In my limited experience, harddware conflicts usually produce a
failure that will re-occur in the same place predictably.
Unpredictable errors such as what you describe usually ended up being
faulty memory or a failing harddrive.

I would check to see that the memory chips are well seated. Did you
assemble this machine yourself ? If so, are you sure that the CPU is
properly cooled ?

If it will reliably boot something else, if it alreadyhas windows on
it and will run that OK, then this probably isn't the problem. One
thing to consider is to find a DRDOS boot disk on the web and boot
into dos from a floppy, and see if that will run without crashing for
a bit.

No. it's not how it works. In 2.x you don't need a physical floppy or a
floppy image to install the tools. When you decide to install them, just
go to the "Settings" menu and select "VMware tools install". In the
guest OS, an A: disk with the required files will show up automagically.
Try it. It even gives you online instructions about doing the install.

Subject: Fail-over on NFS mounts?
Date: Mon, 9 Oct 2000 10:47:08 +1000

I have a two node network, each machine with RH6.2. I have mounted the
/home directory via nfs so it's available to both machines. It is working
perfectly, but doesn't offer one thing I wanted. If the machine serving the
volume is down, then at login on the client machine, I wanted it to
'fail-over' to /home on the fs mounted on the local drive. no amount of
toying with time-outs etc. can achieve this - it just hangs when a login
accesses /home/... and waits 'til the nfs volume is offered up again. fstab
(latest version - it was changed _many_ times over the weekend!) and mount
output from the client follow:

$ more fstab
...
bart:/home              /home                   nfs
defaults,rsize=8192,wsiz
e=8192,retry=5,soft,bg,intr     0 0
...
$ mount
...
bart:/home on /home type nfs
(rw,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,retry=5,soft,bg,intr,addr=192.168.0.3)
...

and on the nfs 'server':
$ more exports
/home (rw,no_root_squash)  # Site-wide home directories

any advice appreciated ...

Maybe it will fix a problem or two; maybe not. You will still be limited to one
POP account, and you will still have to log in to the news server manually,
I suspect. There are applications out there that will do it better, but they
take up lots more resources.

As for the upgrade: when using .tar files, you have to remove the older version
first. The newer one should accept most of your old settings, as stored in your
home directory, but in the past there have been problems with the address book
causing a crash.

Sorry, but that's the best we can do with the 4.xx Netscape.

I am having problems compiling the tulip.o module for my linksys etherfast
card. I have a fresh install of redhat 7.0 and have downloaded all of the
files from ftp://ftp.scyld.com/pub/network/tulip.html (pci-scan.h
pci-scan.c, kern_compat.h, and tulip.c).  The pci-scan.o module seems to
compile OK, but when I try to compile the tulip.c file I get the
following errors:

[root@localhost modules]# gcc -DMODULE -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c

I have compiled this module under redhat 6.2 with out a problem. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all;

Sorry, Iam running redhat 6.2. If I login as root on tty1 and login as
root on tty4, and setuid from tty4, then exit/reboot cause this.

As I was runng linuxconf on tty1 (to veiw the mail que[?]) and testing
users email account on tty2. So as I did not want to waste time
waiting for my old 486 to exit out of linuxconf then rerun it, I
relogin thru tty4.

Or what driver it uses since there isn't one for it in printtool.

This work on 6.2 not sure about 7.0

gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/path/to/module -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes
-O6 -c tulip.c `[ -f /usr/include/linux/modversions.h ] && echo

When I run ns-install to "upgrade", it asked me where I wanted to put it;
of course, I selected the directory where my old version was. The directory
where my netscape reside is /opt/netscape but the install still put some
plugins into /usr/local/netscape as it looked like part of netscape insist
that the plugins reside there.

