I finally managed to install rh6.2 - now have more problems!
I created a /swap partn. (linux swap) but is unable to mount it - tried
mount -t swap /dev/hda6 etc... also tried swapon /dev/hda6 and ended up
getting error messages. I checked the fstab file and it indicated /dev/hda6
as a swap and a 0 0. I remembered someone told me I can automount the swap
but forgot.
Immediately after install, I rebooted. It worked fine, log in as root, then
went to shutdown....all is ok,,,, except after the "system halted"
message..there was a full screendump!! something like code<1> unable to
handle kernel paging request ..... How can there be kernel activity after
all process have been shut down and Linux also said that "system halted"?
What have I done wrong? (not setting a proper swap partn?)
I am unable to setup my Creative PCI128 vibra card. I ran sndconfig but it
could only detect ensoniq and did not have any list for me to choose.

I downloaded NVIDIA_kernel-0.9-2.i386.rpm and ran rpm -Uvh <above file> and
it install ok but I see no difference - also, it appears that the drivers
are for RH6.1 - will it cause problems on a RH6.2 system? According to the
readme at nvidia.com after installing the nvidiaconfig should run
automatically - but it did not. There are a few "driver files" at nvidia's
site, what files should I really need?

After surfing the net, I "kill" netscape and the ppp connection by hitting
the "X" on the respective windows - but the modem is still connected - how
can I auto disconnect the modem or what program to run to kill / drop the
line?

Subject: Help me with PCMCIA Installation on my new Laptop!
Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2000 16:51:31 GMT
hi everyone....
I just got a new laptop (Hitachi 220FX) a few weeks ago. installed
Mandrake 7.1 on it and everything is alright except one thing: I
couldn't get my Ethernet PC Card to work!
For your info..I have 3Com 3CCSH572BT 10/100 Ethernet PC Card (supported
under 3c574_cs driver according to PCMCIA DOCS). According to Windows (I
look for the info in my laptop manual...to no avail!), my PCMCIA
controller is Texas Instrument PCI-1410 CardBus Controller (not in the
list of supported controller).
The problem is when the system loads the modules during boots....it
always hang up with kernel panic with error message something like bad
interrupt request table/entry.
Disabling the boot entry and trying to load each modules one by one...it
turns out that the system hang up when trying to load the i82365 PCMCIA
Controller module. Changing the PCIC entry (in pcmcia config under
sysconfig) to tcic eliminates the kernel panic problem but leave the
card useless.....(^sigh^...so my controller must be of i82365
compatible).
By now my question should be clear for you all (..^grin^..), any
suggestion how to get my PC Card works? I know that cardbus is not
supported yet...but considering that my PC Card is not CardBus PC Card,
should it be a problem?
Or maybe any tweak up for that?
I have a bit of programming background but I am not so familiar with
linux environment....so if any of you suggests something, please be more
specifics....
But you are welcome to suggest any type of solutions/tweak-ups....be it
a simple or a very complicated one. Just don't suggest me to get a new
laptop......PLEASE! .....:]
Anyway...TIA for any help!
cheers,
YOGA

Hi. I have recently installed RedHat6.2 with Gnome. But my Gnorpm doesn't
seem to want to do what it is suposed to do. If I have one single
RPM-file, Gnorpm lists it on and on again forever, until you kill the
process. Do I have to reinstall Gnorpm? If yes, how do I do that? (I'm
a supernewbie).

Have you used mkswap to "format" the swap partition (the installation
should have done this for you).
see man pages for swapon, mkswap, swapoff, fstab
I checked the fstab file and it indicated /dev/hda6

If it's in /etc/fstab, it should be automagically mounted by the init
scripts at boot-time.

Connect to internet fine.
Tried Pine, Sendmail, Netscape, but cannot send or receive
Email. Error msg's "fatal data error" etc.
What is the easiest Email pgm to use with this
config, and how?
Help really appreciated,
It took me 83 years to get this dumb.

Subject: modem dials, but connections fail (both minicom & kppd)
Date: 14 Oct 2000 17:25:12 GMT
Problems with both minicom and kppp:
Minicom will dial modem and connect, but then it hangs.
Last message in terminal is :
CONNECT 31200 /ARQ/v34/LAPM/V4BIS
Problem with kppp is different. Again, modem
establishes connection; but then ppp "times out".
When I reset time from 30 to 180 seconds, I get
message that "pppd daemon died unexpectedly"
and kppp terminal says it can't find interface ppp0.
When I try to "debug" messages are something
like this:
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS0
LCP: timeout sending config-requests
connection terminated
"remote system does not seem to answer
to config request"
I'm a newbie and will appreciate suggestions.

I can't tell unless I know what ppp program you are using,
but you should use it's "hangup" (or equiv.) command instead of
just closing the window with the "X" button.
You can always shutdown ppp0 from a bash prompt with the
ifdown (InterFace DOWN) command:
[root@zephyr]# ifdown ppp0
BTW: The ifup command will start the link:
[root@zephyr]# ifup ppp0
Hope this helps!

On my machine the new nvidia driver is called nvidia_drv.o, nv_drv.o which
you are using was the original OSS driver which didnt support Geforce 2
(though that one does appear to be very slightly newer...).
Anyways perhaps changing the driver in the driver section of you X config
from nv to nvidia might do the trick as you may not actually be using the
driver you think you are.

As an example, here's mine, which runs at 3:02AM every day -- *before*
backups run. No sense backing up all that cruft.
02 3 * * * cd /home/jlb/.netscape/cache; rm -rf *
Use 'crontab -e' to add that to your personal crontab, and you are set to
go.
