The one without the 'rpmsave' on the end. This is generally a clue that
something in the configuration might have changed somehow, eg the syntax
is different or somesuch, or new options are available. I would suggest
not renaming the old ones (with rpmsave) to the new one for this reason.
But hand copy any old config options into the new file.

When I look in the /etc/ppp/options file all it says is

Lock

Ive looked through a bunch of config-files but cant find anyone with a
noauth setting

If someone has stumpled over a file with this setting in RH 6.1, dont

Subject: HELP! ttyS0, external modem problem
Date: Wed, 11 Oct 2000 17:06:28 +0100

Hello

So, here is the problem: I first installed SuSE 6.3 using a standard
kernel, and the modem worked fine. But the soundcard didn't. Then I had to
re-configure and recompile the kernel (I've never done it myself
before...), I read all those dox about isapnp, but eventually I found out
that the soundcard (ONLY) works if no isapnp.conf file is present and that
linux sets up IRQs, IOs and DMAs correctly (exectly in accordance with
Win... yeah, I had it before on this machine, and I still have this disk
in case of trouble...). But now my modem does not work. So, either:
1) I misconfigured my kernel and either did not include support for it or
included something that I shouldn't really...
or
2) the soundcard and the modem conflict. However a quick check did not
show any conflicts. But maybe I was not doing a right check...

Now, could anybody, please, tell me shat EXACTLY components I MUST
configure my kernel for on a standalone computer, having, among optional
hardware ONLY a soundcard and a modem (including PPP networking, of
course). And how EXACTLY can I check if there are any conflicts? And do I
REALLY need isapnp.conf? When I did try to use it I only got some conflict
messages...

dmesg (boot-time messages) show 'approximately' the same ttyS* records for
both kernels, but at different stages... I am away from that computer now,
so, can't tell exactly.

Can I find out how the kernel on the cd was configured?

Please HELP!

Date: Wed, 11 Oct 2000 16:24:57 GMT

I've been running my Intel-based RH 6.0 server just fine for >1 year,
without a crash - ostly administering it by telneting into the
machine. On the rare occasion when I need (or prefer) to use
Linuxconf, I've been using Gnome or equivalent just fine - on a
reboot, the basic RH splash screen and login screen come up fine.

Until now - for some reason, if I reboot the machine now, the GUI
doesn't come up at all. The system initializes just fine, and does all
its usual server things just fine, but it refuses to bring up the GUI.
The only thing I've done to the machine in the last 2-3 months is
update some of the RPM from the RH site. No hardware changes, no
application additions (other than the RPM updates noted) - nothing.
Thats about it - as far as I know, the GUI problem is recent.

Any suggestions? While for 95% fo what I use the machine for I can
telnet in just fine, I need the GUI for a couple of things, and can;t
figure out what to try.

Thanks in advance...

After moving from Iowa to Tennessee, I find that my /home

and an image1.raw file. e2fsck claims there is no problem
with the file structure, even if I force it to use a different
superblock when checking the disk. The image1.raw file contains
all of my user files. How can I recover it?

Yes, "none" shouldn't be here.
Seems configure reused the result (output) from an earlier test, "none".
(I guess it's not a hardcoded bug in that configure script.)
If this doesn't happen with another configure from another major
package (say bash), this one is a bit buggy.
Or immediately try an older version of gimp if you don't insist in
an 1.1.27 feature.

Should add that what isn't coming up is the RH login/password
graphical screen - all I get is a grey background, with an 'X' cursor
in the middle of the screen - the cursor respons to the mouse, but not
much else.

Tried something else - brought the system up in console, command line,
by entering linux 3 at the LILO prompt. OK - logged in as a particular
user, and then tried bringing up the Gnome desktop with startx.

Lo and behold, worked fine. So, the problem seems to be when it tries
to bring up the graphical login screen - it absolutely refuses to.

I'm wondering if there is a switch somewhere to turn this screen off
(security?) which I'd very much like to turn back on!

Thanks!

First question is, do you get a valid logon prompt, and can you log on
normally? Or, does the machine automatically start in graphic mode and
hang?

Then, how are you starting X? startx?

Did the machine normally boot into GUI? If yes, and you can logon
normally, check /etc/inittab for the line that tells it which run level
should be executed on initdefault. Run level 5 is gui.

Hi
This is caused by a pppd-2.3.10 finding a default route on the eth0
interface. The error message has be clarified in ppp-2.3.11.
Fix this by:
editing /etc/sysconfig/network and
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
and deleting everything after the equal sign for GATEWAY= and
GATEWAYDEV=
If you are using the GUI admin tool, remove the bogus gateway then
verify
that the above files are fixed.

Subject: enlightenment crashes with new X server

hi

i'm using slackware 7.1 and i've decided to upgrade my X server from
3.3.6 to 4.0.1.
The X server successfully installs, but when i try to run enlightenment
(0.16.4), it reports the error:

"Xlib: This server does not support the shape expansion.
Either your Xserver is too old or misconfigured.

When compiling the Xserver i performed the routine make World and make
install. I used this server on
an older redhat 6.0 system with enlightenment 0.16.3 and i had no
problems.

What's the problem?

The latter - I do not get the graphical (GUI-based) login screen at
all.

It is set in the /etc/inittab file to start with run level 5.

If I start in run level 3, and then login from the command line and
then run 'startx', the Gnome desktop comes up just fine. I first get
the grey background, witht he 'X' cursor, and then enlightenment fires
up and all is well.

What is NOT happening is that the graphical login screen is NOT coming
up - this is where it hangs.

Eric:

I've always done my OS upgrades by ftp'ing everything under the RedHat
dir (like instimage, RPMS, base) and booting from boot.img on a floppy and
upgrading. This time I'm missing something and wouldn't mind trying the
ISO's. I don't have a cd-writer so maybe this is impossible but thought I'd
ask: Is there a way (once I've downloaded the ISO's into some linux dir) to
access them as if they're mounted cd's and perform an upgrade from there?
The obvious problem for me is that they're not where the upgrade floppy's
are looking for them and I've got no idea how to boot from an ISO mounted
image that's not on cd-rom.

The folks over at SourceForge have improved the Aureal driver, and
their modified version is supposed to work much better. You can get
the modified driver, and information abvout it, here:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/aureal/

I am currently having trouble getting it installed under RedHat 7, but
that may be a problem just with that distribution. The SourceForge
driver apparently works great with RedHat 6.2, and many other
distributions.

PS - Anyone know how to make the driver work under RedHat 7?

RH will partition your disk automatically if you select an install mode. Or
it has a custom partitioning utility which is pretty simple to use.

To my surprise I found RN7 uses xinetd instead of inetd by default. A
completely different animal. You have to configure the xinetd.conf file. But
I did a new install not an upgrade.
See if xinetd is running instead of inetd.
