Date: Tue, 26 Sep 2000 10:56:48 -0500

Hi all,

I've got an adaptec 2940 UW scsi controller card and a plextor scsi
cdrom. When I boot, the controller card detects the cdrom, but does not
install the bios due to the lack any bootable device on the chain. As a
result, the cdrom doesn't seem to be detected by linux upon bootup, and
isn't available to be used. Is there a way to force the card to install
the bios, or to force linux to find the drive? I checked both the scsi
howto as well as the cdrom howto and didn't find the answer to this
problem.

I have a similar setup on a different box running the same RH6.2 setup.
That box does have a scsi HD on the chain though, so everything gets
detected just fine.

If it matters, I'm running RH6.2 on a pIII 600, 440bx motherboard.

thanks so much.

Hmm, not sure what your exact problem is, but network cards and networking
in Linux is not all that difficult. Go check out the howto's at
www.linuxnewbie.org and on www.linuxdoc.org .

A couple things to try to see if the card is even partially installed,

During boot, does it list a message saying, "bringing up network interface
eth0"? If it does say this then linux is trying to intiate the card during
boot. This is good. Next it will say whether or not it was successful, you
will get either a 'pass' or 'fail'. If it was 'pass', then the card is
loading properly but you may have your network info misconfigured. If it is
'fail' then we have a small problem.

The command 'lsmod' will lists the current modules loaded by linux or root.
Using this command, there should be a module listed for your card. Usually
it has a similar name to the name of your nic card. This will tell you if
the module is loaded.

'ifconfig' is used to list info about network cards, serial cards, and
others. Type it in and see if you get a listing for eth0 . It will also list
the network settings for the card. You can also use 'ifconfig' to set up
your network card, type 'man ifconfig' for more info.

If you could be a little more specific, it would help...

Hallo sean,
does the mount point /mnt/cdrom exists?
Have you tried

The BIOS had hardly done anything other than boot since about the advent of the
80386. Drivers nowadays talk directly to the hardware. EPROMS are too slow.

RH 6.2...thought I knew the problem, opened my mouth, now my foot is
stuck.

We cannot FTP to the linux box. A connection is established (Connected
to 47.xxx.xxx.xx), and then promptly refused (Connection closed by
remote host).

I thought the problem was simply the ftp line in inet.conf, but that
line exists just fine. The inetd process is running.

During the attempt to start an FTP session, the in.ftpd process can be
seen running.

Any thoughts other than 'get off the newsgroup, ex-linux idiot' ?

It sounds as if you need to update your pppd (it was the same when I started

This would be a good solution, if it fails try this (but it
shouldn't):

If.....

type in /etc/lilo.conf following

# Partition in which to install lilo,
  ....you need to know this, probably MBR, than type only hda, others
  if another bootman is installed....boot=/dev/hda
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
linear
default=linux
#can use your passwd. here
password=xxxxx
#using extended videomode or leave this line blank
vga=extended
#supresses prompt for passwd, but in spite it'll protect
restricted

#type in right image/kernel name... normally: vmlinuz
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-5.0
        label=linux
        read-only
        root=/dev/hda3

#DOS ?? on which partition
other=/dev/hda?
        label=dos

============

after writing contents in /etc/lilo.conf, reinstall lilo with 'lilo'

Trying to set up a serial port to answer incoming calls using uugetty

but won't stay parked on the serial port. It exits on the TERM signal.

Anyways, I've included a basic hardware config and

How do I prevent uugetty from exiting ?

likely have a CDROM and a CD-Writer. If they are both internal, then try

Na... I burned the two cds (disk 1 sio and disk 2 iso) on another machine.
I just have a cdrom on the machine I'm trying to install onto. .. I'm
booting from the cd and get a fair way into the install (pick english, us
key board etc..) but when it's time to get the image off the cd, the
installer replies, "can't find rehat cd"

Well, uugetty might be OK for phone calls from Hell, I do not know, but
for phone calls from earth use mgetty instead.

Did you do
kill -1 1
after you edited inittab?

]# Serial lines
]s2:12345:respawn:/sbin/uugetty ttyS1 38400 vt100

You are on ttyS1, so call this S1. Don't confuse yourself.

]# Dialup lines
]#d1:12345:respawn:/sbin/uugetty -t60 38400,19200 ttyS1 vt100
]#d2:12345:respawn:/sbin/uugetty -mt60 38400,19200,9600,2400,1200 ttyS1
]vt100
Note that this vt100 on a line by itself will cause trouble

]x1:4:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc.4

What in the world is this?

]# End of /etc/inittab
