Subject: Re: Setting up a joystick in Suse 7.0

The sblive is not actually activated by the normal register at 0x201;
this is actually a mirror for compatibility. I think that in all of the
models that are even remotely new, it was enabled by default, but the
early revisions didn't do so. Some of the earlier emu10k1 modules didn't
try to enable the joystick, thinking it was already enabled (various
revisions fixed this). So if you have the wrong version of emu10k1,
combined with an older revision sblive (I think rev 5 or earlier), it
might still fail to be enabled. In which case try the latest cvs
snapshot from the http://opensource.create.com page. There is also a
developer section you could post info to.

However, try this in order shown, as root:
insmod emu10k1-joy io=0x200
insmod joystick
insmod joy-logitech

If that fails, get the latest cvs; if it still fails, monitor
/var/log/messages while you try to load things (such as with tail -f -n
30 /var/log/messages) and send the results to the emu10k1 devel list
(check out opensource.creative.com for the list).

Dear all,

This problem was luckily solved by my colleague. one of parameters must
exist in /etc/fstab:
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0

By default, it is set ready while installing the system.

Good luck!

Yes. You can switch resolutions on the fly with CNTL-ALT-+, that's
the control, alt, and plus key all at the same time. You can also
change which resolution comes up first by default.

There is a section of the /etc/X11/XF86Config file that looks like
this:

# The accelerated servers (S3, Mach32, Mach8, 8514, P9000, AGX, W32, Mach64
# I128, and S3V)
Section "Screen"
    Driver "accel"
    Device "My Video Card"
    Monitor "Sony CPD-17SF2"
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1280x1024" "1600x1200" "640x480" "1024x768"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 8
        Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "640x480" "1024x768" "1280x1024" "1600x1200"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
EndSection

For each Display subsection, go to the Modes line and list the
resolution you like first.

Most of the time, people select this through a graphical configuration
tool. See if you can run the command "XF86Setup", as root, without X
and KDE running, and set the configuration you like. Then use the
xvidtune for the fine-tuning.

Once you have X (by this I mean KDE, your entire desktop) starting up
in the right resolution, go through the steps of running xvidtune and
getting a Modeline and putting it in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file.

It used to be the case that some monitors could be permanently damaged
by being run at the wrong hsync and vsync frequencies, or something.
I believe that most modern monitors have some sort of chip controller
in them and they will protect themselves. It is probably not
something you have to worry about.

You can just open a text terminal right there in KDE, and use su to be
root in that terminal, and that way you can cut-and-paste the modeline
numbers without having to write them down.

Michael> From the root prompt (#), I typed vi /etc/X11/XF86Config and

As I explained above, you need to switch X into the 1024x768
resolution and then generate a new modeline.

As a side note, is there a reason you prefer the lower resolution ?
I've had monitors that were kind of flickery at the highest
resolution, but if you are doing it because you don't like X to have a
virtual desktop so that you use the mouse to pan around and see
everything, then there is some way to turn that off and keep the same
resolution.

Michael>
Michael> Excuse me for asking for more details. I am new to linux.

No problem, that's what this group is for. Restart X the same way you
always get to a KDE environment; usually it is the command "startx".

Sounds like thie IRQ isn't correct since it doesn't show up in
/proc/interrupts. Try 'lspci -v' from root to see what PCI discovery
says the card wants. I am not familiar with the card. If it is PNP you
may need to use isapnp tools to configure it correctly.

Jeff,

Monitor /var/log/messages on the server while you attempt the access.
You probably have a permission problem. Usually in /etc/hosts.allow.
At any rate post the err msgs so we can see what you have.

Help!:-(

Hi all - BIG problem - at least it is for me...

Shipping out overseas in a few days - need the linux laptop connected to
the net asap when I arrive in the new location. Already have the
settings for my new isp/account - BUT...

DYNAMICALLY ASSIGNED DNS!!!

THIS is the problem - I have a dialup number, account, password, etc. I
have a domain, a proxy server, mail server settings etc - but both IP
addresses AND the DNS nameserver are dynamically assigned...

This basically means I have *nothing* to put in /etc/resolv.conf or in
my netcfg settings/etc. for dns...

If anyone out there can help me I'd really appreciate it - I'm leaving
in a few days and desperately need to test/login to the new system a few
times before I feel confident about forwarding emails/etc...

Thanks in advance,

John.

I have a 600X on which I have installed linux as a primary
OS and windows-2000 as a 2ndary.

I have not attempted to do anything with sound nor have I fooled with
the modem. I only thing I had to fool with to get a function window
system was the X-config. Mine is posted at
ftp.remotesensing.org/pub/600X/.
Redhat-6.2 installs and works fine including functioning of 3com
pcmcia 10/100 netowrk and 28.8 modem cards. I have really had no
significant hassels with linux and am quite satisfied with it.

Windows-2000, on the other hand, is essentially worthless using the
media that came with the thinkpad. When installed first it is a pain
to repartition before installing linux. If installed 2nd it erases
the primary linux OS. IBM was no help with this problem. Their delivered
media is designed to erase the entire disk during the installation.
Sounds suspiciously like an agreement with MS.

Hi John,

You'll have to ask your ISP what the addresses of the DNS servers are. They
should be helpful enough and give you them over the phone (well we do with
our customers) :)

You can install Windows 98 and 2000 on single partition (dual-boot) and Linu

Have a look at man pppd - there is an option "usepeerdns" that is described
as follows (thankyou middle mouse button):

 usepeerdns
Ask the peer for up to 2 DNS server addresses. The
addresses supplied by the peer (if any) are passed
to the /etc/ppp/ip-up script in the environment
variables DNS1 and DNS2. In addition, pppd will
create an /etc/ppp/resolv.conf file containing one
or two nameserver lines with the address(es) sup
              plied by the peer.
