Hi,

I just bought a laptop which has win 2000 on it. I wanted to install
linux on it. But since i dont have any floppy drive or cdrom drives, i
was planning to install it using loadlin, but it seems that loadlin
works only in dos mode and there is no dos mode in win 2000. Is there a
way around this. Are any loadlin executables available which would work
for win 2000. Is there any way to install linux without any external
drives.

thanks

Subject: Re: Dual boot Win2k & Linux
Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2000 15:45:33 -0500

I myself was able to triple-boot Win98, WinNT4 and RedHat 6.1 in the past,
basically by installing LILO on my linux root partition (NOT MBR, as it
would kill the NT loader), and then copying the Linux boot sector by the
following command:
    dd if=/dev/hda7 of=/tmp/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
Then I copied this to a DOS-mounted floppy and added a line in boot.ini that
said:
    c:\bootsect.lnx="Red Hat Linux"

However, this was a month ago when I had NT and Linux both installed on a
7.8GB IDE HDD. Currently I have a 30GB IDE drive with Win98 (on primary,
first 4GB), Win2000 (the next 24GB), and then the remaining 2GB dedicated to
Red Hat 7, with a root partition of 1664MB and the end of the drive as a
swap partition. I am familiar that many systems will not boot OSes that are
past the 1024 cylinder, but does this still pertain to Linux and newer
systems? My HDD is brand new, and my BIOS/mobo are less than a year old.
My problem is that when I choose "Red Hat 7" at the 2000 boot menu, it give
me a blinking underscore but does not load LILO or anything. I am
confused -- is this a problem with LILO not seeing the end of the drive or
Windows, or both? I have the feeling that LILO has no problem, since I made
a bootable diskette during the Red Hat installation, which runs LILO and
boots my Red Hat system just fine. I just would like to boot my RH system
quickly from the NT menu rather than popping in a floppy everytime and
waiting. Does anyone know how I can get around this? Is there a way that I
can make an image of this floppy that NT can load successfully? Any help is
greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2000 20:53:21 GMT

Hi,

I've downloaded Qpopper and extracted the files to a temporary
directory on my RH7.0 box.

The install file tells me to first run ./configure and then make.

When I type in ./configure, I get the error message "No such file or
Directory".

I know the line is correct, because I can type in "vi ./configure" and
it lets me edit the file. I'm logged on as Root, and Root has all
access privledges (including execute).

Any ideas? It could be a long learning process if I can't even execute
the first command in the Install files instructions. :-(

TIA

I'll assume you're talking about RH7.0. I installed it fine using only
the first CD. The second disc has many other useful packages that you
might like, as well as some experimental stuff like Mozilla M17 and a

So I've downloaded and burnt the complete 5 CD ISO set of RedHat 7.0
but I don't have a clue how to partition my HDs.

Hhere's how my HDs look like now:
6 GB HD, 1 FAT32 partition for Win98SE (drive "C:")
30 GB HD, 1 FAT32 partition for some data (drive "D:")

Here's what I want:
* Linux and all partitions it needs should be on the 30 GB disc,
there's enough space for it and not too important data (don't need to
backup this), I can resize/move/whatever this disc with Partition
Magic with no problems at all

* under absolutely no circumstances I want any "drive letter jumping"
under Windows 98 to occur, the drive where Win98SE currently resides
("C:") must stay "C:", if the current drive letter "D:" would change I
wouldn't appreciate it but it would be acceptable if there's no way
around it

Question:
how should I partition my drives and is it necessary to make any
changes to the 6GB ("C:") drive to get this thing to boot?

Thanks for any input on this!

When I setup my RedHat distribution (ver 6.0) I selected
sendmail as a package to install. Booting took approximately
30 seconds.

Yesterday, I plugged another network card into my computer, and
it now takes approx 30min to boot. It gets stuck on setting up
sendmail.

I want to make it skip the sendmail section, but can't find the
correct rc file for this. What file do I change so that sendmail
won't start during the bootstrap?

Sendmail is normally started in runlevel 3 so to disable it go to
/etc/rc.d/rc3.d and rename S90sendmail (I think it's called S90sendmail
- the number is not important in this case) to s90sendmail. This will
make sure that sendmail isn't started.

