Cool! I'm glad to hear it and thanks for posting to say it worked, since
someone else (Nick) had disastrous results. I don't htink he quite followed
my directions, or they were ambiguous. Anyway, since I have more experience
with Linux, it was actually the Win2K part that had me stressed out. I find
it ironic - my experience thus far is that Win2K is as good as advertised -
not a single crash in the few weeks I've been running it. That said, with
Linux-like stability, comes great complexity. Ultimately I find Linux
easier to figure out than Win2K - especially if you actually want to
backtrack from some sort of error.
Cheers and have fun,
Tom

Hi all,
I want to ask how to run apache server as root. It tell me to recompile

and I have already add the line:
EXTRA_CFLAGS= -DBIG_SECURITY_HOLE
to the "src/Configuration" , but it still not work and compaint the
same.
I have search through deja.com and saw some other question also saying

The version, rpm refers to, is the version of the .rpm file format - not
the version of the package therein.
rpm was upgraded in 7.0 and the .rpm file version went from 2 to 3 - which
means, that it is basically not possible to upgrade to RedHat 7.0
packages.
You do however have another choice:
Download the gcc source (gcc-2.96-54.src.rpm) and recompile it with 'rpm
--rebuild gcc-2.96-54.src.rpm'. Now you have the binary packages in
/usr/src/redhat/i386/RPMS/i386.
Source rpm's do not seem to be affected by the file version upgrade.
Also, you could upgrade to rpm 4 by the same procedure. Thereafter you
will be able to use .rpm-3 packages (if you run rpm --rebuilddb
first). But then you won't be able to change back to the old version.

This is a reasonable way to proceed. There's a HOWTO on the subject, I
believe. I also cover it in my book, _The Multi-Boot Configuration
Handbook_ (http://www.rodsbooks.com/multiboot/).
> so I'm trying to install Gentus Linux using the Custom option

Quite honestly, I believe this is the first I've heard of Gentus Linux.
Presumably it's a pretty minor distribution. It's certainly not the
only one that'll let you install LILO on the Linux partition's boot
sector, although some of them are pretty stupid about it and insist on
putting LILO on the MBR. Unfortunately, I don't have a list of which
ones provide which options. I do know that Red Hat lets you put LILO on
either the MBR or the boot partition. I'm pretty sure Debian does, too,
but only if the boot partition is primary (lame, lame, lame) -- but I
believe it lets you put LILO on the extended partition that contains
the boot partition (slightly less lame).

I've two suggestions:
1) Create your partitions using some other utility. PartitionMagic
(http://www.powerquest.com, and a copy of the previous version also
comes with my book) lets you create Linux partitions directly. You
could also use some Linux micro-distribution or some other
distribution's emergency recovery disk to do the job. OTOH, I don't
know if Gentus would let you use pre-created Linux partitions -- some
distributions positively insist on creating their own partitions
(again, lame, lame, lame).
2) Switch to another distribution. My hunch is you're running into a
Gentus-specific bug, although it's also possible you've got some sort
of hardware problem or Linux driver problem that wouldn't be fixed by
switching to another distribution.
If you try one or both of these and can't get around the problem, post
some more information on your disk system -- what motherboard or EIDE
controller you're using (if you've got EIDE disks) or what SCSI host
adapter you're using (if you've got SCSI disks). You might also want to
post the make, model, and size of your hard disk or disks, and the exact
partition layouts (size and type of each partition).

Type the following commands to get rid of sendmail:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail stop
rpm -e sendmail
You should then be able to install qmail by following the instructions
on the qmail Web site.
One caveat: qmail delivers mail in a very different way than does
sendmail, and this will break a lot of mail programs. You'll need to
install updated versions of these programs if you want to use qmail.
You may find it easier to replace sendmail with Postfix
(http://www.postfix.org), which is similar to qmail in its design
theory, but more compatible with sendmail in terms of how it delivers
mail and in its usage options. Mandrake uses Postfix, and chances are
the Mandrake Postfix RPMs will work with Red Hat with few or no
changes, although I've not tried this.

first I would check the Winmodem page at
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html, or possibly the Linux
Hardware Database at lhd.zdnet.com for info on these modems. You didn't
specify which modems, so we can help you further. If they are 56k, you
can almost surely bet they are winmodems, not linmodems.

When I installed RH 7.0, it didn't ask for the second CD-ROM at all,
although I believe some of the programs I wanted to install afterwards
were on the second CD-ROM. Of course, this might vary depending upon the
installation options you choose, so I can't make any guarantees about
what'll happen when you do the installation.

Hi,
I believe that the first disk is for the installation (has RPMS / base
directories etc. ) and the second disk is the source code. I don't think the
second disk is needed unless you want the source code.

Hell all...thought I'd share some good luck/news with you all so you too
can get up and running...
I ran the "XFree86 -configure" command and was left with a bare bones
XF86Config file. That file allowed me to startup in a low res low bit
depth state...Here's what I did to get going:
I added HorizSync and VertRefresh ranges to the "Monitor" section.
I added a DefaultDepth 24 to the "Screen" subsection.
I next added the following line to the 24 bit depth display subsection:
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600"
I ran startx
I then ran xvidtune in each mode to get the timings right.
(I switched modes using Ctl-Alt-KeyPadPlus)
I then took all that data and added mode blocks in the "Monitor" section.
I now have a flawlessly running xserver. The only problem left is how to
adjust the virtual desktop...good luck!

It stands for "Linux Extended FileSystem, version 2", and is the
standard filesystem for Linux-based systems. Other examples of
filesystems are FAT, FAT32, NTFS, HPFS, and ISO9660 (the CDROM fs)

Subject: Re: RH6.0 installs, but won't boot
Date: Mon, 02 Oct 2000 18:09:10 GMT
The BIOS can use "Normal", "Large", "LBA", or "AUTO" mode to recognize the
disk geometry. The first two give me 1647 cyls, 16 heads, 63 sectors. The
other two give me 823 cyls, 32 heads, 63 sectors. The drive itself is marked
with the first geometry, so I used Win95's fdisk to rewrite the MBR. Then, I
partitioned as follows:
Device Start End Mount Point
============ ======== ====== ================
/dev/hda1 1 131 /
/dev/hda2 132 392 [swap]
/dev/hda3 393 913 /var
/dev/hda4 914 1647 /usr
After formatting, and installing packages, I put LILO in the /dev/hda1
partition, not the MBR. That got me to the situation I'm in now. The BIOS
has PnP disabled, and I've manually configured the 3Com card to use IRQ10
and I/O base 0x300.
The silly machine will boot just fine from the RH6.0 install diskette, just
not from the hard drive. Where do I look?
