As far as I am aware, no. It's a one-way function by design, and so
brute force would be the only way to crack it. If you need to recover a
lost password:

Boot from alternate media
Mount your root filesystem
Edit /etc/passwd

First off you don't want to install rpms from RH7 unless
you have *ALL* the necessary libraries installed. RH7
uses glibc 2.1.94, RH6.2. uses 2.1.1 or so.

To install rpm 4.x you first have to upgrade to 3.0.5.
Then use this to install 4.x. This is o RH's site.

Dear Linux gurus,

I assumed that my /usr partition would expand automatically when I
recently reinstalled SuSE 6.3. Silly me. Right now I have ~ 2.44 GB of
free space on / and only 254 MB of room on /usr . I have
tried a symbolic link to and from these two mount points, but the OS
does not allow this. Is there a way I can slide over 1 GB to /usr
from / ? I would hate to reinstall, as everything is working fine.
Thank a lot for any response.

Awaiting wisdom,

John

Well, a few years ago, I found some DOS diagnostics for DATs and
used them on mine. Think they came from Seagate and used ASPI.
Your adapter vendor should have shipped ASPI compatable drivers.

Also, could the tape(s) be bad.

How do I create one of them to be Primary?

Actually, I think the dividing line is finer than that:
Win95 OSR2 and above supports encrypted passwords (also NT4 SP3 and up),
so with Win95 in the mix the administrator will need to know which version
of 95 is being run in order to decide how best to set up his Samba
passwords.

Did you install Windows after Linux?

Did you install Linux on a partition and use the boot record on that
partition (rather than using MBR)? If you didn't then I would do it.
The easiest way is to go into lilo.conf and change the boot entry from
someting like /dev/hda to something like /dev/hda3 (whatever the linux
partition is). Then run lilo.

Therefter you need to run Partition Magic and select the Boot
Configurator. It should automatically detect the Linux entry
in /dev/hda3.

Short of a(n unreliable) brute-force dictionary-based crack attempt,
there is no way to get the original password out of the encrypted one
in /etc/shadow

I must admit, I was never very happy with the performance of my linux system
running kde. All the time, I had been using a different boot loader, chos.
For other reasons, I deinstalled it and installed LILO, version 21.6. To my
surprise the system runs noticeable faster, I guess 20-50% ! How can the
boot loader change the system performance ? I am quite happy, but just want

`cat /proc/version' may give you the information that you wish. Why
do you want to upgrade your kernel? If you need a new feature then,
it makes sense. You should get the source and recompile, because you
can enable features that are specific to your machine.

Any canned distribution would cater to the lowest common denominator.
You may only get code that is optimized for a 386 and not have the
best possible DMA controllers, etc. I don't think it is an extremely
easy thing to do though. You should keep a backup of your current
kernel and become familiar with lilo commands. You may have to tell
lilo all kinds of things to get your system running. Having a second
linux machine that you can swap the hard drive to is also helpful.

Bill

I'm assuming this is a fairly standard setup and so you are using bash
as your shell. Also assuming you actually typed "sh Xinstall -check".

I would try putting things back how they were and trying;
./Xinstall.sh -check
or
./Xinstall -check

I'm not an expert so I may be barking up the wrong tree. HTH anway.

Hi,

I had a PPP account, which I configured using the "Dialup Configuration
Tool", the account name was "StarISP". But then I deleted this account.

Now, I'm trying to recreate the account. But the Dialup Configuration
Tool keeps on telling that I already have an account with the name
"StarISP" and asked me to enter a different name for the connection. But
I've deleted this account earlier.

It seems to me that the configuration tools some how remember the
account created in the pass. Is there anyway to make it "forget"? I've
checked the manuals, reference and HOWTOs, but none mentioned about this
behaviour, which I suspect maybe a bug.

TIA.
