search freshmeat.net for cd-rippers and mp3 encoders/decoders
I use bladeenc for mp3 encoding, xmms to playback, and cdparanoia for
getting tracks of the cd. But there are many other options.

In the top level make file, change gcc to kgcc. Do a "make mrproper;
make xconfig; and so on"

It works for me (on the standard 2.2.16 kernel). I had bad luck with
the 2.2.17 kernel and nvidia drivers... Take care.

Go to directory /boot/grub and run the command: sh install.sh
The file install.sh should be in the directory.
If necessary you can first edit the file menu.lst.

Thanks for your help, but I found some sort of the same thing yesterday, and
I try to install it again, I put ~100-200Mb for "Swap", ~4-20 for "/boot",
and the rest for "Native" but it still got problem, it still says " boot
partition too big" and got the line with "/boot" partition in red. then I
can see I can click on "next", I click on it, but it can't continue, just
restart my machine. Does anyone know why it will say "boot partition too
big"?!

Hi - I'm a relative newbie to Linux, running Mandrake 7.1 and loving it....
My problem is that every time I try to use xman, the 'getting started'
screen is legible but all the man pages are gibberish, and when i check out
the messages coming from xman its an endless list of 'illegal input

'ftpconversions'.
The man pages are fine when viewed from the shell. Any help with this would
be humongously appreciated.

A very easy way to check is to put vga=ask in the lilo.conf file.
That way, you can scan for all your valid values when linux starts up.

G'luck!

I also had this problem. I noticed that there were some extra commas in the
httpd.conf file when generated from Linuxconf. This has only happened to me
on Redhat 6.2. I took the following steps to resolve it:

- stop your Apache webserver

    /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd stop

- rename or delete your original httpd.conf
When you execute the re-install apache does not overwrite the .conf files
if they exist. So delete or rename your existing httpd.conf

- force an install of apache
            rpm --force --install apache-1.3.x.x

- Manually make the changes to the .conf file. If you look under the 'main'
area, uncomment and change the Servername to suit. - restart your server

    /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd start

This will allow you to log onto your webserver. You can customise your
set-up manually after this as the .conf file is well documented or by
reading the Apache manual.

I used abcde (A Better Cd Encoder) which unfortunately is command line.
It strings together a number of apps into a shell script (I think) which
goes out to the Net to download the CDDB information using wget (an
application I recommend you have anyway for it's general usefulness) and
then CDparanoia to rip the WAV files off the CD and then LAME (I think)
to encode them to MP3s. Takes about 3/4hour to an hour per CD on a P3
600. I too use Xmms to playback the MP3s.

Hellu there,

I did upgrade my machine from RedHat 6.2. to RedHat 7.0 and have some
problems:
1: First of all I dont' understand the names that appear, for example
smb.conf.rpmsave ?, why does this rpmsave extension means and how is this
file used ? and what about my original smb.conf, which is renamed to this
rpmsave version ?

2: smbd problems. This problem is related to the above. I don't seem to get
this working as the computer doesn't appear anymore in my explorer desktop,
while the configuration is the same ? Even if I copy the rpmsave version
back to the smb.conf it doesn't work

3: Swat problems. Swat doesn't work anymore, while the files /etc/services
and /etc/inetd.conf contain the required lines. ONLY the files inetd.conf
has been renamed to inetd.conf.rpmsave!!
In the log file messages appears: "Swat disabled, removing"
Then I like to know where it is disabled ??? someone has an idea ??

4: Last: I am not able to connect my Xclient (XWinPro) anymore to the linux
machine ?? (before the upgrade it worked !!) . For this to work you need to
edit the file /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config. However this file has been renamed to
xdm-config.rpmsave, and even if I rename it back, I have the same problem.!!

Please some advice how to solve this,
Ed Bras

Well since appearently it's not that easy for you to find the info, I'll
try to describe it once more:
The problem is not that the /boot partition is too big. I know it's
misleading info. The actual problem is that (a part) of the /boot
partition lies above cylinder 1024 of your HDD. Since (older, but still
a lot) BIOS'es are uncapable of adressing data above cylinder 1024, your
system would be unbootable if you would locate /boot beyond that 1024
cyl. limit.

Thus the RH installer refuses to let you choose a /boot partition that
lies beyond cylinder 1024. It responds with the misleading message: boot
partition too big

The easiest solution is to make a /boot partition that lies entirely
below this 1024 cylinder limit. (This limit is usually around 8 GB) So
you probably need a tool like Partition Magic (not-free) FIPS
(primitive, but free) or GNU parted (get it at www.gnu.org) to shrink
your windows partition to make some room for /boot below cyl. 1024

After that make /boot *below* cylinder 1024, and you'll be able to
continue the install

I was told (by RedHat support) that the support for ipsec-VPN masquerading
was not compiled into the kernel that comes with RedHat 7.0, and
furthermore, it was also not compiled into a moldule. I was told that I
could re-compile the kernel to add in this support. My question is, since
this kernel can already load modules on demand, can't I just compile a small
portion of the code to build a binary module that will add the ipsec-masq
support? Or, will it be more of a pain than just running thru the config
program, answering the questions, and building the entire kernel and module
set?

If anyone knows the details of what files I would need to build just a small
module to support ispsec-masq, I would appriciate it.

thanks,

You might want to remove the "#" before "noauth" in /etc/ppp/options
(not sure if the file is in that location in your distribution...)

GRIP is a nice GUI for bladeenc and cdparanoia
