Once you get SSI set up and working in your apache conf:
I don't think you can pass parameters like that except with a Netscape
webserver (not referring to the browser). Also I am not sure if #exec
cmd= works when apache is running suexec, although, it may as long as the
CGI is in the same directory or lower than SSI page. But to pass
parameters (in a query string) you should be using #include virtual=
Look up the apache docs for 'mod_include'.

That means that your box is running the 2.2.14 Linux kernel. Your system
may tell you which Debian version (it thinks that) it is at the login
prompt.

This is true. The apt system takes a bit of preparation work, but it is
supposed to take care of dependencies automagically.

Ah, good. (You might find that xntp [version 3] behaves a little
differently from ntp [the successor, version 4].)

It sounds like a strange bug to me. (Do you have the latest "slink"

For a monitor chose LCD 1024x768 or whatever resolution your screen is. I
tried a generic monitor before I discovered that one, but then I could not
change resolutions. With the LCD monitor I can change resolutions, but
use 1024x768 by default. I wouldn't know about your video adapter though

Hello,
I don't know if this is the problem but Linux may not be able to handle
drives larger than the 12Gb that you are able use. As with some other OS
designs, you may require special software to extend Linux's capability.
There is definitely an upper limit on the amount of memory Linux can 'see',
i.e. approx. 2Gb ( and half of that needs to be swap) and file sizes are
limited to ~ 2Gb. One straight forward solution that I think should work is
to repartition your drive into 3 separate partitions, with two partitions
of 12Gb apiece and a slightly smaller partition of 8 Gb. You could mount
/usr and /home separately as these are more likely to run out of quota
before anything else. Presumably your systems m/board and BIOS is fairly
new and capable of recognising very large disk drives. Of course, unless you
need 20 or 30Gb of disk storage for large scale multimedia work etc, you
could use extra partitions for another Linux installation, maybe another
distribution or a system purely for experimental whims!

Subject: pcmcia ethernet setup HELP! plz!!!
Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2000 12:57:49 -0700
Okay, here is the story...I have a Linksys FastEthernet PCMCIA card for my
Quantex laptop. When I install Mandrake 7.1, I get to the networking part
of the setup and it says...
"Do you want to configure a network"
I answer yes and then a list comes up, asking me to choose a network card.
On that list, I do not see my network card so I have to press cancel and
then answer no to configuring a network. Once I boot, I see the lights on
my ethernet card connector lighting up, all three and when I go to the
Labtop settings under PCMCIA I see my ethernet card name listed. However,
when I type
lsmod
in the console I only see
lo (and all this other stuff about the loopback)
but I don't see
eth0
So, my question is simple...how do I activate that network card? It seems
as though it is there but just not activated because of the cancelation I
had to do during setup. By the way, this same card is working when I
install Ret Hat Linux 6.2 and all previous version, so I don't see why it
wouldn't work.
Thanks!

Searching USENET for the string "unresolved symbol request_module" show

Okay, right now I am learning linux, so I have nothing on my computer that I
care about...so, if I complete fry everything...I will just reinstall...with
that said...
I am practicing learning the techniques required to use Linux. As an
example, I wanted to install the updated PCMCIA package. So, I downloaded
the tarball pcmcia-cs-3.1.20.tar.gz, I right clicked and open archiver and I
extracted it to /usr/src/ so now I have a folder /usr/src/pcmcia-cs-3.1.20
Note that I am logged in as root. So, following the HOW-TO I type
make config
and I get a few lines about PCMCIA ending in
most default answers are okay
file source kernel (../usr/src/linux):
So, I hit enter and it says "see headers for kernel but not the source", so
I type a bunch of other paths without luck. What the heck am I supposed to
put in this prompt? When do I type "make all" and then "make install" like
the HOW-TO says. Obviously it needs to find the kernel first. What am I
doing wrong?
Please help!