I found an answer on this in the long explanation of lilo in
/usr/doc/lilo/Manual. Lilo can go in the boot sector of the extended
partition, but not in one of the logicals. So it could go in /dev/hda3.
But in your case, I still think it would be best to put it in /dev/hda (mbr)
unless you go crazy and install win2k. Whatever would you want to do that
for? ;-)

This manual also says lilo can't go on a non-linux floppy, but I thought I
had put it on one. I guess I must have had a linux floppy when I did it.
Or maybe I am just not understanding this that well. This manual really is
very detailed and I didn't read the whole thing. I would also like to
understand what it means by 'activating' Maybe that means that you also
have to use linux fdisk to toggle a bootable flag on that partition if you
are going to use it for lilo. That is the only command in fdisk that look
remotely like activating to me. It doesn't look like /dev/hda6 was made
bootable when I look at your partition table. You might want to try putting
lilo on /dev/hda3 (the extended partition). See if it works there and if it
doesn't, try using linux fdisk to set the flag.

fdisk /dev/hda

=============from the Manual=============
The LILO boot sector is designed to be usable as a partition boot sector.
(I.e. there is room for the partition table.) Therefore, the LILO boot
sector can be stored at the following locations:

  - boot sector of a Linux floppy disk. (/dev/fd0, ...)
  - MBR of the first hard disk. (/dev/hda, /dev/sda, ...)
  - boot sector of a primary Linux file system partition on the first hard
    disk. (/dev/hda1, ...)
  - partition boot sector of an extended partition on the first hard disk.
    (/dev/hda1, ...)*

  * Most FDISK-type programs don't believe in booting from an extended
partition and refuse to activate it. LILO is accompanied by a simple
program (activate) that doesn't have this restriction. Linux fdisk also
    supports activating extended partitions.

It _can't_ be stored at any of the following locations:

  - boot sector of a non-Linux floppy disk or primary partition.
  - a Linux swap partition.
  - boot sector of a logical partition in an extended partition.*
  - on the second hard disk. (Unless for backup installations, if the
current first disk will be removed or disabled, or if some other boot
loader is used, that is capable of loading boot sectors from other
    drives.)

  * LILO can be forced to put the boot sector on such a partition by using
the -b option or the BOOT variable. However, only few programs that
operate as master boot records support booting from a logical
    partition.

Subject: 2 X-CD-Roast problems..

Hey folks...

Running RedHat 7.

I'm having problems getting either the newest release version of
X-CD-Roast (.96ex2) or the latest devel release (.98alpha6) working
properly.

For the alpha release (which I'd prefer to use), everything works fine
except for copying audio CDs. The only option is for "On-the-fly"
copying and it won't let me change to creating an image first. I
don't want to have to extract the tracks individually if I can help
it. I've got the correct versions of cdrecord, cdda2wav, etc.

I can't even get the .96ex2 release to compile. I have newer versions
of the dependencies (TCL, Tk, and Tix) and the ./configure script
doesn't seem to find them. Here's the output:

# ./configure
Autoconfiguration of X-CD-Roast 0.96ex:
Checking for S.u.S.E.-Distribution: no
Looking for TCL 8.0-Library: not found
Looking for TK 8.0-Library: not found
Looking for Tix 4.1-Library: not found
Looking for Tix 4.1-SAM-Library: not found
Looking for TCL 8.0 lib-directory: not found
Looking for TK 8.0 lib-directory: not found
Looking for Tix 4.1 lib-directory: /usr/lib/tix4.1/
Looking for TCL/TK/Tix include-files: /usr/include/
No TCL 8.0 Library found. Please install TCL 8.0. (further information
can be found in the README.Compile-file)

RPM -q reports I have the regular RH7 versions already installed:

tcl-8.3.1
tk-8.3.1
tix-4.1.0.6

and I verified this. Is there any way to reference these installed
libraries instead of having to build new (actually, old) libraries?
Any suggestions on either (or both) issues would be much
appreciated... Thanks..

Adam
