Hello,
For quite some time I've been trying to install Linux (pref. Debian) on my
Compaq Deskpro XL466, but without any succes. In order to do it, I need the
"Linux Compaq Deskpro XL HOWTO". Unfortunately, the only site hosting this
HOWTO has removed it.
Can anyone send me the "Linux Compaq Deskpro XL HOWTO" on
[EMAIL PROTECTED]? Thanks a lot!!!

Subject: partition question
I have some more questions about partitioning. I have been messing around
with PartitionMagic and through that you can set up a Linux Ext2 partition
along with a Linux swap space. Now when I went through the installation for
Linux I got to the Automatic partitioning screen and i'm pretty sure I clicked
on automatically partition and remove data. The following screen was the
Network card configuration. At this point I wasnt sure what I was doing and
stopped. I guess my question basically is would this installation have been ok
if I had gone through with it after setting up the Linux Ext2 and swap space
partition through the partitionmagic? Where would the / and /boot directories
have gone? In the Ext2 partition? I'm not sure if I should go this route.
Which is the better way? I currently have 3 partitions, one primary that
holds windows98 and another extended which hold 2 logical partitions. All 3
partitions are 11GB each. I've tried going into the installation for Linux with
all space on the hard drive allocated by the 3 partitions. But i'm worried that
once I get through the setup it will erase my C partition that holds windows98.
Is it better to cut one of the logical drives in half, making it about 6GB and
go into the Linux installation with say 5GB of unallocated space? Will the
automatic partitioning use the unallocated space to make the partition AND will
it install Linux in that particular partition? I just want to find out the best
way to have both windows98 and linux on my machine.
Thanks for any advice, Tom

I guess that your distribution toke the 'automatic' concept a bit too far:
probabily he had destroyed your partition scheme and installed a
standard-defined partition scheme.

I guess that you have to choose a "manual" way to install and decide yourself
how/where to put your various partitions.

Set timeout to zero or quote it out to make Lilo boot linux without
waiting!

Hi Laurent,
could you send your system configuration (mainboard, processor, IDE-interfaces).
In case you are using an A7V(133), the problem is related to the ATA100 Promise
controller.

I know that's not all you got.
You also got a versionnumber.
You should post everything next time, if you want adequate help.

It's a BIOS limitation, older BIOS's were unable to boot from beyond
cylinder 1024.
At the top of your lilo.conf, a line stating "linear" may be found
change it to "lba32" and try to run "/sbin/lilo -v" again

Just a note that so it causes noone else pain.
The symptom is a core dump(silent) when trying to login. All I knew for
hours was I couldn't login using mingetty, but all other methods of logging
in worked fine.
I was going nuts till I just tried a lower version(o).

Easy one:
How do I set the time zone for the system clock from EST to (for

cheating.
The man file is no help.

Subject: Install Linux on SCSI HD with Solaris OS
Date: Fri, 16 Mar 2001 20:20:18 -0800
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,
I have a PC with only one SCSI controller, one SCSI CDROM and two SCSI
hard disks. The first SCSI HD (ID : 0) has been installed with NT 4.0
and Solaris OS. The second SCSI HD(ID: 2) is installed with Redhat Linux
6.2. The CDROM has an SCSI ID of 4. The ID of the controller is 7.
When I install the Linux, I removed the First SCSI HD of NT & SOLARIS.
So the lilo is trying to boot fom /dev/sda and root is /dev/sda5. Then
I connected the first HD together. With the SCSI controller, I config it
is boot from the SCSI ID of 2. But the lilo cannot boot corectly. It
prompted like "VFS cannot mount root from /dev/sda 08:02 ....". So I
reboot and using the command of " LILO: linux root=/dev/sdb5". This
time, linux is booting successfully with some erros of "cannot mount
/home ... " . Then I modify the /etc/fstab and /etc/lilo as follows:
=============/etc/fstab.old =======================
/dev/sda5 / ext2
defaults 1 1
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2
defaults 1 2
/dev/sda7 /home ext2
defaults 1 2
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,ro 0
0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto
noauto,owner 0 0
none /proc proc
defaults 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts
gid=5,mode=620 0 0
/dev/sda6 swap swap
defaults 0 0
===================/etc/fstab =============
/dev/sdb5 / ext2
defaults 1 1
/dev/sdb1 /boot ext2
defaults 1 2
/dev/sdb7 /home ext2
defaults 1 2
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner
0 0
none /proc proc
defaults 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts
gid=5,mode=620 0 0
/dev/sdb6 swap swap
defaults 0 0
==================/etc/lilo.conf.old===================
boot=/dev/sda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
linear
default=linux
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-5.0
label=linux
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.14-5.0.img
read-only
root=/dev/sda5
=================/etc/lilo.conf==============
boot=/dev/sdb
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
linear
default=linux
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-5.0
label=linux
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.14-5.0.img
read-only
root=/dev/sdb5
But linux cannot boot correctly. It still prompt " VFS cannot mount root
on /dev/sda 08:02...". It seems no changes take the effect.
I booted the solaris in order to check whether or not I damaged it after
installing linux. After that, I reboot the linux, then the screen is
full of "07 07 07...". It seems the MBR of the second HD has been
destroied.
So My question is :
1) Can I install Linux at the second SCSI HD without damage the solaris
partition on the fist SCSI HD?
2) Now I can boot from a floppy , but can I boot from /dev/sdb directly?
3) How to install the linux to ensure it can be boot from the second
SCSI HD?
Any information is apprieciated.

I'm having one heck of a time getting my RAID 0 configured system to boot
2.4.2.
I'm able to boot stock RedHat 7 just fine - but I would love to run the
latest release
(wolverine) or at least the 2.4.0 kernel but can't get my machine to boot.
I have a ASUS A7V133 with Athlon 1200/266, 512 of RAM and 2 of the IBM
Deskstar drives - both on the promise controller. I have windows 2k on the
first 10
gigs and have linux on the rest. I have no problems booting RH 7 off the
RAID drives.
I've tried just about everything I can think of - if someone could sent me
their .config
file it would be appreciated..
