Check http://www.linuxdoc.org for general Linux documentation, including
lots of HOWTOs, FAQs, etc. There are some HOWTOs that specifically
address dual-booting Linux with various other (mostly Microsoft) OSs. My
book, _The Multi-Boot Configuration Handbook_
(http://www.rodsbooks.com/multiboot/) covers this topic in some depth.

The big caution I have is that trying to simultaneously implement RAID
*AND* multi-booting may be tricky, particularly if you're trying to use
a software RAID solution. Hardware RAID (implemented on some high-end
SCSI adapters) may be easier to set up, but I've never looked into that.
Most individual users have no real need for RAID; it's most useful on
servers and whatnot that need ultra-reliable and/or ultra-fast disk
access.

Depends. What shell are you using? sh/bash? csh/tcsh? If the former,
then edit the PATH in the /etc/profile script. If the latter, then I
believe you can modify the PATH in /etc/csh.login or /etc/csh.cshrc -- or
add a line to modify the PATH if it's not already there.

Subject: Video Card settings for X
Date: Sun, 25 Feb 2001 16:08:56 -0000

Having spent 8 hours now in trying to get X up and running on my PC without
success, and 'probing' has failed, I feel a little help has been earned from
the Linux community. I'm a returning newbie and regrettably, I feel that I'm
slipping back into the world of Bill, as I become more frustrated, once
again.
My video card is a Roadster 3D AGP from Palit Daytona ( S3 Trio3D/2X 4M ).
Can anyone please point me in the direction as to where I can find the
settings for 'Devices' for this card. Nothing on the card manufacturers web
site helps and I cannot find reference to it in the man pages or Xconfig
helps, etc. So its been lots of trials and lots of errors but, alas, no X
running.
The best yet is a shaded blue screen after probably 3/5 minutes of startX.
There's a white cross which occasionally changes position on the screen. And
then nothing more and it all appears to ge into suspended animation! The
only way out, being to switch off the PC and try again, and again, and
again......
Any help will be much appreciated as to source(s) of advice and /or suitable
settings.
Roj.

I am running 1280x1024 @ 85Hz with a configuration similar to yours; your
problem is most likely the limitations of your monitor. You need to
check the "Monitor" section of your XF86Config file and make sure the
horizontal and vertical scan rates comply with the specifications of your
monitor, which should be available in the manual for your monitor or
possibly on the manufacturer's website. I've included the appropriate
section from my XFF86Config file; note that you should NOT use these
exact settings, but should use the ones available from the manufacturer
of your monitor.

I have a 20G Hard drive, and want to partition 5G for Linux, and 15G
for Windows.

Primary Dos partition(3G) Windows98
extended (17G)
        /(4.5G) linux ext2
        swap(512M) swap
        winpart(12G) windows fat32

Windows98 has been installed onto the Primary Dos partition, and
I partition the /, swap and winpart with RH6.2's Fdisk. and
successfully install RH6.2 onto the linux partion.
The problem is, the windows98 cannot properly access the partition,
winpart made by Linux's Fdisk.
Is it a good partition plan? Am I missing something important?

Cards don't work as anyone. And it works all the time. You mean you
can't access it as anyone else but root. Please get it right. You can't
fix anything if you don't grok what the problem is.

Add yourself to the access list for audio, or open up the permissions
on the audio device you are using to everyone. These are the most
probable causes.

Noooooo! It asked you to add each user who should be able to use sound
to the group of people allowed to use sound. That is nothing to do with
the sound card. Please learn the elements of what you are doing.

No it'll be a lot better, since 2.4. i snew and untried, and 2.2. is
old and trusted, And
raid1 will hardly blow your mind. Raid 10 or thereaboust is where you'd

If it works it is good.
But any changes will get you in trouble.
>From bitter experience:
Linux primary partition starting AND ending on cylinder 1. It will be
/boot.(type 83).
DOS (Windows xxx) primary partition, size whatever, drive C:.
Linux extended (type 85) and in it '/' (root), swap and any other
logical partitions.
DOS extended (type 5) and in it logical drives to your taste.
BTW the sequencing of extended partitions is not important as LILO and
kernel reside in /boot and the >1023cylinder boundary has no meaning.

In this way you keep each OS on its own primary and extended partitions
and both happy.
Try to use FDISK.EXE to create the DOS partitions and fdisk for Linux
parts. (It can be done with fdisk but some times it hickups, so few more
floppy bootings save a lot later).

Hello, there

Several weeks ago I installed Linux on 486, and presently I'm setting up an
ISA PnP modem on the same box. Apparently, Red Hat created a link from
/dev/modem to /dev/ttyS1. I did not create it. Yet, everyone agrees the
modem should be set up on ttyS2 or ttyS3.

My question is, Why is it recommended the modem be installed on ttyS2 or
ttyS3? What's wrong with a modem being instlled on ttyS1? The mouse is
already installed on ttyS0. In DOS it's acceptable to install a mouse on
com 1 and the modem on com 2.

I would certainly appreciate anyone's comments.

