Nothing personal to any of you in this thread 'cause it did help me ....
but MY GOD! I thought that RedHat et al had their stuff together.. As a
newbie I am wondering what the hell Ive gotten myself into after
stepping into this 'major number' crap... Perhaps I just don't know my
way around yet... I hope so because it looks quite daunting to me even
though I am able, to this point at least, get out of Linux what I need
so far. Only after a lot of work... But I also have to say that for a
person such as myself I could not be happier with the control Linux /
Unix gives me in doing what a I need to do... Sorry for the whine...
Hope that it is entertaining if nothing else...

An interesting looking thing, but is there anything that will do cross

I'll be very surprised if you find one at all. There are only a couple
that I've come across, but they didn't even have NT drivers. Dual boot
time I think !

You might also look at 20 and 24 bit USB A to D external boxes, but
these almost certainly won't have Linux support either unless you write
it !

Hi, I have recently been having *extremely* slow connections with my
cable modem (@HOME service through COGECO in Kingston, Ontario). Slow
as in <230 bytes/second. This all started to happen after I upgraded to
the 2.4 kernel (well to 2.2.17 to 2.4) from 2.2.14...and the modem keeps
loosing its connection. Now, before I call up the cable company and
start complaining, I just want to make sure that it cannot be a
hardware/operating system problem (everytime you mention Linux to them,
they automatically say that they cannot help). Can it be something in
the setup? Was the timing with the upgrade merely coincidence?

I get my dynamic IP at bootup with DHCP protocal, and I have in my
/etc/hosts file

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain Mintaka
130.15.26.39 lola lola.phy.queensu.ca
130.15.28.14 fisher.phy.queensu.ca fisher

with my machine's hostname as Mintaka. Also through linuxconf I have it
so that addresses are first checked through /etc/hosts and then dns.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Andrew

this up and how can I do it by hand. Pico is the editor and

Subject: Problems with modules in Kernel 2.2.17
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 14:20:39 GMT

I'm in the process of upgrading my Slackware Linux 7.0 system from
kernel 2.2.13 to the latest kernel (2.2.17). I've applied all the
kernel patches and have selected my configuration via make xconfig.
The kernel and module make process runs properly (no errors reported),
but when I boot my new image, I get various failures relating to the
module support I've selected. depmod -ae 2.2.17 shows some problems
with the FAT (vfat, etc.) and NFS modules (IIRC some undefined
externals), and the kernel/kerneld doesn't autoload these modules, but
modprobe will load them and they work properly when loaded that way.
I've tried this with kmod both enabled and disabled, and the results
are similar both times (kmod enabled gets a 'looping condition' in
kmod about the time init starts up; I can resolve this if I make SysV
networking part of the monolithic kernel rather than a module).

I'd really like to install modules rather than use a monolithic
kernel, but so far, I've had to include a large number of
module-capable features in the kernel just to get through the boot
process.

I noticed that Slackware 7.0 built the same features into a monolithic
kernel (bare.i) as well, so I believe that this might be a 'feature'
of the later 2.2 kernels.

I realize I'm short on detail here (I'm far away from the machine at
the moment), so I'll post a followup with the /usr/src/linux/.config
file and the depmod -ae 2.2.17 output later. For now, I'll just ask if
anyone else has run into problems of this nature, and how (if) these
problems can be resolved?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Subject: RH7.0 Problems - new user
Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 10:29:35 -0400

I'm fairly new to RedHat and am doing my best to learn the OS. I had a
copy of 6.2 and it installed fine. I've since wiped the drive clean and
installed RH 7.0 and have had nothing but problems.

To start off, I could not install the RPM for my network drivers to get
the NIC working. This RPM works fine under 6.2, but 7.0 gives me
numerous errors. (I think it may have to do with the compiler).

Also, I want to run this box without a keyboard or monitor. It appears
7.0 does not allow you to run LINUXCONF after telneting into the box and
logging in again as SU (NETCONF won't run either). I've also tried
getting the web based LINUXCONF to run via http://mymachine:98, but alas
no go.

Are these errors/problems isolated to my system, or is this supposed to
be an enhancement to this release of RH? Any suggestions/comments would
be appreciated as I'd really like to be able to grasp this OS.

Thanks,
Russ

Thanks a lot! One more question: After I have several kernels, which
command I can use to find out the kernel I am using right now after
booting?

Is there any decent utility that will resize a ext2 partition, or should
one just delete, recreate, and restore data from backup? TIA

What model number is the NIC.
If it is a 3c905B you use the 3c59x module.

If it is a 3c905C you use the 3c90x module which is available here:
