Hi

I got a problem with a service not starting at boot time under RedHat 6.2.
I looked in the /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/ directory and I saw links for the various
services available (located as scripts in /etc/rc.d/init.d). I gather that
link names starting with S meant that the service will be started at boot
time and link names starting with K will not, but there is a number after
the S or K those interest I cannot guess. Does someone know what this number
means ? I guess my problem has something to do with that since there are two
links in rc3.d pointing to my non-starting service, both names beginning
with S but with different numbers after.

Thanks

Christophe.

the number is used to know in what sequence start/stop the varuous
services, this prevent to start (for instance) nfs before network
and so on...

This way your service should be started at least once. Try to start
it manually calling the start script (you must be root) and check
if it complain for something. Check also /var/log/messages.

The Abit KT7A is perfectly supported, I currectly run a KT7-RAID and it
works like a charm (even overclocked - in fact, linux was running more
stable than Windows when overclocked :).
ATA should be supported, not sure you will be able to work in ATA100 though
(even if I'm not sure it makes a difference :). ATA66 is supported for sure.
There exist a supported hardware list somewhere on the net, probably can be
found at http://www.linuxdoc.org.

> Windows. My question is simply: Is it really worth the trouble ?
*MY* answer is YES ! :)
Today I don't even have Windows installed, everything I need (almost :) is
running under linux. KDE 2.1 is a wonderfull desktop environment, I don't
feel too far away from windows (interface wise) while at the same time
running on a steady linux installation...
I'm running LFS (www.linuxfromscratch.org) and am very happy with it, I got
only what I installed, no more lost weight software... But that's probably
a step further from installing your first distribution...

If you have the courage and the envy to learn and continue giving linux a
try, I wish you the best luck...
And remember : there's always someone to help you (if you read the manual
first - RTFM ;)

Backup your .config file in the kernel source directory, and do a 'make
mrproper' This will clean out any garbage. Copy back in the .config file,
do a 'make depend' 'make bzImage' 'make modules' 'make modules_install' and
install the kernel normally.

You probably have some bad header files someplace, and you should start off
with a "fresh" kernel source.

Hope this helps,

Bruce

Have you run :

root:/usr/src/linux-2.4.2# make modules &&
root:/usr/src/linux-2.4.2# make modules_install

And as Gene said, have you installed the latest modutils with it ?

Third, have you run depmod -a ? (only after you've done the first 2 steps).

Info : there is an option in the kernel that enable/disable the opportunity
to load modules not compiled with the current kernel. Check it out too.

Hope it helps,

Your XF86Config is probably correctly set (I haven't read it), but your
error is a network error, not a graphic card error. You'll find the log at
/var/log/XFree86.?.log. Anyway, to me it doesn't seem the error is due to
your XF86Config file, but more of a network configuration error... Have you
got a localhost IP address ? (I'm no expert in X net config...).
If you still have an other distro installed in another partition, have a
look at it's network configuration files, et check your actual ones, see
how they match...

Do yourself a big favour and start reading about ssh.
And when you're ready, download openssh and install it,
and then disable telnet.

Linux fdisk to remove the partitions, and fdisk /mbr to
remove lilo from the mbr (or lilo -u before remove the
partitions), the re-partition the disk and install
whatever you want.

Roman, as far as I know, wvdial works better than chat.
If you want to stay with chat then look into the chat connect
script you're using (/etc/ppp/dialup) - it may have a problem.
But I would suggest the following: see if you have an existing
wvdial config file (/etc/wvdial.config I think) - browse through
and find the section you need, lets say its called "my-isp".
Then change the "connect..." line in your /etc/ppp/options file
to
    connect "/usr/bin/wvdial --chat my-isp"

(the --chat option makes wvdial run as a chat replacement).
You should also be aware that recent versions of pppd do not
replace an existing default route, so you may have to add a line
to your ppp startup script to delete any existing default route.

Tony,

edit the smb.conf (by default this file lives in /usr/local/samba/lib) if
necesary, then issue a kill -HUP to the smbd daemon. You may have a nice
script to use also, depending on which UNIX you've got. So either:

        ps -eaf |grep smbd
        kill -HUP <pid for smbd>

                OR

        /etc/init.d/samba stop
        /etc/init.d/samba start

something like this should do the trick.

Is your card supported by alsa? IIRC SuSE6.4 didn't have alsa but 7.1 uses
it as the default sound driver system. try the oss drivers from the 6.4 CDs
(not the trial one but the older 'free' one).

Heuu, are you absolutely sure ? I have a few devices myself, and my 2.4.2
kernel is about 730Kb...

If you can't reduce it by tweaking (I guess you should be able to... check
out the scsi reporting options for example, those take loads of kernel
space), just put your drivers in module format.

Indeed, although the 6.0 should be a little better rendering-wise
(crash-wise, it's still a Netscape app, they better fire some coders and
hire some real ones...).

Two solutions to my eyes :

1. Use KDE 2.1, Konqueror 2.1 is just great. Renders almost all my pages
like Internet Explorer, runs JavaScript (when the server doesn't try to
test the browser, coz of course Konqueror isn't specified in the server
conf...), runs Java and I can even view some flash pages because Konqueror
uses the Netscape plug-ins architecture (still crashy, but KDE is updated
continuously, only a few weeks between each version :).

All in one, since KDE 2.1 is out I haven't rebooted under Windows (I was
still browsing under windows...). In a matter of fact, I have no more
Windows on my disk because KDE 2.1 is the desktop environment I needed...
Maybe not all the tools are there yet, but the KDevelop coding environment
is amazing too so I'll probably code what I don't have available ;)

2. I heard NeoPlanet was preparing a browser for linux, based on Mozilla's
latest version (not like Netscape, who once again couldn't wait for the
final release - past repeats itself so much - remember HTML 4.0 and
Netscape 4.0 ?). So it should be able to render pages nicely, but in a much
more stable way than Netscape. It's not out yet, no mention of it on their
site, but the promisses looked good to me... I just hope they've not given
up on the project.

I understand, those b*tches at Microsoft surely know how to make an
appealing browser (and how to kill young companies, but that's another
question ;)

You will need to setup a firewall, you can use linux for this or openbsd or
freebsd or whatever. Then you can put a server on the lan to do mail, web,
ftp, etc (or multiple servers) and set the firewall to port forward to the
servers. Also, the information below on /etc/sysconfig/network wont work on
slackware. that i s redhat/mandrake. For slack, look in the /etc/rc.d
direcory and some file in there should have the info for the ip address
do cd /etc/rc.d
grep ifconfig * to find out which file it is

No, you don't need to re-install Linux. Just edit /etc/lilo.conf, run
lilo, and transfer the boot sector to a Windows partition with a command
like this:

dd if=/dev/hda6 of=/path/to/windows/dir/boot.lnx bs=512 count=1

You'll need to adjust the if= value to match the Linux boot partition,
and of course the of= value. (If necessary, you can store the file on a
floppy for transfer to Windows.)

Most Linuxes use an installed file database, so re-installing the OS
without re-installing applications will lose you a benefit of the
system -- namely, the ability to check what's installed and perform
easy upgrades. This applies only to applications installed via RPM or
Debian packages, though; stuff you compile yourself or install from
tarballs doesn't have these entries. Many of these programs go in
/usr/local, so some people put /usr/local on a separate partition.
There are also other arguments for splitting /usr as a whole off of /,
and for splitting off other directories, as well. This discussion
quickly turns into a rather heated debate once started, though.
