I start it by either clicking the icon on the panel or I type gnomecc
in a terminal. Neither works. It just silently quits.
$ gnomecc && echo success
success

i'm a new linux/old unix user who has just installed redhat 6.2
on a cyrix 686/166Hz machine with 64MB ram. it's not
top dollar hardware, but I'm still a bit discouraged by how
slow linux runs. using the Gnome/Enlightenment combination,
it takes palpable seconds to get shell window open, on the order
of a minute for graphical apps. is this normal?
the system monitor shows all the ram, with most of it (~55mb)
in use with no apps running. i don't seem to have any hoggy
processes running in the back, and i've got a 250MB swap file
(which, however, sometimes is flagged as FAILED for shut
down while halting the machine). the video card has 1MB,
not a lot, but it shouldn't make the machine crawl (should it?).
my last unix box was an old sparc with 32mb of ram and solaris 5,
it flew in comparison to this. is there something i should look for?
should i bag the hardware, the os, or both?
addendum: i installed with 32mb of ram, but doubled this shortly
thereafter; do i need to tell the kernel something about this? i figured
since the system monitor tool picked it up, i was set.
thanks for any tips,
jeph

Hi. I've just recompiled my 2.2.17 kernel with support for my Creative
Ensoniq (ES1371, I think) sound card. When I use freeamp or mpg123 to
play the sounds via the esd sound daemon I get background crackling and
static, not too dissimilar in sound to radio interference. It still
occurs when the monitor is off so I doubt it is that. Everything seems
fine when I log out back to gdm and then run mpg123 from the console.
>From a spot of initial listening this morning the interference seems to
correspond to system activity, as viewed via a panel applet. It is not
very loud, but is very noticable.
Does anyone know of any way round this? I'm loathe to start buying new
cables if it is actually the esd sound daemon. I can live without system
sounds quite easily, I just want to play mp3's.
FYI, the system is an AMD Duron with a Microstar 6330 motherboard and
128Mb. The Ensoniq driver is compiled into the kernel. I am running
Redhat 6.2 with Helix Gnome and the latest updates (I think).
A quick look at deja seems to indicate people may have had problems with
buffers and Ensoniq before ie they need to be enlarged to fix some
problems. However, I couldn't find any articles discussing interference.
Any suggestions?

Had you wanted to halt rather than reboot:
$ su root
# shutdown -h 0
The 0 is how many second to wait. BTW, try:
$ man shutdown
For more info.
On most UNIX's, there's a file called /etc/shutdown.allow you
can add non-root users to to allow them to shutdown. I don't
have access to a linux box right now to verify it's in the same
place, though.
And, yes, I'm pretty sure there's a shutdown option somewhere in
linuxconf.

On most RPM-based systems, you would need to install the apache-devel RPM
in addition to the apache RPM. No need to reinstall the server itself.

I am in the process of converting my system from win98 to a dual boot
linux and win98. I used Fips successfully and I have two partitions. I
deleted the second one since I own partition magic 3.0. (It needs some
free space to move things.) After deleting the new partition I attempted
to move it, but for some reason partition magic says that the win98
partition is other not fat32. When I requested the info on the partition
it listed it as fat32x. What is fat32x. fdisk says the partion is a
fat32 partition.
I have been trying to reformat everything so I have been going this more
complicated path. I have moved partitions in the past with this software
and have had no problem.

Actually, Win2K is just Windows NT 5.0 with another name, and it's
virtually identical to Windows NT 4.0 in terms of dual-booting with
Linux. I'm pretty sure there's at least one Linux HOWTO document on the
subject. There's also something at http://www.ntfaq.com/. My book, _The
Multi-Boot Configuration Handbook_ (http://www.rodsbooks.com/multiboot/)
may also be useful. My personal preference in this situation is to use
either LILO or a third-party boot loader to select which OS to run,
leaving NT's OS Loader to boot NT/2K alone. It's possible to use OS
Loader as the primary boot loader, but that requires you to take some
extra steps if/when you upgrade your Linux kernel or need to add kernel
options to LILO. Others prefer to use OS Loader as the primary boot
loader.

Subject: Boot Manager

I am looking for a boot manager that would allow me to administer a large
number of linux machines remotely. In essence I would like to have two
partitions:
1) an administration partition that the machine could be rebooted onto to
download a new image to the main disk.
2) the main partition where linux would normally run.
I can kind of see doing this with LILO by telneting to the machine and
changing the default boot partition, but this seems kind of crude.
Is there a more elegant approach for upgrading a large number of systems?
Thanks,

This is your problem. When you installed you told the installer to create
a default route via your ethernet card. Pppd won't replace an existing
default route. Get rid of it: you don't need it anyway. Edit
/etc/init.d/network and comment out every line with the word GATEWAY in it.

Yup, it sure is. somehow, and it is completely mysterious how, you have
a default route attached to lo. This is totally weird (and useless). I
have never seen this before.
It should NOT be there, and you need to figure out why it is there.
Check /etc/sysconfig/network for the gateway line. Remove it.
Check the /etc/sysconfig/static-route to see if there is something there
which ccould be setting a default route for lo.
