The next question then becomes, which GUI are you using. Gnome or KDE?
If you follow the links, beginning in /etc/inittab , the last line
probably is something like..
x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
So, follow /etc/X11/prefdm and see where the link goes. Mine goes
to /usr/bin/kdm to start KDE.

How did you get it to load? Do you have to setup the card IRQ somewhare? Is

Mine was the standard RH default to Gnome (gdm). For grins (and to see
if it is simply a matter of the gm file being wonky, I reset it to
kdm.
i.e., set the symbolic link for prefdm to /usr/bin/kdm insted of
/usr/bin/gdm
We shall see.

Well, I tried point prefdm to kdm rather than gdm and it worked
perfectly.
Hmm...guess gdm has up and died on my (not sure how/why, but probably
somehow related to RPM upgrades).
No matter...at least I can run linuxconf now.

RH does the individual configuration in xinetd.d/*. Each service has
it's own file. When upgrading the previous inetd.conf is converted to
this new format. Each service can be enabled/disabled with this line:
disable = no
(set to yes to disable)
man xinetd. Really seems quite flexible from what I see so far.

It was addressed sometime in the past. RFC2203, which specifies the
RPCSEC_GSS security flavour for ONC RPC (which NFS sits on top of), is
dated September 1997. RFC2623 goes into more detail about applying
RPCSEC_GSS to NFS.
Solaris has implemented this since 2.6 I think, with Diffie Hellman
public key encryption as the security mechanism. 2.8 (maybe 2.7 too?)
can also use Kerberos v5 as the security mechanism.
The group (at the University of Michigan?) doing the Sun-sponsored
NFSv4 implementation for Linux were implementing RPCSEC_GSS as a part
of that.

Does your kernel have sound support? Try `modprobe -la |more' and
look for xxx/misc/sound.o. If it exists, make sure to do a `modprobe
sound'. You can also run linuxconf. If you have installed the alsa
and sound system, you can turn these services on when booting.
Look in the /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/ for files that say Kxxalsasound and Kxxsound.
These are bad. You need Sxxalsasound and Sxxsound. This means that the
services are started at runlevel 3. There is and rc5.d directory too,
this is used if you boot with an `X' login screen. If you have no sound
support in the kernel or modules, you may have to recompile.
[start]
# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
options snd snd_major=116 snd_cards_limit=1
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-emu10k1
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
[end]
I have kernel 2.2.17 and the same alsa modules. Make sure you create
the devices with ./snddevices script in the alsa-driverxxx/dev
directory. I found no need to run the plug and play stuff.

rtfm, the syntax is ln -s source linkname
ln -s /usr/src/linux-2.4.0 /usr/src/linux

Subject: port not open for incoming mail.
Date: Wed, 11 Oct 2000 19:31:43 GMT
I have been installing mandrake 7.1 over and over again. I'm not sure
what I have changed in the way i do it, but it seems every time I
install it now my e-mail can be sent but not received. Most of my
other ports are closed. I can't ftp, pop, telnet, ssh into my
machine. I'm guessing that snmp is closed also and that's why I can
send mail but not receive it. How do I open and close ports? Is it
IPChains? Is the firewall running and keeping all the ports closed?
What I really need to know is how to open and close ports. Any
information or advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
One other little snag. Recently when I install 7.1 I get this wierd
thing going on in my machine. When I install, I format the drives
each time so i doubt I made a mistake once and the machine is
"remembering" the settings. But when I install my 3com 3c905b-tx card
everything takes. But when I shutdown and startup I always get this
error reffering to ippp0. In linuxconf there is a second adaptor
there with info in it. Granted it is not enabled and only has a net
device and IP, but when linux tries to load and unload I always get
errors. The IP address is always 192.168.100.1 and that is no where
near the IP I'm using for this machine.
Is this machine somehow remembering a mistake I made earlier, even
though I format each install? What is ippp0? I know ppp is point to
point protocal, but what does that have to do with my connection? I
do have a second linksys NIC card installed on this machine although i
have not installed drivers or anything for it. there is no reference
to it in linux, but it is sitting in a PCI slot. Would that
contribute to my problem? I started noticing that ippp0 error about
the same time that my installs stopped going so smoothly( ports being
closed upon first boot up). But I can't swear that they showed up at
the same time. Are they related?
Any and all advise is welcome and appreciated.
Thanks for your help,
Buschman

Windows installs on hde and doesn't touch another drive? I doubt it.
I think that Linux should be able to use a second controller. You
can use the drive, but you probably have to put a partition on the hda
or hdb drive if you with to use LILO to boot. You could use a floppy
to boot linux if you don't like this.
It is a limitation of the BIOS that LILO use to load the kernel. You
must have a linux partition in the first 1024 cylinders of hda or hdb.
With newer BIOSes, you might be able to use hdc and hdd. If you have
installed Linux on hda, hdb, hdc, hdd and can not read an hde that is
different.
Also you give no details of exactly what software you are using. Is this
Redhat X.xx etc. Do you know the kernel version?
