Linux Gurus:
Thank you very kindly for your suggestions. I have tried the active
partition item and it did not work.
I failed to tell you that when I installed LILO (at the installation
of the Caldera Linux), I installed it to the natvie linux partition
/dev/hda3. I was not sure that would work, but it was an option in
the Caldera Installation and it all worked fine for several weeks.
When viewing the disk with the MSDOS FDISK, it showed that the active
partition was the first partition (/dev/hda1). After changing it to
partition 3 (/dev/hda3) and rebooting, the error message about
"Missing operating system" was still there. Then going back into
FDISK (MSDOS) changed the active partition back to 1 (/dev/hda1).
After rebooting this, it boots back into Win98.
I am thinking that when Win98 did this thing to the disk, it some how
corrupted something on the linux partition (/dev/hda3) such that it
is necessary to run fsck. The reason I think this may be the case,
is after booting with the emergency disk created after the fact
(described in Caldera's FAQ), I get an odd error that says something
like "Kernel Panic:VFS:unable to mount root fs on 03:03". This
suggests to me that it is having difficulty reading the linux partition
and it needs to run fsck. Another item that suggests this is that
while in Win98, trying to read the linux partition with the tool
explore2fs.exe reports a read error.
Do you have other suggestions about how I might recover the Linux data.
While it was nice to boot back to Win98, I really need the linux stuff.
I guess next time I will install GRUB instead of LILO.
Thanks for your help.

I have RH7 on several boxes. Notice that for some reason the boxes with
SCSI drives take forever (like two minutes) to get past "loading
linux........." prompt which happens immediately after LILO starts. IDE
boxes are booting at least 3-4 times faster. Anybody know what processes
are running at that point and how to tweak them?

First - I recommend NEVER using DOS fdisk on a hard drive which
is something other than a DOS only hard drive (in fact - I think
one should use Linux fdisk to partition DOS hard drives!). If
one lets DOS fdisk write to a hard drive which has Linux and DOS,
it will make the Linux partition non-bootable.
It looks like this is what happened, and the "Linux Rescue Disk"
is NOT particular to the installed Linux system. Is it? Or is
it an image that boots into the Caldera installer??

In fact, if you want to make real money in Linux, you should forget that
you're trying to make real money in Linux. With some exceptions,
anything you write in Linux should run on other Unix systems too,
assuming that you're vaguely careful and are prepared to spend some time
on cross-platform testing. For very little effort, you can expand your
target audience by quite a sizeable factor.

Yes sound.o is there as well as various emu10k1 .o files. linuxconf has
nothing to do with sound in it. This might be changed for RH7

There are no such scipts in any rc dir. The alsasound script comes with the
distribution where is the sound script? But I think everything is getting
loaded at boot, it is just failing.

chmod a-x /etc/rc.d/init.d/ypserv will prevent it from running, but show
it as failed during boot. The preferred method is to simply remove the
symlink for it from /etc/rc.d/rc#.d where # is your runlevel (3 for
console, or 5 for GUI X) so it will not even try to run.
Or if you do not intend to use ypserv, uninstall it with one of the
package tools or rpm.

What smtp server are you using? Mandrake installed postfix on my system,
but I could not configure it to work. So I removed postfix and installed
sendmail, which works fine without any configuration (because I have a

If you are reseting or adding to the path, are you exporting it?
PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin
export PATH
or more simply:
export PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin
But you probably want to to that from .bash_profile if you are appending
to the path or the appended path will be repeated in subshells.

Hi, I have a problem..
I installed redhat 7.0 and had *everything* working perfectly.
graphics, sound, nic, etc.. but the other day, i booted up and it didnt

Anyway, i had to format my computer for other reasons, and i reinstalled

linux still wont pick up my nic or my sound. Anyone know how to setup a
D-LINK dfe-538tx ethernet card? (its on IRQ 10)
sound card is on IRQ 9

No basic difference. Both are Linux/Unix.

Subject: dual boot large disk problem
Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 02:38:48 GMT
I'm trying to install RedHat 6.2 on a machine that already has Windows
98 running on it. The machine has one 42 GB disk. I ran fips to
shrink the 42 GB partition down to 18 GB and plan to place linux in the
remaining space.
Unfortunately I encountered a problem at the install stage that
specifies the partitions. I tried to create a linux native parition
for "/" of size 2000 MB, but the installer complained that the
partition was too big. I believe it is complaining because it thinks
the windows partition is too big (and hence the boot partition can't be
placed at the front of the disk).
I don't want to wipe my disk and place a boot partition within the
first ~500 MB of the disk. Surely there must be a way around this
problem.
Any help or advice?
Thank you.

posted before, gathered various tips from other sources and tried
everything i know how. here goes: i installed 6.2 from scratch (after
messing with 7.0), had 1 nic in the computer at this time, a realtek
8029as. pnp is off in bios and the nic comes up fine with rp-pppoe.
connects, but when i run adsl-setup it says the card info, irq 10 right
now with no other nics present. everything is golden. now, i want to
add another nic. i have 2 choices. (all these cards are pci), a
kingston kne111tx/100b (using tulip) and a 3com 3c905b-tx (using
3c59x). i first put the kingston card in, rh detected it on boot,
configured, did NOT specify network settings then. logged in as root,
ifconfig shows only lo. ifconfig eth1 shows the 3com card, and
adsl-start works. i goto netcfg and enter the ip info. activate, stop
dsl and restart. still works... looks good.... so far i see eth1/eth2
and the dsl is working. i restart, try to run adsl-start, everything is
as before, but no lights flash on the modem. does not connect. aliases
are set right in conf.modules. no options, just alias eth0 ne2k-pci and
eth1 3c59x.
i remove the 3com card, remove the config, dsl works again, i tried the
same deal with the other nic, the kingston one. works fine for a
while.... then i reboot, bam, cant connect to the internet. what is
up? i have reinstalled the drivers, reformatted.... it all worked at
one point, but i haven't taken the time to config samba for ics yet
since on reboot it all fails again.... any advice? PLEASE help....

I rebuild my linux system from the gzipped tar balls
Try to have tar ball less then 2G.
Be careful if you have to make a gzip and tarball of a big directory
file, you might get a broken pipe or core dump.
Don't make a tar ball of /proc directory.
# cd /
# tar cvfz /backup_directory/bin.tar.gz bin
# tar cvfz /backup_directory/boot.tar.gz tar

rpm has saved your original file (and so .rpmsave). You should compare the tw files
