Are you sure he was talking about DNS?
If you are running SAMBA, your server may be trying to become
the 'master' for the network for Windows name resolution system
called WINS.
The SAMBA docs should tell you haw to turn this feature off.

If he used the default makefile that came with RH7.0 it should have
called kgcc by default without any changes being made. I was worried
about this myself so I recompiled the kernel and modules without any
problems at all.
I wonder exactly what the problem really was, did he do a "make
mrproper" before building anything ?

I walk upon a path darkly... Can't specificly answer as different flavors of
Linux have different files for this. But, your .init file for you login
directory is a good start as is /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions (for RH). Good
Idea to get something like 'Red Hat Linux Bible' from IDG books or
equivalent for your system. Look up path and export

Enter your root password to repair the filesystem.
# fsck /dev/hda4 # /dev/hda4 is my linux partition to be repaired.
When prompted, enter the defaults.
Cross your finger and hope it comes back.
If not :(, install your redhat CD and do an upgrade (not server, workstation or
custom install).
Pick a small program to upgrade (i.e. linux game)

Perms are ok. THis is something basic. The driver will not load. Going back
to the original messages:
Oct 12 00:19:30 mjmsys kernel: snd: EMU10K1 soundcard #1 not found or device

Oct 12 00:19:30 mjmsys nsmod:

My understanding is that the OS should assign an IRQ for this type of card.
Is there some gotcha in the build instructions?

I was told by a fellow user Red Hat 7 comes with all the drivers for

Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2000 02:21:07 GMT
I logged in to my RH6.2 mail and web server for the first time in weeks
today, but the telnet login is now inoperable. I get the RH62 message, but
no login prompt. I then went over to the physical machine, and a similar
thing, login: but any input just returns the login: prompt.
I checked webmin, and that still works, as do the web serrvices, everything
seems to be in order except the login daemon, or the shell or something I
don't quite know enough about linux yet to diagnose.
I figured what the heck, the machine hasn't been rebooted in months. I
issued the reboot signal, and the machine comes back with the same malady.
What is going on, and how can I fix it? RH gives a linuxconf option (I did
install the latest linuxconf rpms), but I don't forsee any magic daemon
fixes in that interface.
Please reply with any ideas ASAP. Fortunately, the intended functions seem
to be uninterrupted, but I'm anxious to login all the same...

Something like that happened to me once (with RH 6.0) and I concluded
(perhaps wrongly?) I'd been hacked. It was on the machine I use all the
time, and I was actually doing some configurations tests and frequent
reboots at the time, so I noticed it the next time I rebooted, and
couldn't login; perhaps I stopped the hack in midstream.
Another newsgroup reader suggesting rebooting in single-user mode (e.g.,
type "linux single" at the LILO prompt, or use a boot floppy). I
discovered that the login program (/bin/login ?) had been altered, and
some of the /etc files also. There's a command option to "rpm" that
checks all the installed packages to see if something's changed (I think
it's "rpm -Va" but don't quote me; I don't have access to my home
machine now... cable internet is down).
*IF* that's the case, the best solution is probably a clean re-install.
It's what I did, but that was on my own personal workstation only ab out
two weeks after the original install. I'm most certainly *NOT* an
expert, so don't conclude from what I'm saying that you've necessarily
been hacked or that you necessarily need to re-install, but that might
be the a POSSIBILITY.
In any case, I'm fairly certain that "LILO: linux single" is the way to
get in to see what's going on. I think, however, that your mail and web
servers will not function while you're in this mode, so you may want to
take that into account when deciding if/when to try this.

gcc-2.95.*).

No, that's the "static" equivalent. To build shared libraries, you
probably need to configure with "--enable-shared".

Carlos-
My situation is very similar to yours. I am trying to boot Red Hat 7.0
using the NT boot loader, but LILO hangs at "LI." Nothing new there.
However, previous to that, I tried using PowerQuest BootMagic to boot Win2k
and Red Hat, and I encountered the exact same problem. I don't have any
experience with System Commander, but I doubt it could be too different from
boot magic. I don't think this is a problem with the NT loader, but rather
with some property of our hardware setup. I know this doesn't solve the
problem; just thought another perspective might help.

Assume Xvnc's path is /sbin/Xvnc. Temporary solution: type at your terminal
prompt -
export PATH=$PATH:/sbin/
This will append the /sbin/ directory to your current path until you logout. To
make it more permanent, add the above line to your .bashrc or perhaps your
.bash_profile file (these are usually found in your home directory and are
invisible normally. Try the command - "ls -a" without the quotes, of course).

If you use the bash shell then system wide environment settings
(for all users on the system) should be found in two files:
/etc/profile --> System wide environment and startup programs (PATH)
/etc/bashrc --> System wide functions and aliases
Custom settings for an individual user are found in that
user's home directory in the cooresponding "hidden" files:
/home/jim/.bash_profile --> Sys wide env. and startup programs (PATH)
/home/jim/.bashrc --> System wide functions and aliases
note: "ls -a" will list all files (even if hidden)
I usualy put most stuff into the system wide files unless only
one user should have the settings.
Hope this helps!

Take this with a grain of salt. The MBR is unrelated to the 1024 cyl
limit. The MBR is the first thing on the disk which can be either the
Windows MBR or LILO (or LILO could be on any of the first 4 partitions).
There is also nothing that says the first partition has to be FAT, I
happen to have a couple of 16 MB Linux /boot partitions first (to boot
different Linux versions), and then Win98se.
However, there is a 1024 cyl limit for current Linux distributions (a new
LILO available separately can get around that). Bascially LILO and /boot
have to be entirely below the 1024 cyl limit.
On a large drive ( >8 MB using LBA) you need to shrink Windows down to not
more than 1022 cyl, so you have at least 1 cyl (~16 MB) under cyl 1024 for
Linux /boot. The rest of Linux can go anywhere and you can create an
additional logical FAT partition if you need it, as long as the extended
partition is a suitable type (type f instead of Extended)
