Which is the script that starts the X server?  (system boots to kdm;
distro is Mandrake 7 / Redhat 6.) I need to pass options to the X
server but in startx and the like I see no command "X".

Hello,

I just installed RedHat 6.2 (Zoot) and according to the book I'm
reading, in order to get on the ineternet, I need to run modemtool
from a terminal window under X.

Well, I can't start x, and I'm guessing it's not installed by default
when you choose "server" instead of the default "Gnome Workstation",
and I telnet'd into it and tried to run modem tool, but it won't work.

Is there something extra I need to install?

TIA

So, have you read /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/OPL3-SA2? I think
not since your MSS port is out of range and I don't think you can use SB
emulation and MSS at the same time.

"man mount" contains a section "Mount options for ntfs" , which you can
use for options field in the fstab. The type field has to be set to
ntfs and all other fields have the same meaning as for all other
filesystems.

startx -option1 -option2 -- -option3 -option3

Here, option1 and option2 will be used by startx. option3 and option4
will be passed as paramteres to the X server. Anything after the --
is passed to the X server.

BTW startx calls xinit which is the X initializer.

Hello,
I am trying to setup NFS. I am running Redhat 6.2 as the NFS server and
Redhat 7.0 as the NFS client. I think I have everything set up
correctly. I followed the NFS howto. But, when I try and connect, I get
Permission Denied. I even tried to connect to the server from the server
machine and connect to localhost and I get the same error message. Does
anybody have any ideas?

Thanks,

Does that last statement mean that your ISP is firewalling your
connection? Do /etc/host.allow or hosts.deny contain anything? Do the
remote IPs resolve to hostnames?

Do /var/log/messages or /var/log/secure show any sign of the attempted
connections?

Subject: some advice needed on formatting (RH 6.2)
Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2000 00:41:44 -0400

I have tried many times unsuccessfully to have my dual-9-gig SCSI drives PC
work with
RH 6.2 booting from the hard drive. NO LUCK. No matter how many times I try
to
reinstall, it seem that RH has a built-in script that forces the LILO files
to go into /,
and not into a small /boot partition (way before the 1024-sector limit) as
I'm asking it to.
This is using fdisk as my partition tool. Works perfect booting from a
floppy.

So I figured, what the hell, let's put a small DOS partition at the top of
one of the drives,
install system commander and make it work that way.

The problem is that DOS doesn't seem to recognize that there any drives
present
on my system. Nothing formattable. No "fdisk /MBR" command works under
DOS....nothing.
I tried reformatting one of the disks with the built-in BIOS SCSI tools
provided.
(Adaptec AIC-7880) Spent yet more time doing it.

What gives? How do I resurrect my disks to even be recognized by a non-Linux
OS?

Hi all

I recently loaded Mandrake 7.1 linux distribution onto my Dell 866MHz PIII
as a dual OS with Win98. The installation seemed to go OK except I have yet
been unable to establish communication to my modem. I am aware of the issues
relating to Win modems. My internal modem is a 3COM Model 0727, V.90 56K
Internal Voice Faxmodem PCI Model 3CP2976-OEM-50 [OEM "Hawk"]
4X2USA-32034-M5-E. This model is listed as Linux friendly on the
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html Web site. In Win98 system
information says that my modem is communicating through COM5 IRQ3 I/O dfe0.
I have been told in previous posts that COM5 is an alias for COM3. However,
when I use the setserial command for COM3 (i.e. setserial /dev/ttys2 IRQ3
PORT 0xdfe0 ^fourport ^auto_irq skip_test autoconfig spd_vhi) all I get is
an "input/output error" message returned in Konsole. I get the same response
using ttys0, 1 and 3. I have used the "lspci" to confirm that the IRQ and
Port settings are correct. I am at a loss of what to do next. I am still a
newbie at Linux and would appreciate any step-by-step guide to
troubleshooting and resolving my modem problems. I like the linux OS a lot
but unless I can get my modem working I will be forced to return to using
Win98 which would be a shame.

