Subject: Problem with drive over 32gig
Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 21:58:38 -0600
I just purchased a WD400 40gig drive and it didn't take long before
I realized my bios has problems with drives over 32gig.
I've been reading the "Large Disk How-To" and am
still a bit confused as to how to solve the problem.
I'm running Suse 6.4 with the 2.2.14 kernel which the How-To
says supports these large drives.
The drive will be formatted in ext2.
The documentation for the disk says you can set the jumpers on the disk to
trick the system into thinking it has 4092 cylinders, rather than the actual
capacity. That way I can at least get my box to boot.
It then suggests loading EZ-Bios.
I think I would rather specify the disk's parameters at boot time, but
I'm a bit confused as to what I should enter into LILO.
On the disk, the parameters are given as:
Drive Parameters LBA 78165360
At the website the parameters are given as:
Cylinders* 16383
Heads 16
Sectors/Track 63
Landing Zone 16383
WPC 16383
Following the directions in the How-To,
Dividing 78165360/(16*63)=77545 cylinders
Should I give the boot parameter
hdc=77545,16,63
or should I give the parameter
hdc=16383,16,63
as the website says?
Many Thanks
Mike

Subject: X and MS Intellimouse problem (mouse won't move from center)
Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 04:54:19 GMT
Can anyone shed light on this problem?
I have installed RedHat 7 many times now. The recognition of hardware
components seems inconsistent. The last time I installed was the first
time on first boot that the OS recognized my 3Com NIC, and let me
configure networking. So for the first time I have Apache running and
available!
My big problem, however, is X. The mouse never moves from the center of
my screen after issuing startx, eg. its dead. On one of the installs
the mouse worked for a short period in X, then stopped again.
I have an Intellimouse Serial, but right now I'm using a configuration
of Generic 2 button mouse. No help.
My Pentium II 266 has no USB, but I notice that Linux seems to install
it anyway. Is this normal?
The monitor is recognized correctly as Dell D1028L, but the video card
is picked up as NVidia / SGS Thomson|Riva128 even though it really
is a Diamond Viper 330. I've tried both, same result. The screen looks
fine - just no mouse movement. Right now I'm configured as generic
SVGA. No change.
Thanks for any guidance.

Hi all,
I just installed Debian Potato on my machine and used apt-get to install
kde from kde.tdyc.com. Most functions work fine, including most kpilot
functions. It syncs without any problems, and, using the internal
conduits, I can view and modify my contact data and memos. However, the
external conduits do not seem to work. Specifically, no calendar data
or to-do data syncs to Korganizer (despite the fact that I configured
the Korganizer conduit with the correct path to my calendar .vcs file).
No error messages appear.
I can't find any documentation on where kplilot or its conduits keep
their log files, so I don't even know how to begin to troubleshoot
this. Any help would be appreciated. Also, does anyone know of a
conduit that would sync contact info with Kab?
Thanks much,
Mike.

I never understood why RedHat, being popular and thus having some
income, doesn't spend more time polishing their distribution. There's
nothing comparable to YaST2 on it; not even a usable GUI system admin tool
(linuxconf and control-panel are pretty mediocre).

Subject: Red Hat 7.0 jumpy cursor in Xfree 4
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Genesis)

Hey,
I just installed RedHat 7.0 on one of my new boxes and when I
``startx'' X comes up but
when I move the mouse the cursor jumps 7 or so pixels for tic on the
mouse. I do not think the mouse has any thing to do with it, because even
it the mouse does not have very many possible positions, it will just
send the code to move one pixel, when moved. On my RH 6.2 box this does
not happen, I have pixel for pixel precision with the mouse/cursor.
I am using the default Xfree version that the installer installs, (on
both boxes). I am running at 800x600 on the RH 7.0 box, and
I am running at 1280x1024 on the RH 6.2 box, if that makes any
difference.
Thanks,
Genesis

The bios only affects windows and not linux.

If this kernel has a problem with formatting ext2. (I had trouble formatting
linux from middle to the end of the 40G
using Redhat 6.2), Format as far as you can (in my case middle and formatting
10G leaving 10G unpartition at the end). If it works, upgrade your kernel to
latest kernel and resize your ext2. (I took the easier route and upgraded
to Redhat 7.0).

Why? If there is no problem I would leave it unless there is a reason.
If you jumper it, it will look like a 2G harddrive from the computer but it act
like a 40G harddrive.
It may degrade performance of your harddisk.
I had to jumper it on my Maxtor 40G otherwise the ancient Compaq BIOS would
alway complain during bootup and did not recognize the such a big harddrive.
("F1-Boot").

No, I did not have to install the parameters during boot time.
The problem is that linux would never boot up from lilo.
It would alway boot up windows.
The solution from Redhat about Disk Overlay program is to create a 16M (tiny)
/boot (mine is /dev/hda3) directory at the beginning of your harddisk.
Apply lilo to the /boot directory (/dev/hda3) and not /dev/hda
Deactive the windows partition and active the /boot partition

Hi everyone,
I have a Creative decoder card (DXR2) and I can play DVDs/VCDs/MPGs on my TV
through Win2k with no problem. But now I want to take out the card and put
it in my P166 box (which is closer to my bigger TV).
Would it be possible to have the decoder card working along with the tv-out
capability ? What software would be needed (if possible a console soft.)
Thanks,

Yes, that will make the kernel capable of forwarding -- it still won't
do it until you explicitly setup what you want to do.

Right-click on a blank spot in the panel, select
Applets -> Utility -> Desk Guide
Use the middle mouse-button to position it where you prefer. You can
change the configuration by using the control-center's "Workspaces"
options.

First, make sure you have that library:
(as root)
ldconfig -v | grep X11
/usr/X11R6/lib:
libX11.so.6 => libX11.so.6.1
(if you don't see that, then X11 isn't installed and you'll need to
install it later)
Good news on the other front; with the latest RedHat beta you can do
stuff like this:
up2date --whatprovides=libX11.so.6
:libX11.so.6:
XFree86-libs-4.0.2-12.1
And it will even fetch the new package and install it if you
like. (much like 'apt' under debian)

You will need to edit the /etc/lilo.conf file and then run the lilo
program. Be careful, and read all the documentation first (although
your floppy will always get you back into linux if you mess up).

Don't run Linux because you hate Windows, run it because you want a
great UNIX impelmentation.
As for your problem; Mandrake 7.2 has numerous problems and I'd
reccomend something better (even an older version of Mandrake).

Is this a from a new install or an old one? Redhat is at least version 6.2.
You're dealing with 2.5+ year old software. In ether case I think the best
thing would be to upgrade to something a little more recent. From the last
line, though looks like a protocol problem, what kind of system is your DHCP
server?

The easiest way to test:
ln -s /dev/ttyS2 /dev/modem
minicom
(Minicom is a simple text-based modem terminal program much like
Hyperterm that comes with Windows) You should be able to type
AT
And the modem should respond
OK

Check the documentation about the cards if they are 'NE2000' or
something compatible. Then recompile your kernel including the
correct support for the card(s). Don't forget to add Networking
support (TCP/IP).
Reboot the machine with the new kernel (keep the old kernel around
just in case), and then configure the card using ifconfig.
See the Net3-HOWTO for the configuration of the network and the
Kernel-HOWTO for the kernel compilation.

The easiest way is to upgrade to woody by adding new references in
/etc/apt/sources.list and running
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

See the Net-3-HOWTO. You will have (probabily) to install also
the diald deamon.
