I have the very same problem. I installed XFree86 and NVidia's drivers
for my TNT. same error. anyone know what it means? It might have
something to do with GLX... here's the last few lines of X error log:

(II) Initializing built-in extension XINERAMA
(II) Initializing built-in extension XFree86-Bigfont
(II) [GLX]: Calling GlxExtensionInit

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11.  Server aborting

Is it the GlxExtensionInit calling that is crashing it, or has that
loaded ok already?

I'd appreciate any help anyone can give.

I'm kind of stuck on a question.
In my rc.d/rc'runlevel' directory should I include a link to:
1) rc.d/init.d/httpd
or
2) acpachectl.
Which is beter?

Just a guess that you need the latest
version of the rpm package. Try doing
rpm -q rpm to find the version, and
see in say redhat's site or rpmfind.net
if it is the latest. If not, download
and install the latest rpm package.

use the link to rc.d/init.d/httpd for runlevel configuration.

And use "apachectl" if you have to restart apache while it is running.
then type "apachectl graceful" and no user will recognize that it has
been restarted.

When I first started using Linux, I had the same problem. It was related to
the fact that the modules are from a previous compile. Try the following in
/usr/src/linux

$ make mrproper #This will remove all object, dependancy, and config files,
so backup your config file if you want to keep it.
$ make xconfig/menuconfig #This will make your config, alternatively, you
can just restore your config.
$ make dep
$ make bzImage
$ cp System.map /boot #This is optional and you should only copy System.map
after saving the old one.
$ cp arch/<architechture>/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz #Ditto, except it is
obviously not optional.
$ mv /lib/modules /lib/modules.old
$ make modules
$ make modules_install

This will make everything clean. Make sure you have everything you need.
Alternatively, you can make a monolithic (i.e. no modules needed or
supported.) This has the advantage that your hardware is recognized and
pretty much set up before your rc scripts ever start. The disadvantage is
that there are certain features that are only available as modules and the
kernel tends to be a bit memory hungry in this config. My suggestion is to
compile support for all your hardware into the kernel as you will need them
often(esp. serial/ether/console/harddrive options.) and then compile all the
little options that you want to mess with as modules.

This should result in 'cannot execute binary file',
but 'loading' the file might have failed in a more subtle way.

That would result in 'permission denied'.
But usually this is a hot tip.

ldd also just _starts_ executing it - but the loader then is told to
be verbose about loading libraries. Thus the same errors will appear.

Unfortunately i haven't noticed earlier that there's a linux somewhere
here with matlab5. Said file is an ordinary executable, not forking:

    $ strace -f ./lmhostid
    execve("./lmhostid", ["./lmhostid"], [/* 50 vars */]) = 0
    mmap(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, [...]
    [...]

 Servet,
 - plain access: can you copy that file to another place?

 - what about the other binaries in the same directory?

   In particular i have several identical binaries with just
   different names, acting different by looking at their name.
   If it's the same with yours - and if 'lmhostid' is actually broken,
   you could 'restore by copy' ;-)

When I installed it on our Redhat 6.2 box, modprobe couldn't
run because it searched for /lib/modules/2.2.14... which had

Well, I tried to cheat it by making a symobilc link like
        ln -s 2.2.16 2.2.14.
 (a dirty hand, I knew :-). However, it couldn't be
successful because many objects were still missing
when running modprobe manually.

May you tell me any hint to get it round.

Indeed, you can have only one bootloader in the MBR, but that usually is
not an issue. As far as I can tell, all windows versions, put some
bootcode in the first 512 bytes of the partition they live in (Each
partition has it's own MBR-kind-of-region in the first 512 bytes. So
just pointing to that partition, executes this actual bootcode (The NT
loader doesn't do much more) and boots the actual OS. So whether you use
LILO as bootloader (I do this) or the NT bootloader, it doesn't really
matter. Both will do, you just need to set them up correctly.

look at the /etc/X11/XF86Config file and remove entries that set virtual
screen size. And make sure the modes line in the display subsection of
the screen section (I love this line :-) ) has the resolutions in the
correct order (largest resolution first)
