Notation is flexible, allowing equations of the sort:
H2 + O2 --> H2O
Ref: http://library.thinkquest.org/3659/chmreact/equation.html
Given that the context was Transcription, I used chemical notation. I
am sorry if that causes some confusion.
What I said was:
X --> P --> E
The equality in this instance refers to the fact that production of the
product H2O is accounted for completely by the reactants H2 and O2. In
the expression I gave, I am stating that the initial program store (or
hard drive) of a computer system can be defined by a set X of
installation disks, CDs, files.
Once constructed, the Progam store defines completely the initial
execution environment E of a computer system. This amounts to the
observation that the execution environment E is loaded from the program
store P.

The modem init string setting is contained in the file:
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0
look for a line that look like this:
'' 'ATZ'
change it to look like this:
'' 'ATZ&F0'
If you want to edit it further by hand look at "man chat" to find
out what to put in there.
While you're at it edit the file:
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0
look for a line that looks like this:
DEBUG="no"
change it to look like this:
DEBUG="yes"
to turn on debug messages and then post the logon errors from
/etc/messages here (edit out your IP addresses first)
so we can see what's happening.
Good luck,
Bluster

Are you pointing your browser to something like:
file:/home/user/documents/whatever.html
?
(or, are you doing File/Open -> Open in navigator to select the
document you want to view?)
If so, maybe it's locking because it's looking for the home page;
I also have that problem whenever my ISP is down (which happens
far too often! :-( ), and I simply have to wait... (there must
be a way to fix this, though -- just that I don't know how).
The other alternative (again, if that's your case) is that you
could configure in your preferences so that your starting (home)
page is a local file.

Hi,
I've been lurking trying to get to grips with my duel boot problem :
Spec.
=====
Sony Vaio PCG-F304 laptop with 12GB disk
I want to be able to run WIN2k and LINUX, so I saw ergophobes recent
email on : "Best way to partition my hardisk"...
1. Creating a 10mb boot partition,
2. Installwin2k and then creating two 4gb fat32 partitions for windows
3. Leave approx 4 gb space for Linux.
at this point Caldera installs ok, however Redhat Disk Druid complained
that the boot partition was too big (any ideas of how to get around this ?).
4. booted up Caldera, and did dd if=/dev/hda7 of=bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
5. copied bootsect.lnx to my boot partition ( cp bootsect.lnx /dev/hda )
I rebooted, and my ntloadr menu completely disappeared... now I can only
boot in Linux. (Anyone know how to restore the ntloader back to how it was
?.)
Is the above process the correct way to do this ?... can anyone offer any
advice ?.
Thanks for you time !!!.

Nick

Someone that calls himself "Arch" anything shouldnt need GUI tools :-)
Gimme a break with the credentials. As I'm sure that someone with all those
credentials
would never just upgrade a production system to an *.0 distribution without
fully
testing it first whats the big deal? Keep using 6.2 and wait for 7.1 or
7.2.
Incidentally, the C compiler is also broken, I hope you werent planning to
build a custom kernel.

Soft or warm reboot is done without full reset of the hardware,
no memory check etc.
In old DOS days, a warm reboot was done when one pressed Ctrl-Alt-Del
combination, while cold reboot by pressing Reset button.
Since my original posting I have found kernel boot option
"reboot=warm" which should, according to BootPrompt HOWTO, make it.
Unfortunately, at least on my laptop, it does not change anything.

Hi Carlos,
Of course, my browser is configured to start at a local page.
But I think it is trying to contact whatever URL's are embedded in the
page's script. (example: directhit.com, keywords.netscape.com)
Is there not an off-line browse mode where the broswer doesn't
try to get those resources over the network when you are disconnected.
I remember old Netscape (v 1.1?) for the mac had a little utility
that enabled it to do this.

Is there a way to have Linux bootup from a CD and run a web server

Date: Tue, 3 Oct 2000 01:39:46 +0930
Hello,
I am having a hell of a time trying to identify the name of a file near the
end of my disk.
My specs:---------------------
I have a 15GB Seagate hard drive with windows ME on it. I have an old 540MB
drive that I use for my windows swap file.
What I have done:-----------
I have defragmented the hard drive as required in the fips documentation,
and have checked for the hidden 'mirror' file and the other hidden file that
is mentioned (name and type escapes me at the moment). I have also erased
the swap file on the drive I wish to partition (I now use another hard drive
for my windows swap file...but it is not big enough to put LINUX on it so I
need to partition the primary drive using fips). I have also tried the dos
commands 'dir /a:h /s' and 'dir /a:s /s' to find hidden files on the disk,
but I get a large list returned and don't have the courage/stupidity to go
erasing them all.
What FIPS does:------------
it doesn't complain about anything, however it allows me a maximum of a 24MB
sized partition for Linux! I presume there is 24Mb between this rogue file
and the end of the disk....
any ideas on how I can find out how to delete/move this file would be
greatly appreciated.
thanks very much for your time...

I would like use the two Abit cards to make my RAID. How can I make the

A chemical equation equates two sides. It has to balance. Your example above
is invalid because there are two oxygen atoms on the left but only one on the
right. You want:
2H2 + O2 <--> 2H2O
Also note that you can write a double arrow into most reactions, because
they go both ways (it's just a question of where the equilibrium position
lies).

It sounds as if you don't have a default gateway set up. Do you have any
nameservers specified in /etc/resolv.conf? DO you have "GATEWAYDEV=ppp0"
in your /etc/sysconfig/network?
What distro are you using? I'm assuming a redhat-type one here.

Ooops! CErtainly didn't mean to steer you wrong and I can only attest to my
Win2K/COL2.4 experience. I don't know Redhat. Sorry about that. I don't
know why the partitions would be too large, since my partitions (aside from
boot) are all around 10 Gigs. No problems.

I think this may be the error. The safe thing, if you're using NTLDR is to
put it on a floppy and boot up in NT and then write it to C: I assume C: is
your /dev/hda1, whereas by writing to /dev/hda like that, I'm guessing you
blew away your boot sector and that's why NT er.. Win2K doesn't boot
anymore. Hopefully someone a bit more expert will chime in and either
confirm or contradict this.
Good luck,
Tom

And I assume, you meant MD5sums and not MD4sums

I see this 'ext2' about a fair bit in discussions about partitioning.
Anyone care to enlighten me?
Thanks!