Subject: boot error, linux command trouble
Date: 25 Feb 2001 19:40:18 GMT

so these are my questions (background is below... thanks so much for any help
at all!):

- is there any way other than "linux rescue" that i can temporarily get into
my linux os so that i can change lilo.conf or copy vmlinuz to windows?
- why would "cp" and other commands not work in linux rescue?
- do you know any more about what my installation ("device... too big...") and
boot errors ("0x04") could mean?
- why did lilo not take over my boot sector?

background:
i just installed linux redhat 7.0, a custom install (i installed everything)
from my harddrive. all seemed to go well, except at the last screen of the
installation there was a weird error message (weird because it was kinda in
the background and split across the left and right sides of the screen), and
the install program didn't make me take note of it or anything. it just said
"install complete" or some such thing. this is what i could make out of it:
"device 0x0342 ... number is too big..." (that is the entirety of what i
could see. as i said, part was cut off at the edges of the screen.)

so 0x0342 i'm pretty sure is referring to my 16 MG boot partion, which is hdb2
on a 30 G drive that has 3 primary linux partions and one big extended
windows partion (win95 is installed on hda1, the only partion on a 6 G
drive)...

i told the install to put lilo in my mbr, but upon reboot, it booted directly
into windows as always.

when i used the boot disk i'd made during installation, LILO attempts to load
linux, but then gives "error 0x04"... which i'm pretty sure is referring to
hdb?

the troubleshooting suggestions i've run into all involve me having write
access to linux files (edit lilo.conf or use loadlin with vmlinuz). so i
booted into "linux rescue" with the the install boot disk. i can mount the
floppy and the windows partions... but oddly, when i try to copy vmlinuz, i
get "cp: not found." ?? same goes when i try to copy anything to anywhere.
this also applies to "mv" "pwd" and other simple unix commands, although
others (like "ls" "mount" "cd" etc) work fine.

thanks so much for any suggestions...

Subject: how to make RAID card work in 2.4.2 after it worked in 2.2?
Date: Sun, 25 Feb 2001 19:51:49 GMT

Well, I got my linux books yesterday (Running Linux and RH 7.0
Unleashed),
and have been playing around. I've managed to upgrade the kernel from
2.2
to 2.4.2, and it seemed to go pretty well. I have two questions, one
relatively minor and one that's troubling me.

First, the easy one. When I compiled the new kernel, the compiler
gave a
lot of warnings to the effect of "pasting would not generate a valid
preprocessing token". There were probably several dozen of these
scattered
throughout the output. The seem to be warnings rather than fatal
errors,
since I can boot to 2.4.2 fine. Any idea what (if anything) I may
have done
wrong to cause these warnings to be generated? No urgency here, since
I
saved my old 2.2 kernel, and can boot from it from LILO.

Now the buggaboo. When I initially installed RH 7.0, I used the
"expert
text" function, and provided a device driver disk for my Promise
FasTrak IDE
RAID controller card, which was successfully recognized as /dev/sda
under
2.2. When I compiled 2.4.2, I didn't see any option for providing a
driver
disk, and when I boot up under 2.4.2, it doesn't recognize the RAID
card, so
of course the MOUNT of /dev/sda fails. This is no big deal, since
linux is
installed on a different (non-RAIDed) hard drive, so all this means is
that
I can't mount my Windows partition after I've booted. What I suspect
happened is that when I originally loaded 2.2, the functionality for
the
RAID card was loaded into the kernel via my driver disk. Since I
didn't do
anything like that when I compiled 2.4.2, the support obviously isn't
there.
How do I add the device support for the RAID card into the 2.4.2
kernel? I
would prefer to add the support into the kernel directly, rather than
as a
loadable module, since I spend a LOT of time in the windows partition.
Here is a listing of the files and filesizes (in bytes) on the
RAID
controller driver disk:

PCITABLE 0
MODULES.CGZ 361,642
MODULES.DEP 0
MODINFO 76
README .TXT 2,728
RHDD-6 1 3

I tried to "gunzip" modules.cgz, but had to change the name to
"modules.gz"
first, because gunzip didn't recognize the .cgz extension. After I
did
that, it unzipped to a file called "modules.cpio" of about 750,000
bytes, if
that helps matters any. I tried to "pico" the modules.cpio file, but
it's
either garbage or a binary.

The README.TXT file only gives the instructions for using the driver
disk in
conjunction with the "Expert text" function as part of an initial RH
install, nothing about using it when you compile a new kernel.
MODINFO just
identifies the module as the Promise FasTrak RAID driver, along with
version
and build number. As you can tell from the filesizes, the other files
don't
have much of anything in them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I think I may need to find a
"dumber
book" than "Running Linux" until I really get a grasp on things. On
the
other hand, since I just installed linux a few days ago, and just got
the
books yesterday, I'm happy with the progress I'm making (compiled and
booted
from a new kernel, learned how to edit LILO, mount devices, configure
a
printer under KDE, etc..) Learning this is almost as much fun as when
I got
my first computer!
