I was playing with my XF86Config file, trying to get a better
resolution, and somehow picked a synch rate my monitor cannot
handle. Now, I can't edit the file, because I can't find a
way to exit the GUI and work from a command prompt. (The login
screen is even GUI-ized, and I can't control the mouse enough
to pick the "safe login" feature either).
Is there a command key to exit the GUI and give me just a prompt?
Is there a way to boot without the GUI using lilo arguments?
Is there a way I could boot from a floppy, and mount the hard
drive separately?
Any other ideas would be appreciated VERY MUCH! It would be
nice if you could reply to my address in addition to posting.
Thanks,
aron fay

I think there is a hot key sequence that will stop X and drop you to a
command line. I don't remember what it is because I never use it.
Somebody will probably tell us...
But, at boot, when at the lilo prompt enter 'single' or '1', (depending
on your distribution) like...
lilo: linux single
That will put you in single user mode. Now make your changes and startX

I couldn't get my sound card (Diamond MX400) and SCSI adapter (TEKRAM)
with CD-ROM (on SCSI) work.
Besides, the ATAPI CD-ROM won't mount once I get into X. Before getting
into X, I can mount it.
Too much going on with the system. I guess I need to recompile the
Kernel. BTW, I installed RH6.1 dist ($1.95).
Any suggestions, thanx.

Hi James -
As far as I remember, in lilo.conf you can specify the amount of memory
for Linux via the kernel parameters:
In your case you should add the line
append="mem=384M"
in all sections that describe Linux boot images. At least for my 96M
system this did work (kernel 2.0.something).

I am trying to get PPP to connect to my ISP on system startup. I am
running a US Robotics 56K external modem on COM2 (tty1?). I have the
dialup configuration set to dial on startup. When I reboot, the modem
doesn't dial, and when I look at the modem properties, it says the modem
is connected. Typing /sbin/ifup ppp0 does nothing. Can anyone help me

Helpful bastard aren;t you.
The problem is that the old lilo assumed that your bios could not boot
up anything beyond 8GB so the partition containing /boot had to lie
entirely below that line on the disk. This was a good assumption until
about 2 years ago. Then computer bios's gained an extention which
allowed them to boot from beyond the 1024 cyl limit.
So if you have a new computer, you can either get the new lilo (probably
best to use a new distro for that) or make sure that the partition
containing /boot lies below the 1024 cyl limit. Eg, put a 4MB partiton
at the bottom of the disk containing just /boot.

Setting up Linux box's. Redhat 6.2 and 7.0.
Looking for a configuration/program that will log any 'touches'
to any port on the box.
Freebsd has the kernel setting via:
net.inet.tcp.log_in_vain
and
net.inet.udp.log_in_vain
That provides the functionality I want but as I said they are
Linux boxen not freebsd.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Mogens, it turns out that hdb is my internal IDE Zip 100. I found
that as long as there is a disk in the drive when I boot up I have no
problems. This seems a bit hokey. It would be nice to fix it so that
wasn't necessary. Some short history: when I bought the computer from
Dell, I had peculiar troubles in Win 95 with Norton Rescue. A lot of
investigation showed that contrary to what Iomega recommends, that the
BIOS had described the disk, instead of saying "None". When I changed
it to none, then Windows saw the disk as what it should be - complete
with sensing whether or not there's a disk there (and seeing it as a
removable disk). It seems that Redhat doesn't do that.

Eeek... I always save a copy of config files before I start fiddling
with them, so I can restore the old settings if I foobar something, e.g.
[root@zephyr]# cp /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config.save
> Is there a command key to exit the GUI and give me just a prompt?
Yes, CTRL-ALT-F1 will switch the screen to a text terminal login.
ALT-F7 to get back to X11
Once in text mode you can kill off the X11 stuff with the command:
[root@zephyr]# init 3
to switch to runlevel 3 (full network services, no gui).
> Is there a way to boot without the GUI using lilo arguments?
Yes, at the lilo "boot:" prompt type:
boot: linux 3
to start in runlevel 3 (full network services, no gui)

I can't boot into my linux box as of yesterday adn I have no

after the "LILO:" prompt.
"ran out of input space

I'm not sure if it's related to my install of OpenSSL, OpenSSH and ZLib.
I followed all directions carefully, but when I rebooted I got the above

I have a boot disk from my old kernel, 2.2.14 (I'm running 2.2.17 now).
I have no idea what to do or where to begin.

Previous suggestions should enable you to close/destroy/kill the
Netscape process. Any of these, however, will likely leave a 'lock'
file in your ~/.netscape directory which will prevent Netscape from
coming up cleanly next time. Delete the lock file to prevent this.

The following worked for me:
Put this in your ~/.Xdefaults:
xterm*vt100.translations: #override <Key>Delete: string(0x7f)
xterm*vt100.translations: #override <Key>BackSpace: string(0x08)
Alternatively, remove the similar lines from:
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTerm
It is these lines that seemed to have caused the problem in the first
place.

Redhat access network card before PCMCIA loads
I have a network pcmcia card in my notepad. I would like to network
card to get active at boot time, but I see that redhat 7.0 is trying to
active the network card before PCMCIA loads so the active does not
work. Can someone please tell me a way around this??

thanks. Unfortunately, I already have rules to explicitly allow packets
from my ipaddress to the vpn server to go out with proto50, and back. I
also tried specifying "-p all" as well, but to no avail. I have mostly been
trying with scripts based on ipfwadm, which in rh 7.0 is just a script to
convert to ipchains. Perhaps there are bugs there? I think I did try raw
ipchains commands at one point too, with no luck. I tried setting all my
default policies to accept, then log EVERY rule that rejects or denys.
Still no luck. THe packets are disappearing into thin air.
thanks again for your response, I will checkout freshmeat.

If mkbootdisk does not work try:
$> dd if=/path_to_kernel_image of=/dev/fd0 bs=8192
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
typically /boot/vmlinuz
