Your locales seem to be screwed up. I had a worst local problem with SuSE 6.4 but it
got fixed with SuSE 7.0. It seemed to be a problem with the installer.

Which version are you running? The locales in Mandrake 7.0 worked great last I checked.

Is your parallel port configured at BIOS as EPP? It won't be recognized

I'm an ASUS fan, but I don't think they've supplied OS/2 audio drivers
for any modern audio chipsets.

http://www.asus.com.tw/products/motherboard/driver_audio.html
only lists these OS/2 drivers:
Crystal 4237 Audio Driver (for SP98AGP-X)
ESS 1788 onboard Audio for P/I-P55SP3AV M/B

Hi

I am sorry abt the wrong use of the terminology. I have a sony vaio
pcg-sr5k. It does not come with any
floppy or cd-rom drives. It is running win2k, and has 2 partitions, so i was
thinking of installing linux on the other partition. But since i dont have
any drives, i was trying to do it with loadlin and was hosed. Does anyone
know any versions of loadlin that work for win2k.
what kind of cd-rom drive should i buy for which both the win2k and linux
drivers are available.if anyone has any ideas for pcmcia cd-rom drives
please let me know. I guess the only way i can install linux is thru a
drive. Is it still possible to install 95 and then thru 95 install linux and
then do away with linux. Btw can i install linux using a zip drive.

thanks
aneesh.

I have a similar problem, not being able to get Linux recognize my
Creative 8433e CDRW. However it seems from the post previous to yours
(not available at my server) that I must disable ATAPI cdrom in my
kernel. However, how can I then get Linux to recognize my other ATAPI
IDE CDROM? or should I program both as SCSI-emulated?. TIA

If a normal user logs into ftp they will have the same file access
permissions as they would at a shell prompt.

There may be a deb package called something like "anon-ftp"
which sets up an anonymous ftp account with (very) limited
access (e.g. only to /ftp/pub). Most linux distro's separate the
anonymous access parts from the rest of wu-ftp for security reasons.

If you install and activate such a package you should read all
the security information at the wu-ftp www site!

hello,
im trying to get x windows running on my machine. My video adapter
requires xfree86, version 3.3.5. My debian package, on cd, has version
3.3.2.(as well as other x packages) So i thought just download an updated
 xfree86 and cross my fingers.
I downloaded the most recent version (3.3.6) and saved it on a floppy disc.
When i tried to copy this file to the hard drive to install it i encounter a
data CRC error.
Why is this? Do i need more than the one most recent file ie the whole
package,
to make it work? My modem is not yet functioning so an ftp download is not
possible. Is it someting to do with saving the file as msdos type 8.3?

any help appreciated

If you wnt to make CD's then you need the ISO files (they are at most
650MD to fit on a CD). If I were you I would:

1. copy the files you downloaded onto the harddisk.
2. make a bootable floppy for a hard disk installation (using rawwrite
and hd.img)
3. boot into linux using this floppy and when it prompts you point it to
the files you downloaded. The automated inatll will start from there.

The only thing is you have to decide how you want the HD partitoned and
whether you want a dual boot system.

I installed it this way last week and the install went ok. Mandrake is
the best linux distribution i have seen for my purposes. if you have any
problems post it here and be *specific*.

I have two machines I use constantly. My main machine is running win2k. I
use it to connect to the linux box with Hummingbird Exceed 6.2. I really
would like to be able to hear sounds from my linux machine. The linux
machine is running Redhat 7.0.

>From what I've read so far, it looks like esounds is the main sound server
for enlightenment and it is capable of exporting the sounds over the
network. However there isn't a windows client/server that can receive this
export from esounds.

My other option is to use the soundcard that is already in the linux
machine, hook some speakers up and have twice as many speakers on my desk.
I could live with this because I really need sound on both machines. I have
tried this, but it seems that when your connected via exceed, the linux box
will not play sounds. However when I use the linux box directly (ie move
all my keyboard, mouse and video cables) then the sound works. Yes I could
buy a KVM but I'm trying to figure out a way so that I don't have to do
that.

Anyhelp would be appreciated
Thanks.

Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 04:34:19 GMT

Hello everyone!

I just installed TurboLinux 6.0.4 OSE Workstation today, and I noticed
that it uses RPM. Well, I thought that is cool. So, i went to download
an rpm from freshmeat.net and install it. Well, I did a rpm -ihv
<package>, and it gave me this error:

only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of
RPM

Gah! Whats this mean? I tried it on like 5 different packages, and all
said the same thing.

I installed an rpm that came with the distrobution cd, and it installed
successfully.

Does anyone have any idea on what to do to fix this? I used tarballs on
some things (QT, Licq), but sometimes they are a pain in the arse. Any
ideas or fixes would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
