Checking the swap partition? The swap partition should certainly not be
checked - and not with e2fsck (as it is not ext2fs).

> Are there some tricks I could use before reinstalling the OS?

Login when prompted to, run 'mount -o remount,rw /' and edit fstab.

You swap partition should look something like:

/dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0

Change hda6 according to the location of your swap partition.

With 2.2.18, you have to download a raidpatch if your distro does not
include it. But it will work fine.

I have set up a machine, which does it perfectly well with 2.2.17, so I
believe the code is very stable in 2.2.X.

Is there a way to network with Ethernet to the WIN98 PC and thinnet to the

Is there a Phoneline Network Adapter (PNA) 2.0 driver available for the

You could try this that I got off the newbie mailing list. It's about
trying to work around the font thing:

You can do one of many things. First, let us check your font server
(xfs) status.

(as root)
/sbin/service xfs status

If it says something to the effect of;

xfs (pid 659) is running...

Issue this command next

(as root)
/sbin/service xfs restart

then rerun your X server:

startx

If you don't have your xfs server running, input this command:

(as root)
/sbin/service xfs start

then run your X server:

startx

If your X server still will not load, try this "soft" hack using your
favorite editor:

(as root)
Open up your XF86Config-4 file and go to the line:

    FontPath "unix/:-1"

uncomment this line. It should look like this:

# FontPath "unix/:-1"

Save and quit out of the editor. Restart your X server once again:

startx

I guarantee that this should make it work. If I am wrong, you can call
me Susan! LoL (still do this as a last resort)

Once your X server is running again, you can recomment your FontPath
once again:

(as root using your favorite editor)
go back to the line:

# FontPath "unix/:-1"

and remove the uncomment:

    FontPath "unix/:-1"

Save and quit. Your X server shall now run as good as new.

it maybe that you have exceeded the cylinder limit, and
it can find out. try to keep all the rpms in the base

The reason it looks like line noise is that it's an ELF executable, not a
script. All it does is print out the name of the terminal you're logged in
on (like /dev/tty1).

It comes from the package 'sh-utils'. Try:
        rpm -i --replacepkgs /mnt/cdrom/<path to RPMS>/sh-utils-*.rpm
This will reinstall the package and replace the corrupt file.

I don't know where the packages live in a Mandrake distro but in Red Hat
they're in /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS .

try re-formatting the entire hard disk. ms-dos fdisk is kind of
limited in not allowing a lot of functions... but u should use some
other partition editor and delete all partition info... and then
re-format... if a partition tool can read correctly a partition
table, i dunno who is complaining of the 'inavlid partition table'

so, if u installed any libs via another toute - tough luck! try to keep

I installed Mandrake 7.2 on a PC equipped with Asus A7V motherboard. I used
an
UDMA66 disk connected to the standard IDE controller (no ATA100).
I encounterded a problem about the configuraton of network card (based on
the Realtek

from
how the motherboard manages the interrupts (I had to make some adjustments
under Windows 2000 too, to find a working configurazion).
Both card have been detected correctly but Linux can not initialize them.
Somebody can help me?

Thanks a lot in advance.

In the "/usr/src/linux-2*/Doc*/kmod.txt" it says to issue the following:

in the appropriate "rc" file prior to running the "rc.modules" file.

Subject: netcfg Help for DSL Access
Date: Sat, 24 Feb 2001 20:06:35 GMT

I am totally stuck and in serious need of thoughtful and patient help.
I have been trying to use netcfg to configure my LinuxPPC correctly so I
can access the internet via my DSL router. On my Mac OS 9 side my
TCP/IP Control Panel (which allows seamless and hearty access) is
configured as follows:

Connect via: Ethernet
Configure: Using DHCP Server
IP Address: (provided by vendor)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router Address: 192.168.200.254
Name Server Addresses: 207.173.225.3
                         207.173.224.3

I have not been able to put the right combination of above settings in
netcfg so things work.

What is really frustrating is that it all did work just fine one night
about a week ago. I was happily skipping along the internet while
booted on my LinuxPPC root account to my hearts content. I apparently
did not realize my netcfg settings where temporary, did not save them,
and when I rebooted they were lost! AAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!

I have been trying to find the right combination of settings to no avail
in between my wifes demands that she be given access to LinuxPPC so she
can play Mahjong (which she plays repeatedly for hours).

Any help you can provide will be GREATLY appreciated. I have tried all
of the known standard sources (such as Redhat, which appears to assume
we are all doomed to dial in via 56K modems) with no success. In case
it helps, I am also using an OfficeConnect Remote 812 ASDL Router by
3Com.
