(New user, eh? Hope you check the HOWTOs first --
http://www.linuxdoc.org
you'll want to be VERY sure that your hardware, for instance,
is compatible, especially a modem if you use one (in case you
need to go for help ;-)... and have your hardware manuals
with you, in particular whatever goes with your monitor and
video card in case you need to input settings.)
Both have their good points, of course. You don't mention
any particular needs (like peculiar hardware, or types of
software that you want to run) so I'll deal solely in
generalities.
You don't mention whether you'll be getting boxed versions or
no. SuSE, for instance, in its boxed version came with
pretty decent manuals (at least in 6.2, dunno about 7). It
also comes with the kitchen sink in terms of provided
software. OTOH, don't forget to check their site for
updates...
I believe they usually also provide a 1 CD 'evaluation'
version in addition to the entire thing, but that might not be
available yet.
Red Hat has a bit of an advantage in that it seems more people
use it, and thus more 3rd-party packages are pre-built for it
(SuSE also uses RPMs, but RHAT RPMs may be of a newer format,
and there may be differences in where files are placed or how
they are set up). This also means that more folks here, most
likely, will be familiar with a typical RHAT setyp and able
to answer your Q's. I've not used RHAT since 5.2 or so, and
thus can't comment in detail on recent versions.
Evaluation versions of both should be available cheaply, but
w/o paper manuals (check their sites if you want to see
whether you can DL manuals) or installation support (never
used it, so can't comment on quality).
FWIW, I believe 32bitsonline.com had a review of SuSE 7. I
don't see a review of the latest RHAT yet, but it's just been
a short while. I've also read good things 'bout Mandrake in
terms of usefulness to new users, but haven't used a MDK
system yet.

I've downloaded that HOWTO on my system some time ago. I've read it many
times but as far as I can see it is only intended for RAID1/4/5 not for
RAID0. There's an appendix explaining how to use initrd to boot a
non-RAID0 partition and then switch the root partition using the
command:
echo >0x902>/proc/sys/kernel/real-root/dev
unfortunately on my SuSE distro that file under /proc doesn't exist so I
don't know how to change root.

PPP Client (works great with GUI rp3) but how about the command line???
I setup my diel out access with RP3 and it works great. but the down
side is that I am trying to setup a shell script that will do the
following
1) Run top and save the output to a file
2) Dail out to my ISP
3) email me the output of top
4) Logout from ISP
How can I get the RP3 to dail out without the GUI???

Hi all,
There is a line in /etc/inittab which traps the CTRL-ALT-DELETE signal
and indicates what to do then. For example, in my system:
# Trap CTRL-ALT-DELETE
ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t5 -r now
Here, '-t5' indicates to wait 5 seconds between sending processes the
warning and the kill signal, before rebooting.
The problem is that my system doesn't wait the 5 seconds when I press
CTRL-ALT-DELETE if there is no interactive session started (e.g., when
no one is logged-in into the system).
How can I make the system to wait the x seconds ALWAYS?
Note: The box is a Linux-Red-Hat-5.2
Thanks,

You proably have to turn on the daemons for samba and apache. To do that,
execute (as root) the command: ntsysv. This will give you a list of
"services". Make sure that smb and httpd are both turned on. You can toggle
a service on or off with the space bar. Tab to the 'OK' button and hit
enter. Then reboot.
Good luck.

Paul,
Thanks for the information.
uname -r returns 2.2.14 so I guess I am running Debian 2.2.14.
Using dpkg because the book I have on Debian had a good explanation on
how to use it and suggested for small updates or installs it was
sufficient. I am just getting familiar with Linux and am trying to keep
things simple.
Downloaded the older version of xntpd and it installed without any
problems and appears to be working fine.
Just an note, I did try installing both packages at the same time and
ended up with errors on both - similar to the original ones with just
attempting to do ldso.
Thanks again for your response.

Usually the ppp interace is started by an 'ifup ppp0' command. From the
command line, try that. If it works, write a script and make it a cron
job.

Get the redhat 7.0 distro. It installed well for me. The upgrade took
about half and hour for all the packages. I tried Mandrake long ago and
the two hour install was brutal. Plus, with Redhat you'll be able to
recompile most everything from the src rpms. To help things, a
precompiled i686 glibc package is included.

Subject: Re: cable modem lost connection hangs programs.

