My problem happens even if linux is not installed. All I need is to have
partitions formatted in ext2, even if they are empty !

Yes. To provide exact information about the partition tables, get
Findpart at my page, do
findpart tables fp.txt
and post the content from fp.txt.

Subject: X configuration blues
Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 11:40:29 -0500
I am facing a strange problem with my X configuration. I have a SiS-5598
video card with 4 MB of VRAM. The problem is that the probe on the card
returns a default setting of 1024x768 16 bits, but when I use this the
screen has a lot of disturbance. If I use a resolution any lesser than
1024x768 most of the windows dont fit into the desktop and if I use a 8 bit
color palette, applications like acrobat reader and real player dont
function properly.
Any suggestions on this? Is the VRAM not enough or is it a problem with the
video card?
Thanks,
Vinay

Hi
looks like X has probably not been installed properly or not at all.
type xf86config in console to get the Xsetup, or try whatever utility
RedHat uses for Xconfiguration.
Good luck, Jamie

I assume you mean a few seconds? Anyway, even if it were a few minutes
(which it clearly isn't), I was more curious about security/stability issues
than performance issues. My new Duron 650 with 128MB of PC 133 memory is so
much faster than my Pentium-133 with 32MB of SIMM memory, it can't help but
seem fast!
Thanks for the input John and Lonni.

When you are doing the setserial thing, try setting the modem to a
non-standard IRQ (mine is on 11, *grin*). It should clear up the
conflict.
good luck

Yup, Tweakui worked for me (Win2K) and it takes about 3 seconds. It also
lets you hide Windows partitions if you want (like I hide my C: which has
only my bootloader and associated info that I don't want to accidentally
muck with).

Yeah, primary. A little hazy on the terminology. I meant the 4 that are in
the actually partition table rather than referenced with a point I suppose
with actual info being somewhere else.... er that's probably more confusing
than the original post. Well, whether you understand me or not, I

There should be a file in /etc that contains a table to
convert usernames to e-mail addresses for outgoing mail (the relevant
line in mine reads 'rt : [EMAIL PROTECTED]' and works fine). My
mail transport agent Exim uses /etc/email-addresses but it might be
different with Sendmail.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have a SiteCom PCMCIA 10/100 ethernet card on my TravelMate 4000M.
I have contacted SiteCom in the Netherlands, but get no reply so am
unable to find out what ethernet chip it is using. There is seemingly no
information in the manual or on the card itself.
It has a Redhat 6.0 driver and has a module called lna100.o but I am
running SuSE6.3. I have tried to use the module, but I get no reports on
the detection taking place and if I try an INSMOD, it reports it cannot
find the module. If I do an IFCONGIG I see no eth0.
Has anyone got any idea what chip/driver would be on this SiteCom card
or any pointers to move forward with this. I have to option to return it
if I cannot get it working and only have 10 days left!
Thanks

Subject: Newbie: Insall failure signal 11
Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 17:36:23 GMT
Have a number of distros around the house, including RH 6.1 CD from the
RedHat for Dummies
manual. Installed same on my wife's box, obliterating her windows (put
me in the doghouse for
a while)--- now I've decided to install on my new AT clone:
ABIT BE6-II mainboard
Pentium III 500 Mhz, slot one
128 MB SDRAM
Video Diamond Stealth III S540
Nec CD Rom , off Adaptex 2940 UW-Pro, as
in my UMAX 610S scanner
Problem is, now my attempts to install on the new box result in one of
two failures:
Depending whether I'm trying to install off the CD or off the boot disk,
either I
get a failure to find RH-Linux on the CD (I've checked with dos and
explorer,
so I know its there) OR, I get a message to the effect that Signal 11
has been
received and the install exited abnormally, at which point all files are
unmounted,
etc. and a manual reboot forced, just like "shutdown - h now"
I guess I'll install either the Caldera Openlinux, Turbolinux, Gentus
Linux (came with
the mainboard), or RH 5.0, all of which I already have.
Any ideas what signal 11 is and whether it is a fatal flaw in the
install process? Of the
remaining distros, which is probaly the best to use? I intend to use
Gnome and "e"
(Enlightenment).
TIA,
Art

its most likely a problem with the version of X you're using. Unless
its 3.3.6, you need to upgrade.

Check if the CD is installed correctly. For example, check if
the jumpers which describe master/slave/alone are set correctly
on the CD and on the other disk if exists.

Good thinking, but been there and done that. The CD is not an ATAPI or EIDE
drive, but SCSI-2 (as I said, off the Adaptec 2940 UW-Pro). There are no
jumpers to be set. It is device 3, and the scanner device 5. It works fine
with
Windows 98 and boot messages are OK. As matter of fact, during the Linux
install, the RPM package finds the Adptex and loads the 78XX driver for
same.
Tried the Gentus distro that came with the Motherboard. Turns out it is
also
using RedHat and RPM. Same Signal 11 message and aborted install. This is
getting frustrating! <G>

At the risk of being personal, may I ask your nationality? It

I am of Hungarian ancestry, but "William" in Magyar is

It sounds like a partition problem to me too, I've always used
whatever partition tool is included with the distribution to

Well thanks again...but I think I have some other problem. I renamed the
resolv.conf file to resolv.conf.bak, rebooted (what the heck), and there was no
difference (note my 'connection closed' message only takes about 5 seconds vs
your couple minutes). There are 3 nameservers in that file, all of which seem
to be known by the network as DNS servers...makes sense to me. I can FTP from
the linux box, so I suspect the linux box is known to the network...plus I am

The hosts.allow and hosts.deny are empty.

No Lilo is a bootloader if you choose not useit you should use a boot flop.
If your system doen not boot I think the most simple way to get it up and
running is to start from boot flop or CD and choose to rescue the system.
otherwise just reinstall the OS (good practice)
Have fun

Hi'ya.
Had a similar problem with Diamond StealthII G460 just recently.
My problem was smoothly solved by upgrading to the newest X windows version.
You may have a driver problem, too, so start with upgrading to Xfree86 4.0
(RH6.2
installs Xfree 3.3.6 or somethin').
If that one won't help try commenting out all of your "Screens" but your
chosen one,
in which you make sure no virtual screens are put.
Hope it helps.

Subject: My Linux box won't power down itself...
Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 21:19:32 +0200
Hi.
Recently I've compiled myself the 2.2.17 Kernel on my RedHat6.2 machine and
ended up
with a fine-working box but the shutdown process which now ask me to
manually power down the machine after shutting down its processes.
The process was always automatic before, of course.
Any suggestions ?
Thx,
~~Ohad.

Yo.
ya should find your XF86Config file (usually put inside /etc/X11) and poke
inside, after reading some Xfree86 help files which would no doubt give you
the basic understanding of how things are handled inside it.
OR, u can use one of the automatic configuring tools Xfree86 have.
look for either "Xconfigurator" or "XF86Setup" or "xf86config".
Hope it helps.
