I don't have Mandrake, but I know it is based on Red Hat and that
comes with an ftp server installed. ftp deamon is started automatically
when a user attempts an ftp connection to your server. This is
handled by the inetd deamon. Check the /etc/inetd.conf file to
see if the ftp entry is commented out. If so, edit this file and
un-comment the ftp line.

ftp can be a large security hole if not set up correctly. The
configuration files are /etc/ftp*. /etc/ftpaccess is the main
configuration file. Here you define your ftp policy, such as
what directories to use, whether or not anonymous ftp access is
enabled, etc. /etc/ftpusers is misnamed, it has a list of users
that are not allowed to use ftp (such as wheel, nobody, adm, root,
and other non-user accounts).

Check the Linux Documentation Project (or your local documentation)
for the ftp How-to document.

That's right. Netscape tries to contact your proxy or the sites direct.

You can try to use wwwoffle, which downloads the sites you need while your'e
online. Then you can read offline.

homepage is http://www.gedanken.demon.co.uk/wwwoffle for more information.

You can get adaptors from co-ax to RJ45, but a new card may well be
cheaper.

there are "int __fpc_csr" & "double __fpregs[6]" in struct __jmp_buf[1]

if the mips cpu has no fpu, can i just simply remove those 2 fpu regs

I can say that i have a Netgear FA-310Tx card, the same as you and i have
used in in my redhat 5.1, 5.2, 6.0, 6.1, and 6.2 box. Each time it has
worked using the generic tulip driver. I found one case where something
messed up and i tried the provided tulip.o off the disk and it worked geat.
Its a good card and doesn't require much messing with. I suggest that u
keep this (my 3com nic sux). Also, if u only need a 10base use a pci Ne2K.
Hope this helps.

I partitioned my hard drive into the following..........

C: windows' 98

I give about 2.4 GB of the space to Linux, is this ok?

The installation process went fine, no problem, but after I rebooted nothing
comes up, no boot menu nothing.........
I can't even go to windows 98.......... after I boot with CD-ROM and set the
C: to active, then I can only
boot to windows 98......... I can't see the Linux partition, I can't delete
the Linux Partition because I can't

I have a problem with NIS. My clientes was configured to mount their /home

The following message appear in the server when the clients logon:
"fh_verify: home/test permission failure, acc=4, error=13".
The strange thing is: all clients mount and authenticate normally without
problem.
What's matter this message?

I recently had luck with X by installing Redhat 7.0 on my 5000e. However,
on my machine it has a nasty tendancy to lock when exiting X after it's
been in X for more than about 1/2 hour. Other than that, it works fine
(except for apm, but I let the bios handle that instead).

Good luck!

Subject: Frame buffers, G200, applying to all consoles.
From: Bill Pringlemeir <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 06:16:28 GMT

I am using Petr Vandrovec's patch for the frame buffer code using a
Matrox accelerator cards. My card is a G200. Everything seems to be
working, except I cann't get _ALL_ my virtual consoles to use the mode I
want. (Kernel 2.2.17)

I tried to pass the parameters to the kernel. Here was the line that
I sent.

  append = "hdc=ide-scsi max_scsi_luns=1
video=matrox:enabled,accel,nopan,xres:1024,yres:768,depth:32,pixclock:10582,left:160,right:64,upper:64,lower:30,hslen:64,vslen:6"

This is the same as an entry in my fb.modes.

mode "1024x768"
    # D: 94.500 MHz, H: 68.677 kHz, V: 84.997 Hz
    geometry 1024 768 1024 8180 8
    timings 10582 208 48 36 1 96 3
    accel true
endmode

I also tried several others, like video=matrox:vesa:443 etc from the
boot prompt.

Anyways, I was just trying modifications to rc.local, inittab and
using chvt, open, deallocvt etc. I would love to get all of the
consoles to come up in 1024x768 mode. It is great that the monitor
doesn't switch modes when they are all the same resolution. I am much
happier not to use `X' with this.

bye,
Bill

You can cycle through them with the combination of Alt, Ctrl,
and + and - buttons on the keypad.

This happens since your monitor at your desk is probably different
than the ones in the Data Center. You should *ALWAYS* setup your X
to reflect your hardware. The video card and the monitor. If your
monitor on your desktop is high end, and the one in the Data Center
is low end, then there is a chance that you will fry the one at
the Data Center.

A question. Are you sure you need X in the Data Center?