Thanks in advance for help

1 - use redhat 6.0 not 6.1 or 6.2 though those will work also.
2 - you will want to do an ftp install if the machines have nics
if they don't I am not sure what you would use the machines for?
3 - they CAN run a gui but with 240MBs, that is cutting it real close. You
have to decide what you want to do on the machines. Any decent web server
and ftp server need a good 500MBs for storing. You could always run a proxy
server and firewall.

But he is using kdm. Just guessing this is based on xdm, so should have
a config file like /etc/X11/kdm/Xservers. This is where you pass options
to the X server. I've added the 'dpi 100' line below.

 :0 local /usr/bin/X11/X -dpi 100

I don't think this will work, because something should already be
mounted as /. Before you do the mount command above, can't you see
files and directories with ls / ?

You are on the right path. Here is what you need to do:

1) Create a place to mount the /dev/hda5 to:

cd /
mkdir mountpoint
(you can use "mountpoint" if you want, or call it harddisk5, or
something)

2) Mount the partion to the mountpoint

mount -t ext2 /dev/hda5 /mountpoint

At this point you should see your old files in /mountpoint, and /
should have the files from the rescue floppy. So the file you want to
edit is /mountpoint/etc/lilo.conf, not /etc/lilo.conf.

3) Edit /mountpoint/etc/lilo.conf

Emacs won't be on the rescue disk of course, so you may have to vi or
pico or whatever they put on there.

4) run lilo

I think you may have been missing this step. You can edit the
lilo.conf files all you want, but you have to actually run lilo for it
to take effect. Lilo looks at /etc/lilo.conf by default, and you want
it to look at the one you modified, /mountpoint/etc/lilo.conf; also
lilo is now in /mountpoint/sbin/lilo instead of /sbin/lilo. Try this
command:

/mountpoint/sbin/lilo -C /mountpoint/etc/lilo.conf

Notice how I specify the full path to everything, because at this
stage stuff is mounted to weird places. Hopefully that will work; if
lilo is dynamically linked and needs to find something in /lib or
/usr/lib it might not. If it works, great, otherwise try running this
command and then try it again:

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/mountpoint/lib:/mountpoint/usr/lib:/mountpoint/usr/local/lib

So hopefully at this point you can reboot and have your system back.

If you use something other than mountpoint, replace mountpoint
throughout all these instructions.

If it doesn't work, post again here.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I just want to point out
that the size of the running X is sometimes not related to the amount
of system RAM it is taking up, because it can apparently reflect the
videocard RAM as well. Now, if you didn't change hardware, it still
leaves the question of why there is such a big increase.

I got an error similar to this when attempting to install RedHat on an
athlon. The problem was resolved by typing the following at the LILO:
prompt

linux x86_serial_nr=1

and then rebuilding the kernel. Apparently the kernel was trying to
disable Intel's cpuid when the cpu was actually an athlon. If you
give more of the boot messages, we could tell more; their was a
reference to cpuid a few lines above it, I believe.

I tried mandrake 7.1, and everything worked fine, the correct cpu was
detected.

Martin> I have tried doing everything again. I've written over LILO by

Yes. One way is to boot from a dos diskette and do fdisk /mbr; I
think you might have to change to C: or something, haven't been forced
to resort to my old drdos floppies in a while. From linux, the
command lilo -U /dev/hda will copy the previous boot sector back, but
it sounds like you don't have access to linux.

You need to delete the linux partitions before dos can see the drives.
Then be sure to tell linux during the installation where you want lilo.

Uninstall from linux

To uninstall from a running linux system do the following.

    boot into linux.
    login as root
    /sbin/lilo -u
fdisk /dev/hda # or sda depending on your hard drive.
    delete all linux partitions
    quit and save changes
reboot with a DOS/windoz boot disk.
    enter: fdisk /MBR

You will need to format the partition or drive back to a DOS/windows
format

===========================
OR:
Using the installation boot disk

Use the installation boot disk to boot the system and follow through
the install up to the
partitioning section. Delete all linux partitions and then choose the
"Back" button and save the
changes when asked. Then reboot the system with a windows boot disk and
do a:

fdisk /MBR

You will have to format the disk backto the DOS format.