It appears that emacs is trying to do a reverse lookup on the your ip
address. It's looking for something in your /etc/hosts file for a line
containing your ip address and hostname, essentially:
127.0.0.1 localhost
24.150.5.61 co723987-a.kico1.on.home.com
If your ip address is fairly static, you can add the line above and it
should load up regardless if you have a connection. Beware, that if you
boot and *don't* get an ip address, eth0 should fail initialization and
default to the localhost. Likewise, if your ip address changes fairly
often you may have to write a script to modify your /etc/hosts file on
bootup.

I recognize this. Same problems. Same tryouts, same results. I choosed
to let PnP disabled. Also under Win95: ISA, no irq, only an I/O address.
I use my 3c509b to connect to my cable-internet provider and this
happens to go well (both win95 & Mandrake 7.1 Linux). I have an (but how
to prove ?) idea that the card functioned somewhat better under PnP
(fewer hickups of that awesome Netscape), but indeed no Linux then.
If you use your card to connect to a network, I have no answer for you.

I hear that the apache configuration of linuxconf in RH 6.2 is broken and
produces the result you see below. I do not have details, but I think
it is due to an invalid <Files> section or missing </Files> tag. Someone
with 6.2 could probably clear this up. It is easy enough to edit the
apache conf files directory anyway (/etc/httpd/conf?). The remember to
restart apache or do a 'killall -HUP httpd' and check the error logs.

I never saw the first post, or any replies to it, here, so I thought that I
mustn't have sent it properly. Sorry about the time you spent over it. I've
already sorted out the problem I had thanks to an informative response to the
post, by the way.

Subject: Re: Best way to Partition my harddisk

Patrick,
I have basically the config you want, minus Win98. Basically I have a small
primary partition to boot from, using NTLDR, then on a large extended
partition I have the following logical partitions: Win2K on a big partition,
another big one with a FAT-32 "data" partition so both Linux and Win can
read files, and ext2 and a Linux swap partition. In your case, you could
put Win98 on the FAT-32 partition. If you want primary partitions, you can
have one for your boot part, one for each OS, and you Linux part would then
be the extended partition, with a logical for the swap and one for the ext2.
Anyway, all you need to do is use FDISK and create a 10MB partition to boot
from. Leave the rest of the space unpartitioned. Then throw in the Win2K
disk and follow the prompts. It will take care of putting the boot stuff on
C: and everything else on E: This is really easy and is essentially
automatic.
During the Win2K install you can create additional partitions just by
following prompts. Of course, leave the space that you ultimately want to
use for Linux unpartitioned.
Figure out Win98 on your own since I don't know anything about this.
Install Linux to the unpartitioned space. At least with Caldera OL 2.4,
just follow the prompts to create your ext2 and swap partitions.
Now, boot into Linux and do a dd to get your bootsector. Check the syntax
of this, but I think what you want is (for hdaX susbstitute the name of your
Linux partition, probably hda5 or hda8 in your case):
dd if=/dev/hdaX of=bootsect.su7 bs=512 count=1 /* CHECK THE MAN PAGE FOR
SYNTAX*/
This takes hdaX as input, gets the first sector (count=1) and the first 512
bytes (bs=512) and writes it to bootsect.su7 (the name is arbitrary).
Copy bootsect.lnx to your boot partition.
Boot into Win2K and open up boot.ini (probably hidden, so make sure you can
see hidden files). Add a line like:
C:\bootsect.su7="SuSE Linux 7"
Does this help? There are lots of places on the net that have this info
perhaps more clearly explained, but... but this isn't one of them :-o
Oh yeah, definitely download and install TweakUI for Win2K (available from
Microsoft). Otherwise Win2K will "see" you Linux partitions but will not
recognize them. A pain in the butt. TweakUI lets you hide partitions in
Win2K

Subject: Install from ZipDisk
Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2000 19:49:08 +0100
Dear All!
Any comments on the feasibility of the following:
I have a 486 laptop with 20 Mb RAM and 200 Mb harddrive.
I have access to an external ZipDisk or could purchase a LAN card for the
machine.
Currently running Win 3.1
Proposal:
Wipe the machine and install one of the Linux Distributions (preferably
Linux 2.2 as that is what our webserver runs).
No graphic interface (memory restriction I have been told). Still if it
can handle Win 3.1 & all the office stuff . . .
I would really like to use it for command line work and MySQL development.
As there is no CD-rom, could I load the Linux installation files onto a
zip disk and install it that way?
What site has the best instructions for setting up such a system?
Thanks!!!
T.Bolt
