may not be the
answer.
Have you tried using the drivers disk and at the boot prompt enter
"linux dd"

If you are using Gnome you can try the "rp3" if your modem is compatable

Yes, I was trying to recreate what I assumed the "magic" graphic
installation software was doing under the hood, so that I could see
the error message myself.

Hmmm, the documentation with my RH 6.0 version (using the kernel off
the CD) seems to imply that 128MB is the largest swap partition that
that kernel supports. Thanks for the pointer though, I'll try it
after I get the new system up and running. (I'll also grab a more
recent version, but those are all things to do after the swamp is
drained.)

I don't have Norton Utilities and I already removed my swapfile and defragged
so unfortunately that's not it. I used to have DOS programs that would display
the drive sector by sector and you could click on an area to find out the file
occupying that area, is there anything like that available?