It has nothing to do with that. /usr/src/linux/System.map describes
the entry points (address) of the different functions in the
kernel. This is very helpful if you have a kernel oops. That usually
gives you and address, and from that, you can figure out which
function caused the kernel oops.

I don't know, I have never read that, but for the authorative info,
read /usr/src/linux/README which is part of the kernel source.

not having a machine like that one, I cannot say for certain.

But it is a well-known fact that IF you do not have enough cache for
the amount of RAM in your box, that performance becomes absolutely horrid!
Does your system have a big enough cache for 64mb RAM? I don't know where
the limit lies, it may differ from board to board. I've got (and used to
use as my main Linux system) a P90 (old Asus board) with 256Kb of cache,
and it works fine with 32megs of RAM but bumping it up to 40 the performance
becomes absolutely awful. My current board is a FIC VA503+ with 64 megs of
RAM and 1 meg of cache, so of course I've not seen the problem here.

Some BIOS setup programs have settings for the amount of cacheable RAM in
the system, you may wish to check to make sure it allows all 64megs to
be cached. Also make sure that all the caches (both onboard the CPU chip
and off-chip cache) are enabled in the setup utility.

: addendum: i installed with 32mb of ram, but doubled this shortly
: thereafter; do i need to tell the kernel something about this? i figured
: since the system monitor tool picked it up, i was set.

And how was the performance before upgrading to 64 megs?

I've copied all my old data and blown away WinNT. Installed SuSE 6.4,
quite happily, on a Dell Latitude and now have a problem with PCMCIA.

When booting up, I watch all the services start in turn untill it gets
to the PCMCIA services. At this point the system hangs. I have checked
SuSE's web site and found an answer suggesting I 'change confirgure
file' in YaST, setting:

   PCMCIA_CORE_OPTS "do_pnp=0"

So, did this and nothing. Found another SuSE sdb entry for:

   PCMCIA_PCIC_OPTS "do_scan=0 irq_mask=0xefff"

Have tried that and once again I'm looking at a frozen screen. The
system has hung after configuring the serial ports:

   PCMCIA: Starting services
   PCMCIA: using scheme: SuSE
   _

And that's it. The PC card I'm using is a Xircom CardBus 10/100
ethernet + 56k modem.

Anyone know the answer before I'm reduced to dropping MS back on??

Bill.

1. Repair the boot environment using the Windows 2000 CD-ROM (the
procedure is similar to installing W2k, but you specify a repair at the
appropriate point).

2. Use the Linux boot diskette (you did create one, right?) to boot to
Linux and then edit lilo.conf to put LILO somewhere other than either
the MBR or the boot sector of C:.

3. Download bootpart (shareware) from the Web (do a search for it and
you'll find it) and then use it to create a boot file that points to
where you put LILO.

4. Add an entry to your W2k boot menu to load Linux using the file
created by bootpart.

That's all!

An update:

I can boot with the PC card removed. Then inserting the PC card I get a
high pitched beep. Running ifconfig shows the adapter on eth0 does not
have an ip address. After around 60 seconds I hear a lon pitched beep
and running ifconfig has removed eth0.

If I then goto sbin/ and run

   dhcpcd eth0

Low and behold, I get an ip address from the DHCP server!

Okat, I'm happy I have an address now, but this is a bit of a pain to
do each time. Can someone tell me why this is happening and what I must
do to rectify it??

I'll work on the important stuff before I complain about no soundcard!

Subject: Serial Port/ Modem Question
Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 10:00:50 +0100

I've been using Linux full-time since January - so I'm somewhere between
newbie and competent - my point of view, I know :-). I've read the
serial howto and the modem howto.

I am running a dual-boot Red-Hat 7 (previously 6.2, 6.1, and 5.6 - same
problems) and Win98 machine at home, and have been completely unable to
communicate through the serial port under Linux. I have an external
modem connected to my only serial port. It works fine under Win98 - on
COM1. Under Linux, I have tried wvdialconf - and it does not detect a
modem. I have made sure that I have read-write permissions to ttyS0-9.
The modem is on and plugged-in.

When I run setserial -g on ttyS0, it says UART: unknown. When I try to
communicate with the modem using minicom, I do not get a response to the
AT command.

I have never managed to set up my Palm cradle on the same serial-port
either - so I'm assuming that it's a serial problem.

Any ideas? I would be incredibly grateful - I am at my wits' end.

Mark.
