If you mean files like .gnome in my *home* directory, no good. I
tried it having wiped out my entire home directory (including
files starting with .).

Gnome is obviously keeping information about me somewhere else,
and I don't know how to find out where.

Okay, this had me concerned so I went directly to the MS
website (yech!), figuring they should know from FAT. Here's
what they say (all valid partition types for Win9x listed;
reference
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/psdk/win95/fat32ovr_0j03.h
tm ...)

Value Description
PART_UNKNOWN (00h) Unknown
PART_DOS2_FAT (01h) 12-bit FAT
PART_DOS3_FAT (04h) 16-bit FAT. Partitions
                                            smaller than
32MB.
PART_EXTENDED (05h) Extended MS-DOS
                                            Partition
PART_DOS4_FAT (06h) 16-bit FAT. Partitions
                                            larger than or
equal
                                            to 32MB.
PART_DOS32 (0Bh) 32-bit FAT. Partitions
                                            up to 2047GB.
PART_DOS32X (0Ch) Same as PART_DOS32
                                            (0Bh), but uses
                                            Logical Block
Address
                                            Int 13h
extensions.
PART_DOSX13 (0Eh) Same as PART_DOS4_FAT
                                            (06h), but uses
                                            Logical Block
Address
                                            Int 13h
extensions.
PART_DOSX13X (0Fh) Same as PART_EXTENDED
                                            (05h), but uses
                                            Logical Block
Address
                                            Int 13h
extensions.

So, you were partly correct, Svend Olaf. The difference is
in the use of the LBA (Int 13h) extension. It has nothing to
do with size, though. Note that the 0Bh can be up to 2047
GB. No mention anywhere of 1024 cylinders. Now, since I'm
not running that drive with the LBA extension, then 0b is
the correct id for that partition...

Hi, i have a problem with the boot loader of win2k, that isn't able to boot
Linux.
My os are: Win2k on hdc1, winMe on hda1, Linux on hda5.

I'm able to boot Linux using the boot disk.
I ran BootPart to add Linux to the NT Loader menu.
When the system powers on, I'm presented with the NT Loader menu with the
items Win2K, WinMe, & Linux.
Choosing Win2K or WinMe gives no problems; they launch fine.
Choosing Linux gives me the following error.

Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or
corrupt:
<windows 2000 root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

This is not correct because ntoskrnl.exe is not missing.
I'm still able to boot Linux using the boot floppy disk.

Any help woulb be appreciated.
Thank you.

Found it. My login being oliver, the offending files were
in /tmp/orbit-oliver. I wiped out that whole directory, and
was then able to start Gnome.

Does anyone know what this "orbit" stuff is about?

Subject: Re: How do I get text-only login?
Date: Thu, 5 Oct 2000 12:58:42 -0400

Most distro's set up Virtual Consoles even while running X11 Windows.
To switch from the X11 screen to a console login use these hotkeys:

CTRL-ALT-F2 -> switch from X11 to Virtual console number 2
this should display a text login screen

Once in text mode only the lefthand ALT key works for this
screen switching so I'll call that key "LEFTALT"...

TO GET BACK TO X11 from a text console screen press:

LEFTALT-F7     -> switch back to X11 screen

(NOTE the Fn key for X11 may be different, if needed try LEFTALT-F9, etc...
to get back to the X11 screen)

Hope this helps!

Yes, 0B can be up to 2047 GB if it is a logical partition inside an
extended partition type 0F. I said that from the beginning.

I can only repeat: If you do not change the ID of hda3 to 0C, your
data will be damaged. The damage will begin in hda1.

If your BIOS does not support extended interrupt 13h you should not
use hda3.

If you have the Red Hat CD, you can quite easily create a new boot floppy,
or boot off the CD...

For the bootfloppy, use rawrite.exe on the CD to create the floppy.

For booting from the CD, select "boot installed system"

Then rerun LILO.

As long as LILO knows about the windows partition, it will work.
You just have to make sure your lilo.conf file is correct before running it.

The kernel's "/usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi/seagate.c" claims
TMC-8xx style controller support. I think that is a legacy

Subject: My Installtion Plans (from ZipDisk)
Date: Thu, 05 Oct 2000 18:06:01 GMT

So, I have read all the HOWTO files, NG postings and webpages I can
find that seem relevant to my set-up. Found that with a tiny harddrive
and no CD-rom or network connection, I can install from a ZipDisk.

Thanks to Slackware, who offer the Zip Disk Drive for installation. I
just want to verify this procedure. After getting all the hardware
info from my system (and the manual), I should:

1) Download rawrite.exe (does it matter which version rawwrite.exe,
rawwrite12.exe, etc?) and the iomega.s file. Save the iomega.s file to
a formatted floppy.

2) I assume I would Go into DOS, run RAWRITE.EXE and create the boot
disk using:
C:\>RAWRITE bare.i a:
(Should I format c:/ at this point to clean out the old system?)

3) Shut down the machine & hook up the zip drive to the parallel port.
Insert the boot disk & power up.
I assume I will end up at some sort of prompt & then switch disks to
the one with the iomego.s file.
How do I install these drivers? mount command?

4) After that do I use the
fdisk /dev/hda or cfdisk /dev/hda
command to reformat/repartition the harddrive for linux?
It is a small HDD, so I do not know if adding seperate partitions
for /home /users is optimal.
I will need to make a swap file that this point I think.

