Here is what I did in this situation, you are on the right track.
I first tried the card under linux and eth0 would hang. It was an
interrupt problem.
First I ran the 3c5x9cfg.exe program from 3com (after I created a dos
boot disk from my windows 98 machine by going to the dos prompt and
typing format a: /s).
I was able to see what interrupt the 3c509 wanted to use, IRQ 10 in my
case. I then booted my computer and hit the delete key to go into the
bios setup. In there I have a section to set interrupts and I set IRQ
10 to ISA. I then saved the settings, exited, booted up and things were
fine.
Hope this helps,
Chip

Hi
I just installed XFree86 4.0.1 on a mixed RedHat 6.2/7.0 system (I'm doing
an upgrade by hand).
I notice, that XFree86 3.3.6 used about 10Mb of memory. Now I see, that
4.0.1 uses 27Mb!!!
They are running with the same config (as far as possible), and no modules
except extmod are loaded in 4.0.1. Why this apparently excessive memory
use? have I done something wrong in the setup?
Or does 4.0.1 just consume such a huge amount of memory?

Use the boot floppy, you created during the installation of RH6.1
At the lilo prompt get into the single user mode and reinstall lilo and
when you reboot hopefully lilo will work.
lilo: linux single
bash# lilo
bash# # fix up you network card stuff here.
bash# reboot

You don't want that one anyway, its exploitable. You want
wu-ftpd-2.6.1.tgz which is available. And despite some of the publicity
surrounding that 2.6.0 version, redhat has not deemed it a requirement
to put the rpm on their site that I could find today. There is a link
to a wu-ftpd-2.6.1.i386.rpm leading into ftp.linux.com, but after
several hours of being rejected as all 750 ftp lines were in use, I gave
up and built the tgz. It seems to work ok so far.

For each user, the login shell is specified at the end of line. So it's
unlikely that this is the cause. The authentication fails at some point
which I don't where and how.

Someone told me about alogin to allow for
automatic login.
This instructs you to modify the /etc/inittab as follows:
change
1;2345 respawn:/sbin/mingetty ttty1
to
1;2345 respawn:/sbin/mingetty ttty1 /bin/alogin
When I do, I get an error on bootup which says that the
system is respawning too fast and shutting it down for 5
minutes.
Any clue? The docs for alogin only talk about agetty, or
mgetty, but not mingetty.

I've been trying without success to get my Aureal AudioPCI sound card
working under Linux for a couple of months. I've tried all of the
versions of the drivers provided by linux.aureal.com, but none have
worked. When I install the drivers, they compile correctly and the
modules are installed, and XMMS ceases to complain that the sound card is
incorrectly configured. However, I can't get any sound at all, in any
program. I've noticed one weird thing:
My CDROM drive has a "Play" button on the front. Under Windoze, this
button will play a music CD through the sound card without any software
intervention. However, this does not work under Linux with the aureal
drivers installed.
Does anybody have experience getting this card to work or any additional
insight? I've heard other people say it was a breeze ... not so for me.
Just for reference, I'm running Red Hat 6.2 with 2.2.17 kernel, but I've
also tried installing the drivers under 2.2.14
Thanks in advance!

That did it! Works beautifully now. Do you have an explanation why it crashes
when you mount the dos partition from the install program?
Still, the ppp stuff is missing from both linuxconf and control-panel.

Hi,
I have a pair of systems on a local network. One system, call it sysT,
has a tape drive attached to it. The second system, call it sysL, does
not.
sysL is running Slackware 7.0 to which I have installed the dump/restore
program that implements the BSD commands of the same names. If I run
sysT under Redhat 5.0 and execute the command 'rrestore -i -f
sysT:/dev/st0' all works fine. If I execute this same command on sysL
with Slackware 7.1 running on sysT I get the following error message on
sysL: 'Permission denied. Logon to sysT as root failed.' My notes
indicate that the only change I had to make to sysT was to include root
access via the file /root/.rhosts, which I have done on both systems.
I have even tried adding sysL to the /etc/hosts.equiv file on sysT
running under Slackware 7.1.
Can anyone make a suggestion as to what can be wrong and what I should
try next?
For what it's worth, rmt came pre-installed under Slackware but I had to
install the dump/restore programs. I did this using the binary rpm from
sourceforge and certainly the restore part works in conjuntion with
Redhat 5.0 on sysT.
Thanks in advance for any help you are able to provide.

refresh rate to high for your monitor? Get your monitor's manual and
check the maximum frequency ranges against the numbers in
/etc/X11/XF86Config

this is just because your virtual screen doesn't size along with the
resolution change. Manually alter /etc/X11/XF86Config to avoid this
(skip the virtual screen part, and the resolutions you do not use.

Under RH.6 I used XISP to connect (my all time favourite, which doesn't
