after 4 weeks of installation, the SuSE support told me that the
current SuSE Linux 7.0 version does not support my graphics card (ELSA
Gladiac). On their website, they say the opposite
(http://www.suse.de/de/produkte/susesoft/linux/neuheiten.html).
EIther the support team doesn't feel like helping me anymore or they
announcements of supported hardware is simply wrong. :-(

I had the same problem with the RedHat 7.0 iso image. Upon further
investigation, I found that I could mount the burned cd on an existing
linux box, the directory structure appeared correct, but many of the
files (including ALL of the rpms) appeared to be unreadable. I thought
that there was a problem in downloading or burning the cd, but now I'm
not sure. I downloaded the images several times, and I couldn't get the
md5 checksums to match those provided by RedHat. Could there be a
problem with the images themselves?

-k, --keep
(Keyword: keep) Keep retrieved messages on the
remote mailserver. Normally, messages are deleted
from the folder on the mailserver after they have
been retrieved. Specifying the keep option causes
retrieved messages to remain in your folder on the
mailserver. This option does not work with ETRN.

Check the files /etc/hosts.allow and hosts.deny.
Because the long delay for a local ftp check
/etc/resolv.conf
(looks like there is a Nameserver which is not responding(for internet?))

A HardDisk has a partitioning table with for 4 normal partitions. If you
want more than 4 partitions, you have to create extended partitions.
I assume all your 4 partitions are 'normal' ones, so there is no way to
point the partitioning table to the empty 12GB.
remove one of the existing partitions and recreate a 14GB one, and after
that you can split this into several extended partitions.
Well, this is the basic story. I am also pretty new to this stuff, I
probably mess up with the terminology, and you should definitely check
things out before you believe all this, but I hope it points you in the
right direction.
Point is, Linux is not Windows, so you better know what you are doing
;-).

If it's not compatible with the OS you want then don't buy it, I would

Did you check the md5sum on the image and on the burned CDROM against
the results in the md5sum file that should have come with the source?

There's another thread going on here about problems upgrading to RedHat
7.0 with CDs burned from the .iso images provided by RedHat. I've
experienced this problem too. I have been unable to get the md5
checksum on my downloaded image to match the values given by RedHat in
the accompanying MD5SUM file. If I mount the iso image via the loopback
device, the directory structure appears OK, but some (not all) of the
text files are garbage, and NONE of the rpms are recognized as valid rpm
files.
So I was wondering: Could anyone confirm that you have in fact been
able to download the CD image files, burn them to a CD, and successfully
install/upgrade RedHat 7.0?
Thanks in advance,

Subject: Can I install Linux (COL) into a Logical partition?

Basically what I want to know is: if I use DOS fdisk to create an extended
partition, and then create 2 logical drives inside it, can I then install Linux
(/ and swap) into them? If so how would I format the logical drives for
installation.
As another point, can the LILO reside in an extended partition? I'm using XOSL
(from www.XOSL.org) as a boot loader, but it needs to be pointed at LILO to
boot into Linux.
TIA for all help.

Look in /etc/fstab to see that the lines for the windoz partitions end

If it is a "src.rpm" it is installed into "/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES".
You might try "whereis make" to see where is is located.

pardon me but instead of having all that mumbo jumbo in your rc.local file,
this is what I did. made a separate file called it FW, did a chmod 700 fw to
make it executable, then put a symlink in the rc3.d like the rest and then I
have the little boot up scenario with the green [ok] after it loads, sorry
but I like things clean.....

Subject: cable modem lost connection hangs programs.
Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 15:47:32 GMT
My cable modem keeps losing its connection with the ISP (@HOME) and
someone is coming out to fix it. However, when the modem is down, many
programs take *FOREVER* to load up. Emacs and pico come to mind as well
as exmh. It seems that (and I could be wrong here) these programs are
trying to find something from eth0 first before loading up. For
instance, when emacs comes up, the title bar reads
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]". What is actually going on here?
Is there a way to get these programs to load up without checking eth0
(as I'm assuming it does). If I didn't have an ethernet connection (in
the old days), I assumed that, if anything, it would have been lo that
would have been accessed. Is there a way to configure the box to use
this rather than eth0 by default?
I'm really talking out of my ass here as I have no idea what these
programs are doing, other than that they take forever to come up when
the eth0 is broken. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Andrew

Subject: kernel upgrade how to?
Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 15:35:37 GMT
I was trying to install redhat6.2 on my machine. unfortunately :-) I
found
that my chipset was not supported (intel i810) Seems I have to download
the latest kernel and upgrade. I have the following questions
1. My processor is an Intel Celeron 466 MHZ. So which "platform
specific"
kernel do I download ? I mean 2.2.16 for i386 or the one for i586?
2. I gather that this file is an rpm . So after downloading it (from
windows and mounting the windows drive,) which linux directory do I copy
the file to?
3. Now assuming I have the right kernel in the right directory, what do
I
do next? recompile the kernel? If so can you please type in the commands
I
am supposed to use?
Thanks,
Sriram

I had the same problem some time ago. But if you install TweakUI
included in the powertoys you can download from Microsoft, you can
turn off any drive letters. This way I made my drive E: disappear.