5) Put the ZipDisk with the **.bz2 file for the distribution I want in
the ZipDrive and I should be able to bunzip2 it? How do I reference
this ZipDrive?

Thanks for corrections and advice!!!

Subject: Raid Problems rh6.1 - 2.2.14 kernel HP-LXr8500 with a NetRaid Card
Date: Thu, 5 Oct 2000 15:25:27 -0400

Any idea ???????
=====================================
I have a MegaRaid controller (NetRaid) in a HP-LXr8500 server,
I just installed Linux rh6.1intel running 2.2.14 kernel,
so I am trying to configure a Raid 0 using raid tools v0.90,
but I am having some problems;

According to
http://sunsite.utk.edu/ftp/pub/linux/slackware/slackware/docs/Linux-HOWTO/HP
-HOWTO
there is an info that says:

For the RedHat 6.1 distribution, the MegaRaid driver provided
By the kernel does support only the first logical drive. In order
to obtain the others, please recompile a 2.2.14 standard kernel.

If you want to obtain that info, search at the document for "-DHP", the
next paragraph will be the info.

I have 2 types of problems.

Problem 1:

I upgraded from 2.2.12 to 2.2.14 Kernel but I could not find a raid patch
for 2.2.14 Kernel,
the last recent patch that I got, was raid0145-19990824-2.2.11.tar.gz, so
I did not patch the kernel with this old patch kernel.
Anyway with 2.2.14 kernel, I can see all raid disks from my raid
controller, so I sliced all disk as a "Linux raid" type "fd",
also made the raids partitions, but when I tried to use the raid tools, I
could not be able to define a raid 0,

I really think that I defined the /etc/raidtab file correctly and my
/proc/mdstat looks like is good.

I just looked at /var/log/dmesg and dmesg command and there is not problem
with this.
I just upgraded the Server BIOS to last version from any HW problem.
(NetRaid Card)

Poblem 2:

First:
I tried with a new kernels versions like 2.2.15 or 2.2.16, 2.2.17, but
when I try to boot with all of these new kernels the system hang. I tried
with the rh6.2 and rh 7.0 CD and I got the same error.
This is the mesg that appear at the screen monitor:
===================================================================
blah ......
blah blah......
blah blah blah.......
PCI: PCI BIOS revision 2.16
entry at 0xfdaca
PCI: Using configuration type 1
PCI: probing pci hardware
PCI: 00:c0[0e11/6010] Scanning per hosts bridge
PCI: Scanning compaq per hosts bridge 18/00
PCI: 00:c8[0e11/6010] Scanning compaq per hosts bridge
PCI: Scanning compaq per hosts bridge 19/00
PCI: 00:d0[0e11/6010] Scanning compaq per hosts bridge
PCI: Scanning compaq per hosts bridge 1a/00
After this the system HANGS.
===================================================================
Basically in this case, I think that the problem is when rh6.2 is probing
the PCI buses, its hang probing the third PCI bus SCSI at the NetRaid
controller.
I could boot with rh6.2 CD or rh7.0 if I remove the NetRaid card from the
server HP-LXr8500. I am not expecting that someone is going to tell me the
solution of this problem, cause perhaps it could be "hardware problem", the
reason is that I am writing this, is because I hope that someone got a
similar situacion and maybe could get me some ideas, I am very interests in
to use that NetRaid Card, is really pretty fast.
===================================================================

Questions:
- Any idea please?
- Is there a new raid patch for 2.2.(14,15,16,17) kernel ?
- I suppose that I have the raid defined correctly, what does mean "mkraid:
aborted, see the syslog and /proc/mdstat for potential clues" ?

Thanks,

Ps. Sorry for this large doc and sorry for an especific hardware question.

Subject: Redhat 7.0 Kernel won't compile?
Date: Thu, 05 Oct 2000 10:45:22 -0700

I just got and installed RH7 on my box. As has been the case for
the last 3 installs, when I'm done, my network is broken, because
it doesn't recognize my Linksys ethernet card. So I grab to tulip.s
file from last time I went through this (RH6.2 - or was it 6.0?),
put it in place, and started a kernel build. It gets through about
4 files before it craps out, seemingly because of problems with
SMP definitions. The output of the compile is at:

http://www.scroom.com/red_hat.txt

ANybody got any suggestions? I have been poring through to code,
trying to figure out why the SMP stuff is so whacked. It's kernel
2.2.16...

All help appreciated fully.

Thanks. I really deserve a boot up the you know what
for not going to the first place I normally check, the
man pages. Everything is right there staring me in the
face.

Subject: ftp setup help - Redhat

After installation of Redhat 6.2, I do not find /usr/sbin/in.ftpd. So I
reinstall it, choosing Anonymous FTP server this time. Now I can use FTP.
But I have three problems:

(1) Anonymous FTP is not safe, how can I turn in off?

(2) How to allow FTP as root (at least temporary)?

(3) Do I have to choose "anonymous FTP server" in the Package Group
Selection to have FTP installed? I want login-based FTP anyway.

(4) How to install the SSH/SCP stuff and enable it? I am frustrated that
the package group selection does not tell me which group contains what.

Thanks for your help.
