I am planning on buying that laptop. Any comments? I saw in
http://www.redhat.com that the Xircom Ethernet adapter that Dell is
offering is NOT compatible with Red Hat.

Thanks,

Fourth attempt in two years on two machines to load linux (redhat)

I still can't get x windows to work. But it's better.

I can start gnome and it comes up with a pretty screen, but my mouse and

during setup I was able to choose ATI RAGE 128 and my monitor but when the
graphic screen came on, I got a pretty picture, but no mouse or keyboard.

Ok. I guess the HOWTO's would be a good place to go, as someone else
already mentioned. Maybe a good book would be helpful. If you are
using
RedHat, maybe something like "Red Hat Linux 6.X fast & easy" would help
you initially. It shows you things graphically, with lots of images and
step-by-step procedures. Really easy to follow.

Of course, it doesn't go to advanced stuff, but I like its style and the
way it shows things for newcomers. After that, your next step might be
an advanced book on Network setup on Linux.

Hope this helps,

Carlos

Subject: setuid problem?
Date: Tue, 26 Sep 2000 19:55:27 -0700

I have installed StarOffice 5.1 (which is terrific software, by the way) but
can only run it when logged in as root. The privileges on 'soffice' are set
to provide execute privileges to everyone, but nothing happens when I click
on the icon if I am not root.

I have found a similar result when I try to run the 'pppon' file (which I
wrote as root, per the excellent Unruh HOWTO and also gives everyone execute
privilege.). It calls pppd. When it does, the non-root user gets the error
message, "pppd is not setuid=root". There are man pages for setuid and its
friend getuid, but I don't see either command on my system anywhere (Red Hat
6.2), not even with find.

What is the problem? Should my system have setuid and getuid on it? Is the
lack of them the problem or is it something else? Is my inability to run
StarOffice the same problem as my inability to run pppd? How do I fix this?

You can buy SSH from SSH Communications (www.ssh.com). It works really well,
is point and click, easy to install, and well worth the money. Just to let you
know, I don't work there, I'm just a user.

You must follow it line by line and exactly and omit nothing. The article

Is your speed too fast for CD-RW?
I have a 4x2x24 CD Writer.
When I write onto CD-RW using the xcdroast, I set the speed to 2 x
When I write onto CD-R using the xcdroast, I set the speed to 4 x

Check the modem configuration. Be sure you're set for hardware flow
control (USR defaults to NO flow control, so you want to load the
factory hardware flow control config and save it to the NVRAM). Set the
S2 register to 128 to turn off the "+++" escape sequence.

Comment out the WAITFOR and CONNECT lines. The modem will raise CD
(Carrier Detect) to signal an incomming call. Also change INIT to ATZ\r
OK ATS0=1\r OK. This will reset the USR between calls, but watch the Y
(should be Y0) setting to be sure it loads the NVRAM settings and not
the factory defaults.

Good luck.

"setuid" is a state of being, not a command. You can turn on the "setuid
bit" on an executable by running "chmod u+s /path/to/executable" (as the
owner of the executable). You can see whether it's set by running "ls -l
/path/to/executable". If the fourth character is "x", the file is a
_non_-suid executable, and if it's an "s", the file is a setuid executable.

> Is my inability to run
> StarOffice the same problem as my inability to run pppd? How do I fix this?

I hope not. It would invite security problems to run a whole office suite
(or any huge program) with the permissions of root.

Your guru is wacked, I have a 17.2G and a 20.4G drives. Win98 is on first
7.5G of the 17.2 Mandrake 7.02 is on the rest including 3 RAID 0 striped
partitions (/, /home, /usr) /var on one disk, /tmp on the other, with a swap
partition on each and a 9G partition at the end of the 20.4G for stuff (mp3's,
backup images to burn to CDR/RW). BTW RAID is fast, very fast, with a
K6-III/450 128MB, netscape opens in 3 seconds!

Subject: AUGH!! Mandrake 7.1 Installation Errors (partitions)
Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 05:08:41 GMT

I'm trying to install Linux-Mandrake 7.1 from Windows98 using lnx4win.
On a HP Pavilion N3250 laptop. I'm running in Expert/Developer mode.
Everything goes fine up until setting up the partitions.

It asks for the Root and Swap sizes. I go with 3GB for root and 65MB
for swap (default size). I have a 6 GB harddrive, 2GB used by
Windows98.

Then it asks which ones do I want to format:

   * /mnt/windows/lnx4win/linuxsys.img
   * /mnt/windows/lnx4win/swap

I select both to be formated and then I get this error:

           An error occurred
   failed to create loopback file

I hit OK. I get the window with the partitions laid out. There are two
tabs: hda and loopback. I select the loopback tab and there are to
segments, a red one for root (/) and a yellow one for swap. I click on
the root and click format. I now get this error:

An error ext2 formatting of /mnt/windows/linx4win/linuxsys.img
failed.

I hit OK and then this comes up:

You don't have any room for lnx4win

So I click on the swap and click format and it the proceeds to format
it just fine.

So I try to format the root again and now I get this error:

ext2 formatting of /mnt/windows/lnx4win/linuxsys.img failed at
/usr/bin/perl-install/fs.pm line 85

I then get this error:

failed to create loopback file at /usr/bin/perl-install/loopback.pm
line 70

Now, what the hell is going on here? Why can it format the swap but
not the root? I have enough disk space. I have around 1GB left between
Windows and Linux. I checked the m5sum of the cd image and it matches
correctly. What is the problem? What can I do to fix this? Please
help, this is sooooo frustrating!!

Thanx
Brandon

==============87A77F95C6F4D2FD4D9496B4

I've been struggling with this ftp login failure problem for
a month and still no clue. Here is the symptom: I login
as a regular user with login password and always get the
following

Connected to host.domain
220 host.domain FTP server (Version wu-2.5.0(1) Tue Sep 21 16:48:12 EDT
1999) ready.
Name (host:me): me
331 Password required for me.
Password:
530 Login incorrect.
Login failed.
ftp> quit

I thought the problem might be because /etc/shadow was missing
in my initial installation of RedHat 6.1 and ftpd (or in.ftpd)
needs to check this file, so I created /etc/shadow using pwconv.
It didn't solve the problem. Then I checked /dev/tty, the mode
is 666, fine. In /var/log/message and secure, it logged
ftpd[_number_]: cmd failed, nothing more than that. So I am
speculating that ftpd somehow failed to get the password
correct for any given user. What else could possibly be wrong?

Thanks.