In fact, none of these things is correct. More correct statements
would be:
- Linux cannot boot from drive space not supported by the BIOS.
Larger disks than the BIOS can handle can still be supported via
creative partitioning; it's often advisable to make a small first
partition located at /boot, where all the bootstrap files end up.
These are the files which the BIOS is used to read at boot time.
Linux itself (ie, everything after that little LILO message) will
typically have no trouble with any IDE disk size.
- Various methods for using memory beyond 2G exist for x86 boxen.
Native 64 bit platforms (ie Alpha) do not have this restriction at
all.
- Swap size is entirely an administrative decision. Linux will
operate properly with zero swap in many configurations. No
particular multiple of memory size is required.
- File sizes are limited to 2G by the Unix API, which involves a 32
bit signed number for file position. The filesystem itself has no
problems, and the API extensions necessary to eliminate this
problem are well specified and available; shortly they will be
standard (in glibc 2.2, I understand). As usual, 64 bit systems do
not suffer from this problem at all. Some simple big file problems
can be worked around with the creative use of pipes and the `split'
command.

Okay, I am following the HOW-TOs, but it just doesn't seem to work. I go to

make xconfig #doesn't work
make menuconfig #doesn't work
make config #doesn't work
How the heck do you configure the kernel. I read the HOW-TO exactly and it
didn't work. Perhaps you can only configure the kernel if the kernel is
still in source code form. In that case, fresh off an install, how do you
configure the kernel.
These questions I am asking seem to be pretty fundamental and it would be
great if you guys could help me out.

If you created a FAT32 Extended partition (type "b" , IIRC) using
Linux' "fdisk", then sometimes this will
do strange things with the partition table, rendering it partially
unusable for Win9* (well, that alone doesn't say much, given the
doubtable usability of Win9* as a whole).

A) The adapter alone will not make this work. PS/2 and serial mice
use completely different protocols, and whether or not your mouse
will support both of them is unknown. Most mice do not; the more
expensive ones (LogiTech etc.) usually do.
B) If you're really using tty0, then you're barfing up the wrong
tree. The serial ports are called ttyS0 or ttyS1 (aka COM1 or COM2).

it can't find the CD. Redhat 6.2 never had a problem with the CD. I even
tried booting off the CD and it gave the same problem. The boot image was

well, i'm going to try :-)
1. download the source: linux-2.2.17.tar.gz
2. copy it to /usr/src
3. cd /usr/src
4. tar -zxvf linux-2.2.17.tar.gz
5. cd linux
6. make xconfig (if you're in X, otherwise 'make menuconfig')
7. configure kernel, save settings
8. type 'make dep', 'make bzImage', 'make modules', 'make modules_install'
9. cp the /usr/src/linux/somewhere/i386/boot/bzImage to /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.17
(also copy 'system.map' to the boot directory, the 'system.map' is somewhere
in /usr/src/linux)
10. edit /etc/lilo.conf (more info: 'man lilo' and 'man lilo.conf')
11. execute /sbin/lilo
12. reboot the system
Do all actions being root. I think your problem is dat not all development
stuff is installed, so maybe you can first give us the errors you see on
your screen (but if you did a standard install, I think it should be okay)
HTH!

just download the linux kernel source (the kernel version you are using at
that moment!) and unpack it into /usr/src/linux; it will both contain the
source and the headers (ehm.. the headers are part of the source, needed
for other apps to compile).
Keep on trying, you're on the right way!!!! (most important is reading..)

Subject: simple question
Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2000 13:48:39 -0700
When it says how to configure my ethernet card in the HOW-TO it says,
install pcmcia card services
enable networking
recompile the kernel
I got the instructions for the first one. How in the world do you enable
networking and before I go to do it, how do I check if it is enabled? I am
having problems with my Linksys ethernet card being recongnized as eth0 and
it does not show up when I type lsmod, so I figured if I followed the three
steps above it should work.
Help me to do this? Thanks!

Subject: rpm: wu-ftpd - where to get?
Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2000 15:43:57 -0500
RH 6.2.
Alright, apparently my problem is that the wu-ftp package is not
installed:
'rpm -qa | grep ftp' returns:
ftp-0.15-1
ncftp-3.0beta19-2
tftp-0.15-1
...no wu-ftp package. I can FTP out, but not in to the linux box.
So I went to RedHat to download the rpm,
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/redhat-6.2/i386/RedHat/SRPMS/SRPMS/wu-ftpd-2.6.0-3.src.rpm
...and I'm prompted with a user id and passwd...anonymous doesn't
work...is there some other trick? Do they want $$$?
Where can I get this rpm? or any other rpm I may need?
Thanks,
Jeff