One of the very strengths of zsh if not even its purpose
(maximum customizations, in contrast to bash allegedly concentrating
more on POSIX). But since 2.04 bash also has at least a programmable
completion; although i never have compared them (and a hint for the
archives: even bash comes with an example/ code directory)

The biggest problem with all these shells is always _switching_ between
them if one has gotten used to one ;-)

Set the I/O and IRQ with jumpers so the device does not conflict
with other devices in your box (watch for serial device conflict) -
say I/O = 0x300 and IRQ = 5.  Make sure /etc/modules.conf (or
/etc/conf.modules) has the lines

alias eth0 [module]
options io=0x300 irq=5

where [module].o is the driver for your network card (I don't know
what module drives that card - I have never owned a 3com product).
I use sis900.o and ne.o for my two ethernet cards.

Once that's done, you activate the card by, as root, typing
ifup eth0, or by setting ONBOOT=yes in the file

 /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

Here is the config script for my eth0 card:

DEVICE=eth0
USERCTL=no
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=none
BROADCAST=x.x.x.255
NETWORK=x.x.x.0
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
IPADDR=x.x.x.y
GATEWAY=x.x.x.z

You will need your numbers at x,y,z - it depends on what you are
using the card for. Once that is in place and the module is loaded,
type ifup eth0 (or once all works, "ONBOOT=yes" will activate the
device automatically at boot time). If you see no message like

 Delaying eth0 initilization

it's probably working. Type "ifconfig eth0" to see.

Do you have a /dev/hda12 in your /dev directory? Some distributions
done provide high-numbered partitions.

You can create the file if it doesn't exist with:

    $ mknod /dev/hda12 b 3 12

(as root).

That should only affect booting, not mounting.

Can you do an 'fdisk.vfat' or 'fdisk.msdos' on the partition? You just
want diagnostic output, you don't want to change the filesystem if you
can help it. dosfsk has no '-n' (no-changes) flag that I'm aware.

Subject: Kernel Panic CPUID

Hello,
 I am relatively new to Linux and am trying to configure a dual boot
(linux/win98) box on fairly current hardware.
 My system is as follows:

AK33 AMD Athlon 4x AGP ATX Motherboard
700Mhz AMD Athlon Processor
128MB PC133 SDRAM
WD 15.3gig  7200rpm HD
Diamond Viper NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 AGP Video Card
Aopen AW724 Yamaha Sound Card

 My HD is partitioned approximately like this.

hda1     7gig       FAT32
hda2     70meg    Linux Native    /boot
hda5     7gig        Linux Native    /
hda6     70meg    Linux Swap

 But, I think that the partitioning isn't a problem ( at least not as
far into the boot process as I have gotten ), but I don't know enough to
be certain of that. I kept the windows partition under the 8.4 gig bios
limit so as to boot using LILO. I get the LILO boot prompt, and typing
'DOS' allows windows to boot normally. However, typing 'Linux' gets me
to
                      Loading Linux .............
 and then it hangs up with the following text showing on the screen.

 LILO seems like it's getting as far as loading the kernel, but that the
kernel is choking on something. I'm thinking that this has something to
do with my newer hardware. According to the messages above, it seems to
hang on disabling the CPUID serial number, but I have no clue as to what
that is, how it relates to my hardware, or what to do about it. I have
visited several websites and this newsgroup, but have had no luck
finding any pertinent information. I would be very grateful for any
help/suggestions anyone can offer to get me past this roadblock.

Thanks in advance for your consideration of this problem. Rich
B.

can someone help a newbie?

i finally managed to get x running with my geforce2gts after
downloading the drivers from nvidia's website.

however, apparently the only thing starting is twm. i know i have
gnome and kde installed, but i'm not sure how to start them (i'm a
complete novice at this). like i said, when i type 'startx' the only
thing i get is a blank background with 3 terminal windows and a clock.
when i click on the desktop a popup menu says something about twm,
which is the only reason i know what it is that's running.

i'd like to know what i need to modify to have gnome start up
automatically when i type 'startx'.

here's my configuration:

pii-400
128M
Creative Annihilator 2 GTS

RedHat 6.1
kernel 2.2.12
