This demo disk is really impressive! That said, however, the only
things preventing someone from doing a similar thing with Linux
are the lack of a lean enough web browser and the lack of a lean
enough windowing system. Both areas are currently being addressed
by open source projects (see for instance http://www.viewml.com
and http://microwindows.censoft.com).

The partition table is fine. /dev/hda3 is an extended partition.
The remaining partitions following are logical partitions of that
extended partition. If you add up all the blocks for hda5-hda8, it
should equal hda3.

Now I am thinking that there may be a problem with putting lilo on
a logical partition. I don't know - just a guess. Here is what
I would try just to be on the safe side and not put lilo in the mbr
just yet until we are sure it works. I would try putting lilo on
a floppy.

Edit lilo.conf so that you have boot=/dev/fd0. Put a floppy in the
drive and do 'lilo' to write lilo to the floppy. Leave the floppy
in the drive and reboot. Try accessing both windows and linux.
If that works, try it for a while and then change lilo.conf so that
boot=/dev/hda. Run lilo and that will write lilo to the mbr. There
is no reason not to have it there, because you are running a form
of windows that does not have a boot loader. If you end up installing
win2k, you will not be able to have lilo in the mbr.

I am wondering if you did something between where you say that win95
boots but linux does not and then you say lilo is stuck at LIL? Did
that change happen all by itself?

Does anyone know if lilo can be installed on a logical partition?

I hate to respond without addressing the question, but I would definitel
y not use Redhat 7.0 as a firewall. Redhat releases are buggy in the
x.0 versions and are patched toward stability/security with the x.1 and
x.2 releases. I get 7.0 bugzilla reports almost everyday and unless you
want to be updating your firewall very frequently, you are likely to
have lots of vulnerabilities.

For firewall use, I would install 6.2 and the eight or so patches that
are available and wait until 7.0 has been updated.

First delete the /usr/src/linux and create the former link.
Your system was not compiled with the 2.2.17 headers. You
also do not need the 2.2.17 kernel in /usr/src. Ask Linus
why.

Now to solve yur problem. Install the kgcc rpm. Untar
the kernel rpm in say /home/<user>/linux. make menuconfig
and save. Edit the top level make file and change the
CC from gcc or cc to kgcc. Then

make dep clean bzImage modules

Yep type it all on one line. It works.
Install modules, kernel and System.map as root......

I'm fairly new to acpi. I have it compiled into my kernel, and it seems
to setup fine upon boot. I have the appropriate entries in /proc/sys.
I compiled and installed acpid, etc. and all of that seemed to go fine.
Now I guess my question is how do I use it? How do I set the power
management options? How do I set it up to turn off my pc when I shut
down? Perhaps these options aren't available as of yet. I can't seem to
find this info anywhere, and the acpi FAQ seems to more detail the
technical aspects rather than using/seting up the features. Any help
would be much appreciated.
Please reply to me directly when you reply as I cannot always get access

I have redhat 7 installed and am trying to get the test kernels to
compile. I have heard that there are issues with gcc 2.96. I have kgcc
installed, but I'm not sure how to use it. I have tried the following
and it still seems to be using gcc. Also when I do use gcc (not kgcc),
the kernel compiles but it takes about 4-5 times as long as it did under
RH 6.1. The kernel even boots, but several modules fail to work.

Here's what I have tried:

1. Changing "hostcc" in the top level Makefile to kgcc

2. setting CC=kgcc as an environment variable and then compiling

3. typing "CC=kgcc make dep modules etc."

Yet when it starts compling each line in the output says gcc rather than
kgcc, and I get LOTS of warnings about "nothing can be pasted after this
token." Is this right? I never got this under the old rh6.1 gcc. It
also takes 4-5 times longer to compile in rh7.

Please reply to me directly as I can't always get to this list.

Beside using XF86 4.x.x with the Nvidia-provided drivers, you may also
want to look at Utah-GLX with 3.3.x (especially for older cards, which I
think are not well supported by the current Nvidia drivers):

http://glx.on.openprojects.net
http://utah-glx.sourceforge.net/

I've had good experiences while using it on a variety of supported cards
(TNT, S3V, Rage Pro).

I have a 1st generation smart and friendly mach 12 12x scsi CDR. I
haven't found any documented support for this drive in cd-record or
cdrdao, although it seems to work using mmc. The drive is hanging off
an adaptec 2940. I have an a atapi 44x cdrom and a 7200rpm ata/66 hd,
both using dma. I'm using the 2.4.0 test kernels (both redhat's, and
self-complied ones) and redhat 7. I can't get the drive to burn
reliably. I can't get it to complete a burn at all from the cdrom, but
from the harddrive I can only get it to run at most 3-4x mode. If I try
it any faster or using the cdrom as a source, I get either buffer
underruns, if it actually starts burning, or I get errors complaining
about the pre-burn areas and failed commands and responses (I don't
remember off hand the exact messages, I'll look them up and post).

The drive works fine under win98 at all speeds using both the cdrom and
harddrive as sources. However, I got similar error messages under win98
initially, but a patch to adaptec EZ cd-creator 4 on adaptec's web site
fixed that.

So I guess I'm wondering whether this is a kernel issue, or a
cd-record/cdrdao issue. I have heard that there are issues with the sg
interface in the newer kernels. I'm using the cdrecord that came with
rh7 and the newest cdrdao (as of a week ago).

Any advice is much appreciated,

Hi,

I have recently installed SUSE 7.0 which I got a version of from the

cds but after installation there was no latex executable to be seen.

I thought there may be some incompatibilities between the RPMs so I

If I go to /usr/share/texmf/teTeX/bin/i386-linux-glibc where latex
is installed on my SUSE 6.2 machine I see all the usual executables
but no latex.

Anyone have any ideas as to what has gone wrong or what stupid mistake
I'm making?

Subject: DHCP on Linux??!!
Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2000 15:39:19 GMT

Hi, there:

I got several windows PCs and Linux PCs. Lately I bought a Linksys
router (4 ports) to share my DSL connection in my home. It uses DHCP to
assign IP automatically to every PC client.

My questions:
1. If I turn off the DHCP feature and assign IP, DNS... to every PC by
myself, the connection performance to Internet will be bad or the same?

2. If I still use DHCP in this router, how can I config my Linux PC to
work well for Internet connection? Since Linksys assigns IP
automatically to PC clients from 192.168.1.100, currently I assign
192.168.1.105 to Linux PC A, 192.168.1.115 to Linux PC B, then
sometimes it works fine, but sometimes they don't work(I mean connect
to Internet).

Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks a lot!!
