The fix is to re-compile the kernel with parallel port support.
Read the HOWTO for full details, but the process is something like this:
cd /usr/src/linux
make xconfig # the option for parallel port support is in one of the menus
# Note that the default options are NOT set up the same as
# the precompiled kernel, you have to check everything
make dep clean modules modules_install bzdisk
depmod -a
# at this point, the new kernel should be on the floppy; try booting
# from it
When you're satisified with the new kernel, you have to tell LILO to use it;
for that, see the LILO man page :-)
Good luck! It's doable, it's just annoying and time-consuming.

On RH 7 Linux 2.2.16
http://opensource.creative.com emu10k1 driver does NOT compile.
Probably needs some ENV variable set.
http://www.alsa-project.org
Drivers will NOT load. This is probably because of missing configuration
information relevant to my system.
Still trying to figure it out. Luckily this is a hobby for me ;-).
Will post more specific error messages when I get home on my system.

What about drivers? I have been having a terrible time compiling or

Hi Jason,
First find out what your PATH is currently:
echo $PATH
It'll give you back a list of files separated
by :s. Apparently, Xvnc is not in one of those
files.
Next find Xvnc by whatever method suits you.
You need to add the path to Xvnc to the existing
path using a command like this (in bash, which
is what most Linux distros give you as default):
export PATH=$PATH:/path/to/Xvnc
This command simply tells it to make the path
equal the old path ($PATH) plus :/path/to/Xvnc
at the end.
The PATH is stored in your .bashrc in your home
directory. You can add to the path manually by
editing .bashrc -- take a look. Changes done this way
will not disappear when you log out.

Subject: Configuring Cisco 675 Router for Linux & SSH
Crossposted-To: comp.os.linux.hardware

KEY WORDS: Cisco 675 US WEST DSL SSH secure shell
secure-shell linux router port 22
port 1021 port 1022 port 1023
secure shell hangs ssh hangs
multiple ssh connections
Shawn Here with some info I'm posting to usenet
to save others some trouble shooting time.
My DSL speed had been steadily deteriorating
to the point that I was getting about 110kbps download
speed during the day and evening. before 7:00 A.M.
it was good, aroud 640kbps, which is tha maximum.
But they were throttling back during the day.
After waiting longer than I should for them to improve,
I bit the bullet and switched to US West for service.
Took 2 days to get the DSL going, and another day to
get SSH under linux going.
1st day I talked to a dummy and waited too long.
2nd day I talked to someone who knew routers. My old ISP
uses the router in bridging mode (this is all new to me)
it just passes the traffic on to you computer.
US West actually uses the router as a router, and it needs
to be configured as such. That is, I had to set
the ppp password and username inside the router. I needed
to turn on the DHCP Server in the router. This was not
only not mentioned in any documentation US West sent
me. The documentation actually said to set the router
to bridging mode, which was out of date info.
Anyway. After wiping out all the nvram in the router
and reprogramming it with the help of the US West lady
who knew what she was talking about, I was back on line--
almost. Things looked different. Before when I connected
my computer was assigned an IP address. Now the
IP address is assigned to the router. Then the router
runs the DHCP server which processes the DHCP request
fromm my box and assigns it an internal ip address.
It's actually pretty cool now that it's going but
was more work to set up.
I can telnet into my router. Hmmm. So I immediately
decided to set the password in my router.
Then, I noticed that if I had more than one SSH session
open out of my box to work then they would hang.
A search of US West was pointless. In a few places their
documentation said the routers don't support ssh.
However a search of dejanews was more enlightening.
It turns out I needed to add entries to the NAT table
within the router, so that when someone secure shells
into my router on port 22 the router redirects it to
port 22 on my linux box. That worked.
COMMAND: set nat entry add 10.0.0.2 22 99.999.999.999 22 tcp
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
^
|
enter the ip address of your router here +--+
telnet or hyperterm into your router
and do a "show nat" to find the ip address of
your router.
Under linux, try "telnet 10.0.0.1" to get
to your router.
Under windows, user hyperterm and the control cable
that hooks from the serial port to the router.
Then I had to start up some ssh processes out of my linux
box (in debug or verbose mode), I saw where ssh was
allocating ports 1021, 1022, 1023, ... on my box when
running ssh. However, the router know nothing bout
these ports, so they were all being routed to port 0
on my linux box. Having multiple connections all
going to the same (wrong) port on my linux box was
causing the hang. So I added 3 more entries to
the NAT in the router, specifying that ports 1021, 1022,
and 1023 be redirectred to the like named ports on my
linux box. And presto-chango things started working.
I should add some more entries, since I sometimes have
more than 3 ssh sessions going at the same time.
Anyway, I didn't see any reference to these ports
(1021,...)
in the ssh man pages, they just refer to the port 22
for incoming connections. I also didn't find this
in my search of deja news. I'm glad they left the
debug option in as part of the ssh so that I could find
that. I will post this letter to some of the linux
and ssh news groups so that others with this problem
may be able to solve it quicker than I did.
COMMAND: set nat entry add 10.0.0.2 1021 99.999.999.999 1021 tcp

The setting you want is in the /etc/lilo.conf file. In there change
the "default" line to point to the lilo "label" of the win boot

Well, let me add my two penneth. I tried Grip, but on my (admittedly
less than powerful) system it was less than half the speed of cd2mp3.
I'd recommend cd2mp3 - simple command line utility which does a job and
does it well.
I used freeamp as well, until I discovered xmms. Never looked back.
