I also have the same problem. PCMCIA is working properly, eth0 is being
loaded with the correct network information (which I input through
Linuxconf & netcfg), but the laptop still can't see anything out there on
the network... :-(

Any clues?

Subject: Mount System RO?
Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 17:39:38 -0700

Hi,

I'm working on a custom MP3 setup with linux but have a few issues...
I mainly need a quick booting kernel, but also I don't want any open
files since cutting the power to the system will be its only "proper
shutdown." :)

How can I boot linux and keep my partitions RO? I guess the kernel
would be similar to the kind the boot/rootdisks use? Would I need to
use a ramdrive etc?

Ideally, I'd like the entire drive to be FAT16/FAT32 partitions, boot
to dos, select my kernel and run loadlin to get the kernel going.

Any suggestions or links? I primarily use Slackware, but any flavor
will do.

TIA,
Michael

I'm using C. Scott Ananian's Linux PPTP (VPN) software to connect to the
AT&T fixed wireless broadband service
(http://a.j.schiavone.home.att.net).

I was wondering
if anyone knew of any tweaks to either the PPP daemon or
the PPTP software to allow me to increase the speed.

The AT&T service is advertised as being capable of 64
KBps downstream speed. The maximum speed I have seen
with the Linux PPTP software is 28 KBps. I just recently
patched my kernel to allow me to masquerade Windows
PPTP traffic through the Linux box. With that setup I
can get 56 KBps. So, there's definitely room for improvement
on the Linux PPTP side.

Any thoughts on how to increase the Linux PPP/PPTP
speed or links you can point me to would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

- Tony -

Date: 26 Sep 2000 01:29:47 GMT

The "official" Slackware 7.1 CD set includes a complete bootable system
on CD#2. It is really nice, as a recovery CD, to demo Linux on somebody
else's box, or to test new hardware.

But, every time I use this CD, my system's hardware clock gets set back 7
hours (when I shut down). What really bothers me about this is I cannot
figure out why it happens! Yes, the CD is set to US/Pacific time zone (7
hours before UTC in summer). On boot, it seems to do "hwclock --hctosys",
and on shutdown, "hwclock --systohc". There is no /etc/hardwareclock file,
and /etc/adjtime is set for LOCAL, so it should assume the hardware clock
is set to local time (not UTC) both when reading and writing the hardware
clock. So what am I not seeing here?

bzip2 -d filename.tar.bz2

which will leave filename.tar

Then,
tar xvf filename.tar

will untar the file into its original files.

First off, you _could_ just run it as syslogd -f /var/tmp/conf. If
you want to be a bit more sneaky, you could leave it running as usual,
but have /etc/syslog.conf point to a different file when it is
starting than what it is during normal operation. That way, the bad
guys reading your config file will think they have the correct one.
(This method avoids them noticing in a `ps` that the -f option was
given.) Going beyond this is probably more effort that it's worth.

I discovered that both cards wouldn't work together, but if I took one
(the modem card on slot0) and placed the network card there instead
(that is, from slot1 to slot0) the network card works fine. The problem
appears to be diagnosed below. I hope this helps to everyone out there
going through the same pains as I am.

MC
---

>From the PCMCIA-HowTo

3.8 Resource conflict only with two cards inserted

Symptoms:

Two cards each work fine when used separately.
When both cards are inserted, only one works.

This usually indicates a resource conflict with a system device that
Linux does not know about.
PCMCIA devices are dynamically configured, so, for example, interrupts
are allocated as needed,
rather than specifically assigned to particular cards or sockets. Given
a list of resources that appear
to be available, cards are assigned resources in the order they are
configured. In this case, the card
configured last is being assigned a resource that in fact is not free.

Check the system log to see what resources are used by the non-working
card. Exclude these in
/etc/pcmcia/config.opts, and restart the cardmgr daemon to reload the
resource database.

Doesn't the A20m use the same S3 Savage chip that the T20s have? I
had some trouble with generic VGA on my T20 too, but the accelerated
driver from ftp.s3.com worked fine with 3.3.6. (I don't think that
there's a XFree86 v4 driver for this chip yet.)

Sounds like you didn't successfully install X-Window... (do you have a
graphical login? Or is it just text?)

If it is just text, try running startx and see if you get the graphical
interface up and running... If not, give us a shout again and someone
will probably give you a hand solving the problem with the X
configuration.

There is a "doc/install-guide" directory on the CD that should help. As
for what to install? It depends on what you are going to use the system
for. I would say a custom install so that you can choose what you want
to install.

It is definitely a good idea to start X at boot.

It's also a good thing to know
1) How to boot without it. "linux 3" at the lilo prompt probably works for RHL users.
2) How to get to a text console to fix things. Ctrl-Alt-Fn where 0<n<7 usually works.
3) How to test changes. "startx -- :2" often works for me.

It's not so simple;-)

Java might be installed, but not set up for your use. Two ideas:

1 Ask the owner;-)
2 locate bin/java

The second's not guranteed to work either; I have it installed here, but it's
on an nfs-mounded drive and locate doesn't find it.

Changing this line in the syslog sources (syslog.c)

#define _PATH_LOGCONF   "/etc/syslog.conf"

and then compiling ought to do the trick.
